Since I'll be away for some time, I'm posting my sixth and last Maurice rec now. Thanks to everyone who commented and expressed their encouragement --  I hope you've enjoyed the stories! (If you are interested in reading more fics in this fandom, I suggest checking out [livejournal.com profile] mr_edna_may, as well as the Dreamwidth community Never be Parted.)

Why this must be read: Longer than your average Maurice fanfic and more satisfying than most, Somewhere to Begin offers a vision of Maurice and Alec's life some years after the novel's ending. The deft use of original characters and the vivid writing make this story a pleasure to read.

23rd-Jul-2009 05:38 pm A Mirror Distorted by Shirasade (PG)
Fandom: Maurice
Pairing: Maurice/Alec
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shirasade
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] _readingroom
Why this must be read: Have you ever wanted to read Maurice/Alec from Clive's POV? Yeah, thought so. Short, subtle and plausible, A Mirror Distorted explores Clive's reactions as he happens to spot a familiar face during his visit to a hospital camp for wounded soldiers during WWI. The fic is movie-based, but other than a brief mention of Maurice's blond hair, it fits perfectly with the novel.

Why this must be read: Written in a flowing style which rings very true for the character, this short snippet does a wonderful job of exploring Alec's feelings after his second night with Maurice.

Fandom: Maurice
Pairing: Maurice/Clive
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] haydenthorne
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read: Insightful and well-characterised, this fic deals with Maurice's feelings after Clive's marriage, as well as the latter's denial. I especially like how the ending alleviates the overall sadness, showing us that there are better things waiting for Maurice.

12th-Jul-2009 08:20 pm Alfriston Gardens by marauderthesn (PG)
Fandom: Maurice
Pairing: Maurice/Alec
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] marauderthesn
Author Website: Her fics are here.
Why this must be read: Maurice's relationship with his family is an aspect which is (IMO) sadly unexplored in fanfic. Taking place some hours after the final meeting in the boathouse, Alfriston Gardens offers not only some lovely Maurice/Alec interactions, but also a poignant glimpse of Maurice's feelings as he is about to leave his home, never to see his family again.

Hi, I'm [personal profile] miss_morland, and I'll be your literary fandom reccer this month. To be more specific, I'll be reccing fics based on E.M. Forster's novel Maurice, the fandom of which sadly is not very large, despite its status as a GLBT classic. Here's to hoping that will change some day!

Fandom: Maurice
Pairing: Clive/Anne, allusions to Clive/Maurice
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] athousandwinds
Author Website: LJ memories
Why this must be read: Set sometime after the novel's ending, this short fic from Clive's perspective offers not only an impressive amount of insight into a character it can be hard to understand, let alone sympathise with; it also captures Forster's style beautifully, subtly showing us Clive's delusions as well as his underlying unhappiness.
