Tommy/Merton, pre-slash and silliness.

"Are you a genius or not?"

"Am I a genius or not?" Merton huffed, offended. "You wound me, Tommy. Of course I have another option, but I doubt you'll like it any better." Merton sighed and bit lightly at the edge of his thumb. "Werewolves 101, Tommy: what makes you wolf out?"

"The full moon," Tommy said promptly. Merton's rolling hands urged him to continue. "Pain. Fear. Anger. Lu--" Tommy faltered as Merton nodded, "--st." Tommy cleared his throat. "Merton, you're a guy," Tommy protested. "You're a good friend and all, but you aren't really my type." There: that was nice and diplomatic and soothed over a potentially awkward moment.

Or not, because Merton was talking again.

"Oh, please," Merton said, rolling his eyes. "You're easy, Tommy, and I haven't been your friend this long without picking up on a few of your sweet spots."

    "I'm easy?" Tommy gaped.

Option Number Two

Mostly, though, this entry is meant to say good-bye. I’ve greatly enjoyed my time rec’ing Big Wolf on Campus, and talking to fans, new and old. I’m delighted that so many of you were willing to give this fandom a chance, and were kind enough to tell me when my pimping was working.

Fandom: Big Wolf on Campus
Pairing: Merton/Tommy
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wirrrn
Author Website: Axis of Weevil
Why this must be read:

Though I prefer his Night of the Leaping Dead (previously rec’ed), Wirrrn’s second story in the BWoC fandom shares the same roundabout, tangential banter that I so enjoyed in the first.

Tommy gripped Merton's wrist with a hand that looked distinctly hairy (A couple the next seat over immediately stopped their frottage-related activities at this obvious sign of Divine disapproval of masturbation) and planted a huge, wet kiss on Merton's startled, but quickly compliant (and even quicker wide open) lips.

After a while (during which the movie finished, another movie started, and numerous members of the British Royal family gained the throne and abdicated) Tommy finally pulled his mouth off of Merton's.

"Sorry, Merton. That was the only way I could think of to stop you from talking."

The Goth shook his head out of the fugue state he seemed to have fallen into. "-That's okay, Tommy. Lord knows I have a tendency to ramble on. To enunciate, if you will. To wax eloquently over a veritable cornucopia of topics. To give myself over to an excess of verbalisations, to elucidate to an excessive degree..."

The jock arched an eyebrow over a (markedly sulphur) eye. "You're just asking for me to shut you up again, you know."

Merton grinned. "-Really? You caught that? I thought I might have been a tad too subtle."

Fandom: Big Wolf on Campus
Pairing: Merton/Tommy
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Fanfiction.net Profile
Why this must be read:

Mallory parodies BWoC fic, because really, there’s so much there *to* mock. Abused!Merton! Suicidal!Merton! Mary Sues galore! And, of course, an abundance of clichés. Here, Mallory tackles the “top six slash situations”--recognizable to any slash fan, even without any BWoC knowledge.

Mary had known it was a bad idea to come to this school instead of her beautiful, spunky, demon-fighting cousin, Kethelandrexia Moonstar, Queen of the Gypsies, from the beginning.

It didn't make sense--every time Kethelandrexia transferred to a new high school (which was about once every two or three months), she nailed the best-looking guys and their attractive-in-an-unconvential-sort-of-way best friends right, often at the same time. Until one or both of them died in a battle saving the universe. Which they inevitably did.

"It's easy," Kethel had said. "All you have to do is ignore them and put down their biggest interests, then show up at their houses late one night after having known them for a few hours. Then comes the sex."

Well, Mary had tried all she could. But no matter how hard she tried, Tommy Dawkins just didn't show any interest. What was she doing wrong, she wondered. She'd tried to say all the right things and the right times to Tommy, but he never quite got the hint. It seemed like every time she was making headway, he'd have to run off and meet his friend Merton in the janitor's closet, or the abandoned lube factory, or someplace called the "Manhole."

And every time he _wasn't_ running off to meet Merton, he showed up in the craziest places _with_ Merton, all flushed and disheveled and sticky, with some bizarre excuse as to why he was dressed like Avril Lavigne.

