Title The Step to the Left Affair (PG-13)
Pairing: Illya and many guest stars
Length: 3,500 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Author's works can be found at Castle Keep

Why this must be read:
Sue Castle (formerly known as Brenda Antrim) is well-known for writing one of the classic Man From U.N.C.L.E. stories: The Plausible Deniability Affair. However, that's not the only Man From U.N.C.L.E. story she's written. There is also this one, which is a cross-over with almost anything you can think of:
Andromeda, Chasing Amy, Dawson's Creek, Dogma, From Eroica with Love, Homicide, The Island, Man from UNCLE, Moulin Rouge, Mummy Returns, Queen of Swords, Rat Patrol, The Watcher, Wiseguy and Wolf Lake. And it's funny.

I thought I had reviewed it before, but I didn't see it on the list, so I'm grabbing the chance.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Beka
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] travelintheways
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: tomorrow is Beka Valentine Day in 'drom fandom (known as Valentine's Day to the rest of the world). this story was written for the celebrations last year, and is a great fun. Beka spends her day trying to figure out who keeps sending her valentines - the twist at the end is sadly sweet.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Beka/Tyr

Why this must be read: this short fic is filled with a spot-on Beka voice, pitch perfect snark and hot Beka/Tyr flirting. what's not to love?

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Harper/Eureka Maru
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] grey_bard
Author Website: http://www.belladonna.org/GreyBard/gbindex.html
Why this must be read:

There are a couple of stories that feature Harper having intimate relations via dataport with either the Eureka Maru or The Andromeda Ascendant (our Boy is a cyberpunk, if you'll recall.) I like this one because it's fun, playful, and disturbingly hot.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Harper/Tyr
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] toscas_kiss
Author Website: http://www.toscaskiss.net/
Why this must be read:

Harper explores possible endearments and nicknames for Tyr, Tyr is disgusted, and the peanut gallery is amused. This fic ranks pretty high on the "cute and funny" meter, and is a must-read for those who like cute, in character humor.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Brendan Lahey, character study
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fandomfrom3
Author Website: http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=fandomfrom3
Why this must be read:

This is a new story for the fandom, and its about Brendan, Harper's cousin, and it takes place in, around and after Bunker Hill. The format of the story is in single sentence "chapters" and is non-linear. The writer has an excellent handle on the constraints of this format and each sentence pulls you deeper into the over all story. Brendan is a freedom fighter who realizes that he's also a terrorist--but he can't stop fighting, any way he can.

3rd-Oct-2006 11:24 am Pouncing on People by Maryavatar (R)

I'm going to be your tour guide/driver through the Andromeda fandom for October. We're a small fandom, and most of us either know or have heard of each other (at least in LJ-space, or those affiliated with [livejournal.com profile] maryavatar's Andromeda Uncovered website and mailing list.) Sadly, the fandom fizzled out toward the end of the third season, with only a few diehards continuing to write and/or rec stories. Hopefully I can do my part to drum up interest in this fandom.

Speaking of Maryavatar, I decided that the first story/series I was going to rec would be her "Pouncing on People."

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Harper/Tyr
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] maryavatar
Author Website: Amused and Abused
Why this must be read:

The most common portrayal of Tyr in fanfic is as a odd cross between Klingon and Vulcan. Tyr is shown as dominant, aggressive, and only interested in procreative sex, even in the slash fics (where it's explained as either "practice" or a "dominance" thing.)

Maryavatar takes a slightly different tack with "Pouncing on People." In the story, (a short series of linked PWP ficlets) Nietszcheans have a genetic predisposition to being attracted to certain useful survival traits such as intelligence, regardless of the sex of the individual they're attracted to--and Harper is a genius.

What results is a game of cat and mouse with Tyr pouncing on Harper, and Harper not minding very much. This story manages to be cute and funny, with a few brief bouts of seriousness, because even a light PWP needs to deal with Harper's backstory, IMO.

Why this must be read: WARNING: This fic is 36 chapters with an epilogue but it is one of the most amazingly written fics I have ever seen. It is WELL worth the time. And it's full of Harper angst, which *always* floats my boat. ;)

31st-Aug-2006 08:36 pm Recreation of the Warrior, by Kit Mason (NC-17)
Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Tyr/Harper; Tyr/others
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] twistedchick
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:  This is my favorite of the epic stories in the fandom. Tyr narrates as his life evolves, as it could have evolved into a full and meaningful role among his people and his shipmates had the series not unraveled. Kit fleshes out the Nietzschean matriarchy and marriage customs and the relationships among the crew, primarily that between Tyr and Harper, that most popular and unlikely couple.

Musical artist: Paul Simon
Pairing: Rhade/Beka; focus on Gaheris Rhade
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jmtorres
Vidder's website: The Fannish Things of JMTorres
Why this vid kicks ass: Andromeda vids are few, more's the pity. Such interesting characters: so much pretty, so many myths, so much canon to subvert...

