Pairing: Gen
Length: Long
Author on LJ: Unknown

Why this must be read:

D.L. Witherspoon was pretty much the first author I ever read when I discovered fan fiction, and I couldn't have had a better introduction. DL's writing is lively, witty, and baroque. Her Jim is grandly heroic and compassionate, but nevertheless human and vulnerable. Blair and Simon are his stalwart companions.

Quite a few of DL's many stories have already been rec'd. If I could I would rec all the rest, but I selected her Gates of Hell series, which include some of her darker stories.

In 'Bayou' a psychic connection with an abused child takes Jim, Blair, and Simon to New Orleans where they discover powers beyond their expectations. The story is haunting and heart-breaking.

The following stories in the series delve even deeper into the supernatural, and include crossovers with Millennium, Highlander, Friday the Thirteenth, Dante's Divine Comedy (sort of), and Touched by an Angel. Jim encounters demons and darkness, becomes a warrior for the archangel Michael, and confronts Lucifer himself.

Pairing: none
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: LRHB Fiction Site
Why this must be read:

This is hurt/comfort/smarm done right. It has a real plot. The situation is horrific, but believable. The victimized men are vulnerable, but not weak. It doesn't have a pat happy ending where good triumphs completely. There are costs.

While primarily a Sentinel story 'No Center Line' crosses over with Nash Bridges and, to a lesser extent, Millennium, though knowledge of them is not required to enjoy the story.

Blair Sandburg and Evan Cortez of San Francisco are among ten police officers kidnapped by a sadistic businessman who produces live Internet porn and snuff videos. When Sandburg is almost miraculously recovered, Nash observes the power of the unembarrassed care and unconditional support given their traumatized friend by Jim and Simon. The surviving officers are still in danger and only Blair's courage and resourcefulness can rescue them. Even if Evan is recovered Nash wonders if he will be able to give his friend the kind of support he will need, the kind of caring he has observed between Jim, Simon, and Blair.

No Center Line is the sixteenth installment in a long story arc, though each one can be read as a stand alone. If you want to start at the beginning, go here.

LRH Balzer writes with power and sensitivity, building to a breath-taking climax. Don't miss it.

Why this must be read

Because it's too weird not to read. Because it's one of those fics that is all about the snarky snarky humor. Because it's one that takes all the fanon and canon character traits to the extreme.

Pairing: Maria POV (some michael/maria)

Why this must be read:
i should have posted this on crossover day... it's a whole multitude of worlds mixed up here - Roswell, BtVS, Millenium - and while it's nice to have an understanding of the three universes, you really don't miss out on anything if you don't.

" You know everything has to get put through the Maria filter." - Alex Whitman

ever since maria was younger, she saw visions - dark, gritty visions that she had to train herself to acknowledge, but not approach. shimi delves into maria's psyche, giving her this lush and chilling existance - wondering what and who she is, even after she gets some answers from Frank Black.

in "geometry of trees," maria recounts her past few days to Samiel, a guardian of sorts that Frank Black brought upon her - a guardian that she both doesn't want and doesn't want to lose. maria travels to sunnydale with her mom and finds an unexpected resource in tara - but returns feeling more separate from her friends than ever.

if you haven't read any of shimi's work - go, go, go now and do it. she's amazing. these stories are also connected to "body shots" and "choke" and take you into this place that you want so much to understand and ends up twisting and turning you until you find yourself deeply entrenched in the maria filter.
