Why this must be read:
Because Halloween is coming, and The Addams Family, in all its incarnations, is monstrous, creepy fun.
This is one in a series, following Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc and followed by Your Body Before Me, but those are not necessary for enjoyment of this, my favorite. John is an Addams. He's Different. His body heals, when he allows it; he can see other things; and he's awfully damn tough to kill. He's also trying to pass as normal. He lives with consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, who's not aware of John's hidden talents. In this story, cousin/niece Wednesday comes to visit, with her possibly supernatural pet tarantula, Horatio. It's brilliant. True to both sources, it's a bit gory (even Gorey), alternately dark and light, funny, and touching in its relationships. John's advice to Wednesday on the fragility of those normal and the parameters of their tolerance for the different is amusing and sad. The humor ranges from cartoonish to subtly witty, and the whole story is a marvel of craftsmanship.

"Still twelve?" John asks when he meets Wednesday at the airport. Sherlock had been willing to put up with a house guest and when prodded, had even made some efforts to move the worst of his experiments to his bedroom instead of the kitchen. But he'd drawn the line at coming with John to pick up his niece.
She looks at him levelly. "I'm almost thirteen," she corrects. "In three months."
John feels his eyebrows raise. She'd been twelve as long as he'd known her, with no end in sight. "When did that happen?" he asks lightly, as they wait for her suitcase at the baggage claim. "Is Pugsley turning thirteen too?"
"No," she says shortly, and her gaze drops immediately to the ground. "Just me."

It's a wonderful crossover and I'm impressed with how well she's made it work.

That said, still one of my favourite series in this fandom.