Rhade, in his several aspects, was called the true superior man of the series by the show's writers. As the super-man he's featured in another of Jul's vids, "Kryptonite." Here, she shows him in the alternate reality/original reality of The Unconquerable Man episode, pondering his choices in exile.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Dylan/Tyr
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] beccaabbott
Author Website: http://becca.slashcity.net/
Why this must be read:  My favorite pairing is one often requested but rarely written.  The increasing unlikability and unpopularity of Dylan is one reason. Another is the challenge of pairing two physically matched, strong, Alpha characters who were, if not enemies, at least competitive and deeply suspicious of each other.

In Omega, Becca Abbott proposes a strategy for Dylan to control his threatening shipmate, one rooted in the politics of Nietzschean culture. Like everything between these two, it's not easy.

5th-Aug-2006 01:32 pm Retreat, by Ana (R)
Hi, I'm Unovis and I'll be your driver this month for Andromeda.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Harper/Tyr
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl
Author Website: Ana's Fiction
Why this must be read: I'm easing in this month with one of my favorite writers. She's a remarkably clean, evocative writer who brings out the grain of her characters with deceptively effortless skill.

Retreat is one of three short stories that form a chain: Push, Retreat, and An Easy Trajectory. It takes place after "Angel Dark, Demon Bright," when the crew is dealing with guilt and survival, allegience and betrayal, fate and free will. The story focuses on Harper and his reactions, with Tyr taking a less central role. Tyr's involvement, however, is both pivotal and poignant, against the background of "Angel"'s events.

30th-Jun-2006 06:37 pm VID REC Andromeda Weapon of Choice
Vidder: Koba TV
Musical artist: Fatboy Slim
Pairing: Tyr/Really Big Guns (also Tyr/Harper, Tyr/Beka, Tyr/Freya, Tyr/Elsbett and Tyr/Yvainne, but mostly just the guns, and knives, and Squarm-dung frizbees)
Vidder on LJ: N/A
Vidder's website: Koba-TV Videos
Why this vid kicks ass: Because it's Tyr and his really big guns. And his muscles. And his really big guns. And his leather. And his really big guns.

It's an old vid, made from S1 and S2 TV rips, so the picture quality isn't the best, but it's still well worth watching, in my opinion.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Tyr/Harper
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl
Author Website: Ana's Fiction
Why this must be read: Written for the 'Wake Up Gay!' challenge, By the Progenitor! is unashamedly silly, and I love it for that. Take one character whose entire race places reproduction above all other things, and turn him gay. Then stir in a handful of flaming clichés and you have something that never fails to make me grin.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA

Author Website: Stories by Unovis
Why this must be read: Well, [livejournal.com profile] unovis_lj shows up on crack_van often enough that you all know what an exceptional writer she is. She's a perfectionist whose stories have that 'hand-crafted by skilled professionals for superior quality and style' feel. She's the only writer I know who not only makes me want to read Dylan/Tyr, but makes me enjoy it so damned much.

In Gravity, set early S1, Dylan is off-balance, both figuratively and literally. Tyr becomes something of an anchor point for him during an anti-gravity failure. The image of Tyr and Dylan strapped to a bed together while the Andromeda hurtles through slipstream is one that says with you.

Title: A Rat Out Of Time
Author: Angyl and Orithain
Pairing: Tyr/Krycek
Author on LJ: ??
Author Website: Infinitum
Why this must be read: The hotness. The scorching oh-god-my-undies-are-burning hotness. I've never watched X-Files, but this still rates as the hottest Andromeda crossover I've read. And trust me, there was some pretty stiff competition. Angyl and Orithain write really great sex; there's an interesting story there too, but I read it for the sex. Tyr and Krychek are quite disgustingly pretty, in an alpha-male way, and rubbing up against each other... the mental movie almost shorted out my brain.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Tyr/Harper, Harper/other
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: Sienna's Slash fiction
Why this must be read: I'm recommending this because it hits my kinks. Big time. It's a pre-Andromeda story. Pre-Maru even, set before Harper met up with Beka and escaped to a better life. Harper's survival on Earth through prostitution is arguably canon, as one of the original writers, Zack Stenz, said this about Harper's past:
A realistic "Harper growing up on Earth" prequel would probably be equal parts City of God, Salaam Bombay, and My Own Private Idaho.

In the Kitchen was written before he said that, but I know a lot of us had been thinking it. Harper is young here, but he's still a survivor, doing what he has to do and making the most of it. Tyr is the Tyr was saw in season one, a mercenary, an assassin, a great cook...

And there's blisteringly hot sex and spanking! Oh yes, it hits my kinks.

10th-Jun-2006 12:08 pm In the Falling Away, by Viridian5 (NC-17)
Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Dylan/Harper
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] viridian5
Author Website: The Green Room
Why this must be read: Time travel is extensively covered in Andromeda canon, but it doesn't crop up much in fanfic. In this story however, Dylan and Harper are thrown back in time to before the Fall. They land on Tarn-Vedra, centre of the Commonwealth and Dylan's homeworld. Viridian makes pre-Fall Tarn-Vedra come alive; she introduces well-rounded original characters and perfectly describes a civilisation complacent in its belief that it is the invincible centre of the universe. I found it fascinating that Harper thrives in this new environment, attending university and making friends (and enemies), while Dylan becomes withdrawn and depressed, unwilling to spend any time in a place where he once belonged.