It was enough to make Mary want to swear off men forever.

Why this must be read:

Another sweet first-time fic for our boys. I like this one for the momentary sense of awkwardness, the uncertainty, and the fact that it is subtle for fanfic (the attraction isn’t overly obvious, and things evolve slowly over the course of three stories--and still remain open-ended by the end of the third fic).

Merton had never devoted any serious thought to the attractiveness of other guys, but he’d known even before he became friends with the football player that Tommy was probably the best-looking guy in school. He didn’t need to watch the dozens of girls who followed him around like lost sheep to know that the jock’s tanned skin and toned physique probably made him the subject of more than a few hormonal fantasies for several of the student body.

As he’d gotten to know the other boy, however, he’d realised there was more to it than that. The first time Tommy had smiled at him, he’d made a mental note that the guy could easily make it as a male model, but the more smiles Tommy sent his way, the more little sparks of excitement they’d elicited inside Merton. For a while, he’d thought Tommy’s hair could do with a decent cut, but somewhere along the line he’d started to wonder how it would feel curled around his fingers.

He couldn’t recall a specific moment when he’d gone from knowing that other people thought that Tommy was sexy, to finding his best friend sexy himself, but it had happened. He wished too that he could think of a more interesting word to describe it, but the simple fact was that Tommy was sexy. The guy radiated sex, from the casual way he stretched out next to Merton on the bed, to the easy smile he was showing in response to something on the TV, to the way he licked the popcorn butter from his fingers.

Why this must be read:

As much as I love Big Wolf for it’s goofy plots and silly humour, the show created the potential for real, painful issues though it never really addressed them. This story addresses some of the issues that are only brushed upon in canon: Tommy’s popularity, and Merton’s uneasiness with his place in Tommy’s life.

"You think I want to be in a room full of people who hate me?" It ought to sound melancholy, or at least furious, given that no one ever gets it, no matter how obvious it should be. Instead, it sounds flat, like he's been saying it over and over all day. Feels like he has, almost. Hasn't actually said it out loud. Hasn't exactly said it to himself either.

Because sometimes he does. Want to be in a room full of people, that is, even if they do all hate him, because surely anything is better than being alone. Only he ends up choosing 'alone', because it's easier. No one can actually tell him that everyone in the room hates him.

It's a stupid conflict, and one he can never win, because either way, he gets hurt. It's just easier if no can see him hurting.

Tommy sees him, though, and Tommy's too stubborn to let it go.

So, at the end of the series, Merton surprises Tommy by showing up at State to continue their (slashy) adventures (with the added bonus of a shared dorm room). Caroline Crane, bless her, takes this opportunity most kindly provided by TPTB to write a first time story wherein Tommy likes silk a lot, and likes Merton even more.

And then, she spins a series out of it.

Why this must be read:

Caroline Crane has an entire set of unrelated fics where Tommy and Merton get together while watching slashy movies. In this particular fic, The Lost Boys helps lead to something than both Coreys combined.

There was just something about Merton: whether it was his unwavering loyalty, his enthusiasm for just about every weird thing that happened to Tommy, or just the fact that he had an amazing smile and the bluest eyes Tommy had ever seen he couldn't say. All he knew was that he'd spent the past few months wondering what it would be like to kiss his best friend, and if there was a God who looked over werewolves and hormonal teenagers he was going to find out.

Also? The moment right after the first kiss makes me snicker.

Why this must be read:

Seeing as this is my last week rec’ing Big Wolf on Campus, and Caroline Crane is *the* author to read in said fandom, I figured you could all handle a few more mentions of her Merton/Tommy fics.

“Kissing Tommy Dawkins” was almost the first fic I chose to rec this month, as it was the first BWoC fic that I read with didn’t make me cringe. This fic is good, sweet and awkward and just the way I like my boys.

"I know you didn't mean anything, Merton," he said, and if I didn't know better I'd think he sounded a little disappointed. It didn't make any sense that he'd be disappointed that I wasn't deliberately snooping, though, so I pushed the thought aside and focused on trying to figure out what was bothering him. "It's just weird, finding out that somebody else has been poking around in my head."

