Title: Not From Around Here, But Here Just The Same by gingasaurPairing: Cameron Mitchell and Helen Magnus Author on LJ: gingasaurAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read: As Cameron Mitchell waits in the thirties to right the timeline, he meets a woman who is the spitting image of his dead friend. This is a fill-in for Stargate: Continuum, but all you really need to know is that the timeline went wrong, that Cam has gone back in time to fix it, and that Helen Magnus is near-immortal and hunts things you thought only existed in cryptozoology books. (And is fabulous. You need to know that) A story which not so much lampshades the fact that Helen Magnus and Sam Carter look alike as floodlights it and sings karaoke about it, this is the tale of the nine-year bittersweet friendship between Helen and Cam in the 1930s. It's simply and elegantly written, well-characterised, and if I'd have liked a little more thirties atmosphere, that's just because I am greedy. Not From Around Here, But Here Just the Same

Vidder: ellymelly Musical artist: Robin Williams Pairing: none Vidder on LJ: ellymellyVidder's website: ellymelly @ youtubeWhy this vid kicks ass: So who remember Fern Gully? ellymelly takes the awesome rap that Robin Williams sings in that movie and makes it work for Nikola. Because guys, come on, Nikola is that batty and his logic is sometimes that erratic lol. Excellent crack of the highest quality!!! (Also highly recommended by this vidder: Brand New Day, in which Nikola channels Dr. Horrible.) Batty

Vidder: kuwdora Musical artist: Kesha Pairing: none Vidder on LJ: kuwdoraVidder's website: Vid Tag, PixieliciousWhy this vid kicks ass: This fanvid is a miracle - kuwdora found a way to make Kesha's music far more meaningful and interesting than it actually is. Whoever would have though that a song about transvestites at a drag show would work so well with the Revelations/End of Nights story arc?? It's a fantastic vid that retells the events of those four episodes from start to finish, and although you know how it ends, that ending packs quite a punch. There's a place downtown where the freaks all come around will take on a whole new meaning for you. I highly recommend you also check out the rest of kuwdora's Seven Days of Sanctuary. Vidder: looking4tarzan Musical artist: The Echoing Green Pairing: none Vidder on LJ: looking4tarzanVidder's website: crazyjaneficWhy this vid kicks ass: This is the kind of vid I'd show to a friend to explain to them why Sanctuary is so awesome. It also functions as an excellent overview of Season 1 and the webisodes. looking4tarzan captures the tone of the show perfectly through the clips and choice of song - it's really a breathtaking vid. The Sanctuary itself is also a character in this vid, which thrills me to no end. This song works insanely well with Sanctuary, summing up the entire show in the chorus: You define the line between human and divine, In this empty place, intrinsic grace so necessary, See the skies divide when hope and fear collide, From this cemetery offer me this sanctuary Sanctuus

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/James/John/Nigel/Nikola combined in multiple ways Length: 5,976 words Author on LJ: bessemerprocessAuthor Website: bessmerprocess @ AO3Why this must be read: Another Yuletide fic. This fic is as EPIC as The Five are. It consists of snippets from the lives of The Five from 1885 all the way to 2010. The Five are such an incestuous little bunch, and I love how the writer pairs them together in all these different ways. The writer totally gets each and every one of The Five and their relationships with one another, and uses the most intriguing quotes to head each snippet. The writing is superb and the voices of the characters spot on. Within five minutes of reading this fic I knew it was going down as a classic in my book. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/John Length: ~ 4,000 words Author on LJ: nocleversigAuthor Website: NoCleverSig @ ff.net, NoCleverSig @ Sanctuaryfiction.netWhy this must be read: Helen tries to cope after Ashley's funeral with a bottle of Scotch when John arrives and tries to pour her into bed. An excellent angsty look at the aftermath of the funeral and a poignant look at Helen and John's relationship, past and present. Dreamt the Dark Angel

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 2,321 words Author on LJ: sadiefloodAuthor Website: SadieFlood @ AO3Why this must be read: Five members of the Sanctuary team, plus Nikola Tesla, spend one eventful holiday in four very different ways. Another great Yuletide fic. This fic reads like an episode of the show - this is so the way Christmas would go for them. All the characters are spot on perfect, the plot is great, and the snark flows as easily as the libations. Four Christmases