Fandom: Andromeda
Pairing: Tyr/Harper
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] toscas_kiss
Author's Website: tosca's kiss
Why this must be read: It's a recovering-from-Magog-infestation story. Which is something that was almost completely absent from the show. For six months Harper lived with a death sentence, and trauma like that doesn't just disappear overnight. In Hypothermia Tyr stops Harper from physically freezing to death during a malfunction on the Maru, and at the same time triggers the start of an emotional thaw. I could blather on for pages about why this is my favourite Tyr/Harper story, but the excerpt will be far more eloquent.

Why this must be read: Because it's hilarious if you know Andromeda, and hilarious if you know Shakespeare, and you will laugh up a lung if you know both. It's one of Shakespeare's finest tragedies dressed up as a Shakespearian comedy, written for a sci-fi audience. What's not to like?

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Dylan/G Rhade
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jmtorres
Author Website: The Fannish Things of JMTorres
Why this must be read: other than because of its hotness? both G Rhade and Dylan are perfectly in character - strong, complicated men in a complicated relationship in complicated times. the way the story nestles right against the beginning of the show's pilot, working with instead of against canon, is refreshing and happymaking.

also, there's a hand job of hotness.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Beka/Trance
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gmajor
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: there's a serious dearth of femslash in Andromeda fandom, let alone good femslash, which is just down right silly, as the canon is full of hot chicks doing hot things in hot clothes. also, deep emotional bonds, if you're into gay things like that. (:D)

this here story is one of a handful that try and explore the lost AU that comes before "Ouroboros"... or is it after "Ouroboros?" either way, it looks at the confusion and sense of loss Beka feels as she loses one friend for another she thought she'd lost long ago.

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Tyr/Dylan
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] solitary_summer
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: this quiet story explores the politics and conflicts at play in Tyr and Dylan's relationship and in Tyr himself. it's a glimpse of a sexual relationship between these two men that is as firmly in character and canon as can be.

[livejournal.com profile] solitary_summer begs forgiveness for not being a native English speaker, but their writing style - built with proper word usage and free of any kind of slang - works perfectly for a story that is set completely inside inside the head of a character known for a love of grandiose verbiage.

(their metaish thoughts on the show, some of its pairings and story ideas that never came to be, all of which can be found in [livejournal.com profile] draftbook, are all more than worth reading.)

Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Beka/Rafe, Ignatius/Willow
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle
Author Website: various innovations
Why this must be read: in this Jossverse crossover, Ari shows us a slice of life aboard the Maru while Beka was still a teenager. Ignatius brings Willow home from a seedy little bar on a seedy little drift, while Beka and her brother work together to con him out of some "medical supplies." there's some slight Beka/Rafe incest, but Ari makes it make sense in the way she draws the characters and the world around them.

13th-May-2006 07:57 pm Boy From the County Hell by Maya Tawi (PG-13)
Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Harper, Beka/Bobby
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mayatawi
Author Website: zippos and safety pins
Why this must be read: Harper & Beka first meetings are something of a genre unto themselves in Andromeda fandom, despite (or possibly because of) the show giving us its own canon version of how things went down.

Boy From the County Hell focuses on Harper's side of the story, and on the stark reality of his life on Earth before he meets Beka. Maya Tawi's first person Harper voice is spot on, a bit younger and rougher than the Harper we know on the show, but still as sarcastic and brilliant and lovable as ever. His interactions with Beka ring with the beginnings of something great, and the subtle detail of the decaying world around them is enough to pull even the most distant reader into Harper's world.

Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] jmtorres wrote both of these for a meme that goes through fandom every once in a while, where the point is to explain and describe your own personal reading of a character.

her Rhade description traces the way he changes from the pilot through into the canon AU of "The Unconquerable Man."

her Tyr description captures the ways he reconciles his loyalties to his shipmates with his Nietzschean sensibilities.

12th-May-2006 11:40 am Andromeda: Coda by Robert Hewitt Wolfe (G)
Fandom: ANDROMEDA
Pairing: Trance & Harper
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Official Website
Why this must be read: this story, written in script format, is an example of something that's pretty unique to Andromeda fandom. David Hewitt Wolfe was one of the original writers on the show and was very active in forming the major arcs, until he (and a few other top writers) left at the midpoint of the second season. the show continued on with many of the story lines he had overseen, but either changed them or eventually dropped them completely.

"Coda" is essentially a piece of fanfic Wolfe wrote three years after he left the show, which uses Trance's foretelling ability to subtly comment (and snark) on the places the show ended up and the places it was meant to. it touches on pieces of canon from the early seasons (including the Engine of Creation, about which we already have conflicting canon in the form of an episode and an official novel) to build on what Trance sees as the Perfect Possible Future.

this story is worth reading both as an interesting piece of fic and as a telling piece of meta.
