02:11 am That Seat is taken by Saffron Bailey (PG-13)
Fandom: HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] domarzione
Author Website: The DMZ
Why this must be read:

Small but perfectly formed, this is a speculative post-"Life Everlasting" fic that will have you sobbing into your keyboard. Life Everlasting left us with so many unanswered questions, principally the fate of Tim Bayliss following his confession to Frank Pembleton regarding the murder of Luke Ryland. The presence of an empty chair in God's Squadroom hinted heavily as to what this fate might be. In measured, elegant prose, Saffron Bailey gives voice to the final testament of Tim Bayliss; a meditation on death, birth, the nature of love, the burden of guilt and the possibility of absolution. Quite outstanding.

(P.S. I neglected to introduce myself last week - Doh! I'm showerMat and I'll be your driver this month)

03:55 pm Et In Italia Ego by Sebastian (NC-17)
Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Sebastian's Professionals fiction can be found at the Circuit Archive and The Hatstand.
Why this must be read:

This is my favorite Sebastian story, bar none. It's tender and sexy and bittersweet to the point of heartwrenching, all rolled up in a gorgeous mini-tour of Italy. Bodie and Doyle holiday together, trying to forget their workaday lives - at least temporarily - but they can't quite avoid the spectre of George Cowley and CI5. Sebastian does a wonderful job of building the tension between them, their feelings so real and intense that they pull you in and make you complicit.

06:15 pm Pirate Dreams: Book I and II by Alex Fandra
Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean

Pairing: Jack/Will

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alexfandra

Author Website: http://www.drizzle.com/~fanalex/fanfic.html

Why this must be read: This is just plain fun. There are two novel length connected stories and I think the second one was a successfully completed Nano Novel, so go Alex! The first one is just yummy cliche fic at its best. The second one adds an element of scooby-dooesque mystery. And I realize that comparing something to Scooby-doo may not sound complimentary, but I really love Scooby-doo. There's murders, ghosts, and creepy foggy islands, but sadly no one has a mask pulled off their head and says "I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those pesky kids!" Anyway, special bonus points to the scene in the first book where Jack and Will have to disguise themselves as monks. I laughed so hard, I scared my cats.

Fandom: Starsky & Hutch

Pairing: Starsky/Hutch (slash)

Why this must be read:

The Velveteen Hutch

This is a wonderful character study, and a great introspection on all the things that Hutch could be -- and maybe *was*-- given the possibilities for his background. (Note that I say "possibilities"; character and background canon is a bit of a fluid thing in S&H). This is a soft, elegant piece that packs an emotional punch all the same, and is a must in the consideration of one Kenneth Hutchinson.

Why this must be read

Because, because. It's lovely. It's one of those stories that makes me a bit incoherent because I can't tell exactly what it is I like about about. It's very well written and moving and sad. The writing is understated and quite simple but for all that is very powerful.

09:16 pm Fiction in the Space Between by Scapekid (PG-13)
Fandom: Farscape
Author: Scapekid
Author's website: none known
Author on LJ: no

Why this must be read: This is an intense, complex, and fascinatingly non-linear story, which weaves together Crichton's past, future, and the unbearable present. The characterization is sure, the plot compelling and suspenseful, and Scapekid leaves just enough to our imagination. She also includes one of the few children in a Farscape fic that doesn't make me want to hurl from sweetness.

At two he has not yet heard how his grandfather flew X-15s into the upper atmosphere, or how he shot down fighter planes over Germany in the First World War, and he will hear all these things in time. But this is the pinnacle, being picked up by strong hands in the last of the evening light, this is as good as it gets.

Go on, read it, you know you want to: Fiction in the Space Between by Scapekid.

10:45 pm Even Sugar Peas Run Out of Snap by k (NC-17)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Danny/Casey
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] callmesandy Email:sakeene@yahoo.com
Author Website: lowercase k stories

Why this must be read: Dan and Casey are together, are in love, and it doesn't fix everything. This is a really realistic portrayal of what might happen if Dan and Casey got together, and stayed with Sports Night. Actually, it's a really realistic portrayal of relationships in general.

The next day, at the office, he says, "You don't like Matchbox Twenty?"

"Casey. Matchbox Twenty - uncool. Never trust a band with a number in their name that's spelled out."

"Matchbox Twenty - they're uncool?"

"Yes. And they suck."

"I like the music."

"Well. Seriously, Casey - Matchbox Twenty? Their music is like - it's taking only the radio friendly parts of Jane's Addiction, R.E.M. and U2 and putting 'em in a blender with a heaping helping of bland to smooth out any rough edges. They completely suck."

"Am I allowed to like Third Eye Blind?"

"No. They're the same species of crap. And Creed. Except Creed just puts Pearl Jam in the blender and strains out all the talent. All three - uncool and sucky."

Casey looks pissed. He looks pissed for the rest of the afternoon and I can't believe we're actually going to have an argument about Matchbox Twenty. One more reason to hate that talentless crap band. After the show, we end up at his apartment and he snipes away at how cooler than thou I am for a half hour. By then, I'm pissed, too, because I can't believe he'd actually be mad at me for making fun of some stupid cd he likes, after ten plus years of ridiculing his choices. Tonight he decides it's bad.

Also, the last paragraph is kickass. Sometimes I just go back and reread that paragraph and let it wash over me.

Read it, love it, send feedback.