    "Tommy, it's just me."

    "Not just you. Especially you."

This story takes place after the season three episode Being Tommy Dawkins, but you can figure out what’s going on without having seen the show.

Why this must be read:

This series of fics, begun with Adulation is a rare thing in the BWoC fandom. Rarer even than het, it is *femslash.* Though Becky and Lori never interacted directly in canon, Caroline Crane builds a relationship between them--from cautious attraction, to smut, to happily ever after.

And if you notice the looks that pass between him and your brother you don't say anything, because you're not supposed to notice these things about the boy you're in love with. Just like you're not supposed to notice how beautiful your brother's other best friend is, and if you do notice it's only because you wish you were more like her. After all, she's Tommy's ex-girlfriend, so of course you want to be just like her.

Many BWoC writers are too engrossed by the show’s slashy subtext and innuendo to pay much mind to Lori. This story is a sympathetic look at the character, and treats Lori as more than the kick-ass girl sidekick. There are a few awkward phrases and typos, but the story in a nice look at Lori, and her feelings for Merton.

Why this must be read:

I’m not especially comfortable promoting my own projects, but seeing as two of the very rare Merton/Lori-centric fics on the internet are mine. . .

After the events of N’Sipid (evil alien boybands, crossdressing, the usual), Merton and Lori bond over nail polish. Decidedly silly, but I had a lot of fun with the dialogue:

"How does it feel?" Lori asked.

Merton blinked in surprise and Lori wondered how long they had been sitting in silence as her thoughts roamed. "What? The nails?" Merton asked. "Weird, but," he brought his hands up and curled them into claws before his face, "strangely empowering." He set a snarl into place and rrrRRow-ed deep in his throat. "Bet I could even take TnT out with these babies."

"I wouldn't suggest it," Lori said firmly.

Merton sighed mournfully. "I suppose not. I'll just have to rely on you to defend my person." Merton lifted his eyebrows in what Lori had come to realize was his meaningful-(but-not-really-serious) expression. Merton rounded his eyes earnestly. "You will defend my person, won't you Lori?”

Future-fics usually aren’t my thing, but this story takes the Merton and Lori from canon, and lets them grow up without distorting who they are. There is a nice sense of friendship between Merton and Lori, and of possibility. Bittersweet and hopeful all at once, this is one of the only good Merton/Lori fics I’ve been able to find thus far.

Why this must be read:

So far, I’ve given you smutty fics, funny fics, and sweet ones. This story tackles the potential darkness of the BWoC-verse: what if Tommy hadn’t been able to resist turning “evil” as all other werewolves do? What if Merton wasn’t quite so resigned to being the school’s favourite punching bag?

Tommy didn't know why, but he had recently started thinking about the other boy. More than he ever had since the kid had started at his school.

He thought about how it had felt to hold that pale throat, to push that slim body against the wall. That had been fun. Merton might not look like it, but there was something interesting below those loose shirts he wore.

And he smelt really, really good.

Definitely a different look at the guys and the beginnings of their relationship.

Why this must be read:

“Scents” is another BWoC cliché fic, this time of the hurt/comfort variety. Merton is sick, and Tommy takes care of him. Revelations follow in a story that manages to be sweet, despite the ever-present phlegm.

The Goth settled back into the couch, realizing only then that
Tommy's arm was still around him. Okay, sure Tommy put an
arm around him in school all the time, but that was in public
and all in good fun, and that...lasted a lot less time.

"Uh, Tommy?" Merton said, not really wanting to lose the
warmth of his friend's embrace, but feeling a little self-
conscious. "Your arm's still around me."

Tommy squirmed a little uncomfortably but didn't change
position. "Yeah," he said, scratching the back of his head with
his other hand. "I'm just, uh, feeling a little protective, okay?"

Why this must be read:

I find BWoC a fun fandom because there is room to play with so many fannish clichés, and I willingly admit to a fondness for a well-written cliché fic. In this story, Merton and Tommy fall under a spell--say it with me, folks--a *love spell!* This story has a nice blend of angst and humour, and I appreciate that this situation isn’t easy for the guys.

