Title: Sailor Hellblazer!, by David Tai and Rod M.
Pairing: gen
Author on LJ: ?
Author Website: ?
Why this must be read: This is fanfic from a distinctly different set of fandom; before LJ, before ff.n, when it wasn't unusual to post fic with one's real name. It's interesting to compare the different conventions used, and--

Okay, it's Hellblazer crossed with Sailor Moon. It's ancient. It's weird. It's extremely long.

And if you haven't read it, have you really read Hellblazer fic? :)

Why this must be read: Good Omens and Hellblazer don't exactly have what could be called similar mythology - which is why this crossover is extra impressive. The callback to Chantinelle and Tali really made this fic for me, but I imagine it's just as good coming from a purely Good Omens standpoint, too.

Why this must be read: It's pure Hellblazer with a touch of Sandman; I could almost see the illustrations and the layout as I was reading - and the ending has just the right tone.

Why this must be read: It's short, it's not-quite-sweet, it's post-Kit fic. There's not much fic that deals with this particular part of John's life - where he's as down as he's ever been and not ready to come up yet. He's self-pitying and depressed and addicted and still entirely, oddly self-aware.

Title: Finding Hell by Mayatawi
Pairing: John Constantine/Dean Winchester
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mayatawi
Author Website: http://panthea.populli.net/
Why this must be read: This fic isn't plot with porn, or porn with plot - it's both at the same time, weighed perfectly so that neither overpowers the other and nothing feels tacked on. At 25,000 words, the plot is well-realized and fitted to both characters and their originating canons, the crossover feels natural and unforced, and the porn -

Well.

The porn is really hot.

Why this must be read: Here's another amazing Yuletide fic ('tis the season, after all) - and another amazing fic that takes a look at John and Chas through the lens of a good, well-managed plot.

This time around we have John's point of view on a problem Chas brings to him, which changes the feel of the fic and the portrayal of their friendship rather drastically, but very much in a way that's true to their characters. John is spot on here - cynical but genuine, friendship mixed with mockery - and it really carries the fic.

A little weirder, a little lighter, a little more magical, this is out of a different era of Hellblazer than the fics I've recced before, but it's every bit as enjoyable.

Why this must be read: In my overview I mentioned that the annual Yuletide small fandom fic exchange has a Hellblazer presence - this fic is an example of just how amazing it can be.

Chas is definitely one of my favorite characters in the series, and he really shines here, but not in a way that requires him to be anything more than he is; the spotlight is on him in a very realistic way, showing him doing exactly what he would do.

The plot is wonderful, too: a great premise that fits right in with the themes of the comic, awesome twists, a brilliant use of Chekhov's gun. It's very well paced and the voices and characterization are spot on.

Read it, you won't regret it.

Have a taste... )

Why this must be read: Last time I brought you a fic that could have been canon. This time, a fic that should be canon... okay, so that might be the fangirl in me talking.

Squeeing about the pairing aside, this is one of those rare NC-17 fics that's realistic, true to the canon, and really makes you feel for all the characters involved. There's a whole lot more here than just porn.

Hi, everyone. I'm voksen and I'll be driving the bright and shiny new Hellblazer van. It's rather a small fandom, fanfic-wise, but there's some really excellent fic nevertheless. I hope you enjoy!

Fandom: HELLBLAZER
Pairing: none (gen)
Length: 14k (StC) / 25k (sequel)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] deathpixie
Author Website: There's an archive at comicfic.net.
Why this must be read:

Suffer the Children is well written with excellent character voice, but where it really shines is in its compelling, well-thought-out plot and the way it's woven seamlessly into canon events: it reads like the comic made fiction, like it could literally have been a canon story arc (and one of the better ones, too).

It's also one of the longer Hellblazer fanfics out there - still, if you finish it and are left wanting more (like I was), there is happily a 'semi-sequel' which is every bit as good for all the same reasons.

Read the fic: Suffer the Children and its follow-up, Death and the Art of Pyramid Selling.

1st-Nov-2009 06:12 am Hellblazer: Fandom Overview
Hellblazer is an ongoing DC/Vertigo comic that generally revolves around the life of John Constantine, a snarky, cynical British mage of somewhat questionable background and morals. It began in 1988, though the character had his beginnings in Swamp Thing in 1986. Unlike many comics, it has been running in real time ever since, meaning that John is now 56 years old.

As a Vertigo comic, Hellblazer is somewhat set apart from the DCU, and official crossovers between them tend to be discouraged - though John has on rare occasion met DCU characters such as Batman, Zatanna Zatara, The Phantom Stranger, and others, as well as having made appearances in books set in the DCU proper.

In this overview, I'm going to try to do my best to avoid spoiling any of the relatively more recent plot.