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 5,493 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown Why this must be read: A visit to the Reform Club leads to the ending of a chapter in the history of The Five. Before Nigel finally appeared on screen in For King and Country, we knew very little about his character. For that reason, various depictions of Nigel appear in fanfic. This story features one of them, and although it doesn't match the Nigel they showed us, it's an interesting piece anyway. If Nigel isn't your cup of tea, I'd read this fic anyway for the excellent conversation between John and James about the Ripper. The writer misspells Magnus and Griffin's names along with several other words, which would usually be unforgivable, but in this case, the fic is a good enough read that I can overlook it. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/Nikola friendship, Helen/Will friendship Length: 1,860 words Author on LJ: rowan_dAuthor Website: Rowan Darkstar @ ff.net, Fic TagWhy this must be read: I'm mainly reccing this fic because Helen calls Nikola "Nikky" and it does NOT make me want to puke. I'd say it's a miracle, but it's more like Rowan is just that good of a writer. A wonderful post ep for Sleepers where Helen and Nikola are actually able to open up to each other. Raw yet incredibly sweet and touching. She only drank two glasses of wine. Two glasses is her limit. One glass makes her warmer. Two relaxes the cramps in the backs of her calves. Three she grows talkative. Four, and the walls fall away. Helen Magnus can't afford more than two glasses of wine. Echoes

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none (minor Helen/John) Length: 773 words Author on LJ: artaxastraAuthor Website: artaxastra @ AO3, Tag ListWhy this must be read: Ok, I swear this is my last rec by artaxastra, but her stuff is just so good (and you should read all of her Sanctuary fics)! I couldn't leave this fic out. Like I said before, artaxastra keeps on coming up with these incredibly deep and insightful fics that shed so much light on the characters. This fic is an analysis of John and the Ripper by Will, and it's absolutely brilliant and makes complete sense. Of course Watson couldn't solve the case. I always thought that was because the idea of John being the killer was so ludicrous that he never considered it, but this explains it much more fully. Profile

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 1467 words Author on LJ: skidmoAuthor Website: skidmo_ficWhy this must be read: This fic was written for Yuletide 2010, and since the authors won't be revealed until Jan 1, I have no additional information to give as of yet. This was a bit discouraging, but since I don't know when I'll be able to rec Sanctuary again, I thought I should rec this fic even without knowing who the wonderful author is. Author added. In this fic, Helen meets five famous historical figures, which follows perfectly in the footsteps of the show which loves to lob out all the awesome people Helen has met over the years. These meetings range from poignant and moving to loltastic and a tad scandalous. Five Times Helen Magnus Met Her Hero

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/Bigfoot friendship Length: 1,500 words Author on LJ: a_loquitaAuthor Website: a.loquita @ ff.net, Fanfic MasterlistWhy this must be read: A wonderful look at Helen and the Big Guy's relationship as well as Big Guy's love of reading and some nice backstory. a.loquita has the Big Guy down so perfectly with his taste in trashy books, and a very humorous scene about the Big Guy needing reading glasses. She thought about putting her foot down when he discovered dime-store romance novels with bodice-ripping pictures on the front. No respectable library of hers was going to contain such books.
James laughed and her and told her to let the Big Guy be. If that was his worst flaw, she should be so lucky. Big Guy only grunted, gave her a satisfied and smug look (or as close to such a thing he could manage) and turned ahead to page 78 where he knew the action got really hot.The Library

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 1,300 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: The Blue Raven @ ff.netWhy this must be read: I admit to watching too much Primeval, because the second I read this title I *needed* to read it lol (so when are they going to use the Wilhelm Scream on Sanctuary?) Set in Season 1, Will "New Guy" Zimmerman gets hazed and it's hilarious, I would have loved to see this on the show. And for those of you who miss Steve, he makes a welcome appearance in this fic. That Calls For a Wilhelm Scream

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 1,766 words Author on LJ: jedibuttercupAuthor Website: jedibuttercup.com, Fic IndexWhy this must be read: The reason I'm reccing this fic is because it puts forth a rather clever idea that I haven't seen in any other fics and it totally works for me. I won't spoil it for you, other than to tell you that it's about a relationship between one of The Five and Will. This fic has totally changed the way I view the show! That Which Remains

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/John Length: 2,605 words Author on LJ: artaxastraAuthor Website: artaxastra @ AO3, Tag ListWhy this must be read: artaxastra's specialty is writing incredible fics that provide such insights into characters that after I finish reading, suddenly the show makes more sense. It's really brilliant. This fic is a post-ep for Pavor Nocturnus, featuring a wonderful conversation between Helen and John as they tiptoe around the topic of Ashley. Such a loaded conversation, each word a potential mine. artaxastra really gets Helen, and the last sentence is a wonderful revelation for Helen that works so well for her character. "It's my house," she said. "I do as I please. This is not 1880." She settled back, her back against the sofa pillows, his arm still behind her, her legs across his. "It's only that I've been more circumspect lately. I didn't want to set a poor example."
For Ashley. The words hung unsaid in the air between them.
"Heaven forbid," he said, and the amusement in his eyes encompassed every ploy and stratagem they'd employed to avoid chaperonage, every entirely unsuitable liberty. Only he hadn't smiled like that then. He hadn't carried all of this in his bright, untroubled eyes. Second Summer