Merton, Tommy, and Lori also *feel* like teenagers, which is cool: they are flustered, confused and embarrassed. I’ve been reading about teenage characters since I first entered fandom, and have no problems with having them put into sexual situations. However, the BWoC characters act younger than those from shows like Buffy or Roswell, and I like that Bekquai recognizes their youth and inexperience.

A warning before you begin, though: this fic is a work-in-progress. There are only two more chapters, but I don’t know when they’ll be posted.

Why this must be read:

*How* to explain this one?

This story almost feels like canon--if canon had been on late-night TV rather than created as a children’s show. Meaning that there is a ridiculous monster plot, much banter, rambling asides, and pop culture references--all involving much more adult versions of Tommy and Merton:

-Merton! There's a Lovecraftian God in the dorm bathroom!"

"I know this looks bad Tommy, but we ca- You knew it was an Elder God? I had to cross-reference with my pocket edition of 'Dictionaire L'Infernale..."

-The Goth points to a torn flap of black denim clinging half-heartedly to the side of his jeans.

"... Which, between you and me, has no business being called a 'pocket edition'. But this is great, Tommy! You've developed a working knowledge of Lovecraft! All those hours of... research in the Lair paid off; you've read your first Occult book!"

The werewolf frowns. "- Occult book? I thought it was some kinda Gay Sex Guide."

"S... Sex manual?" Merton's eyes pop out in independent directions and he turns a colour that, whilst interesting, is not really associated with those outside of the reptile community.

This story is, in short, *fun.*

Why this must be read:

This is, in a word, *gorgeous.* “Epithalamion,” is also (aside from Caroline Crane’s works) one of the only truly well-written NC17 fics in the BWoC fandom. I love this fic for the mood it conveys:

So while Merton seemed completely unaware of Tommy's growing frustration, it was becoming more and more difficult for Tommy to remain oblivious to his appeal. The scent of his desire was growing stronger and starting to mix with other things like trust and hopelessness and something so quiet and sweet Tommy was afraid to name it.

The wolf was getting harder to control too. Whenever it caught the spicy, somehow sad scent drifting off of Merton, it was all Tommy could to hold himself in check. To not throw back his head and empty everything he was into a cloud-shattering howl.

Depending on your stance on one of the clichés in werewolf fanfiction, there’s an element in this story that may bother you. Still, the writing is good enough that I’d urge you to set aside any distaste for said cliché and enjoy the ride.

Why this must be read:

If you hang around BWoC fandom for any amount of time, you’re sure to run into Caroline Crane’s stories. If you’re lucky, she’ll be the *first* BWoC author you encounter. While I don’t always agree with her characterization (my version of the boys are dorkier, whereas hers are several steps removed from the silliness that is canon), Caroline Crane is always the first name that comes to mind when thinking of Big Wolf on Campus fanfiction.

Caroline Crane has a *lot* of BWoC fics, and I’ve been agonizing over which one to rec ever since I signed up to pimp BWoC. I settled on “Fate and Other Four-Letter Words,” because it has many of the elements of her other stories that I most enjoy: namely, first times, and confused boys stumbling towards something *more.* Caroline Crane is, without a doubt, one of my favourite writers when it comes to the ‘dorky boys finding love’ type of fanfic.

Big Wolf on Campus

The Overview

Big Wolf on Campus (BWoC) is a half-hour “children’s” show that ran for three seasons (and is currently in syndication in Canada on YTV).

Big Wolf on Campus is a goofy show that has enough wisdom not to take itself seriously at all. The show is filled with pop culture references, and most episodes are a play upon a movie, television show or book villain and/or premise (Frankenstein, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Terminator, The Phantom of the Opera, boy bands and so on).

A running joke involves Merton comparing the gang’s current predicament to the movie on which that episode pokes fun (“this reminds me of. . .”). When Tommy proceeds to ask for details, Merton moves into a meta discussion of the film in question. This is followed by Tommy’s exasperated cry of: “in the movie, Merton!”

Big Wolf on Campus: a goofy show, sure, but it’s also a whole lot of fun. I hope this overview will encourage people to give the recs for this fandom a chance.