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/OMC, Helen/James UST Length: 3,260 words Author on LJ: rowan_dAuthor Website: Rowan Darkstar @ ff.net, Fic TagWhy this must be read: Helen's had many friends and lovers throughout the years and has had to suffer through much inevitable loss. And although she's gone through it time after time, I can imagine it being just as painful each time, whether due to death or departure. In this fic, Rowan does a lovely job depicting the aftermath of a breakup. I love the relationship Rowan created for Helen and the reason it broke up. I also love James in this fic, his unspoken love for Helen, and the fact that he bought a convertible just because Helen liked it. A lovely and insightful drive through the night for James and Helen. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/John/Nikola Length: 2,596 words Author on LJ: penknifeAuthor Website: penknife @ AO3Why this must be read: This is my second rec this month by penknife. I'm going to try to stop there, but I do encourage you to read all of penknife's Sanctuary fanfic because every. single. one. of penknife's stories is amazing. This fic in particular is another one of my favorites because not only is it deliciously hot with overtones of Victorian repression, but it is also able to accommodate both Helen/Nikola and Helen/John without alienating the other ship, something which is rather hard to find. John lets his arm rest more firmly against the small of her back. "I believe we shocked the children," he says.
Helen smiles a little mischievously. "With this? This wouldn't even have been shocking in the Victorian era."
He could say that she knows perfectly well what's shocking about her willingness to allow him in arm's reach, but it would shatter the fragile moment of contentment, and he's not sure to what purpose. "Let me see," he says instead, putting his arm around her waist and his other hand on her knee. "Is this more shocking?"Indecent

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/John Length: 5,300 words Author on LJ: samjack_shipperAuthor Website: Rose Stetson @ ff.netWhy this must be read: This fic takes place during and after For King and Country, and does a great job filling up those missing pieces of the episode, such as what happened while John and Helen watched the sunset together. It takes rapidly approaching death to finally get John and Helen to actually talk to each other, and I love what Rose has them say. "I'm sure that by now, you've decided that it was a mistake to wrap yourself in my arms in Cambodia?"
Her eyes grew hard as she resented his frustratingly playful tone.
"Helen, you're not well." He said, finally. "I know I have many sins to atone for, and that redemption will not come easily, but perhaps you only came with me because you know you have nothing else to lose?"Brutal Honesty

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/Will friendship Length: 2,898 words Author on LJ: egalitarianmuseAuthor Website: Regency @ ff.net, The Eyes Have ItWhy this must be read: An excellent look at Helen, Will and their relationship as of For King and Country. I especially love how Regency discusses Helen's history of lying and her thoughts on Will as her successor. Will finds himself believing the madman — well, one of the madmen. There's an abundance of them in residence today. Touched

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Henry/Bigfoot friendship Length: 1,509 words Author on LJ: velvet_midnightAuthor Website: milesbetween_usWhy this must be read: Because this is the awesomely geeky tale of what happened when Henry and Big Guy went to Comic-Con during Sleepers. I can totally picture Henry in full geek out mode rambling as fast as he can. And AHHHH FURRIES LOL. “Did I tell you about this hot blonde I saw who looked suspiciously like Magnus? It was kind of weird.”You Say Geek Like It’s a Bad Thing

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/John, Helen/Nikola Length: 2,700 words Author on LJ: sheikahAuthor Website: Fic TagWhy this must be read: This fic doesn't have a plot - rather it's a collection of snapshots from Helen's life. Each piece is amazing in its own right, poignant as hell and contains a wonderful insight into Helen and/or her relationships with John, Nikola, James and Ashley. sheikah's writing style is absolutely fantastic, especially so in the Ashley passage. The last lines are killer, had me tearing up a bit. Definitely one of my top five favorite fics in the fandom. “I remind you of what we had before,” Nikola murmured in a rare moment of sincerity. “We’re all scattered to the four corners of the earth, Helen, and you running into me again brings up the good times. Remember those nights in John’s flat, arguing about the latest theory of the day? I’ve never found anyone who can go toe to toe with me like you.”Set Fire to This Life

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Kate/Will Length: 4,772 words Author on LJ: kgalewayAuthor Website: Fic TagWhy this must be read: I have no clue where the writers of Sanctuary came up with the Kate/Will in the episode Pavor Nocturnus. Thank god for kgaleway, because this fic makes it work. A great fic about Kate that really gives you some good insights into her character. I love how kgaleway chronicles the end of world through Kate's tattoos, and the way kgaleway ends the fic. An excellent piece of writing that I've incorporated into my personal canon for this episode. Dance, Dance, Cry, Cry//This is How We Become Unsung Heroes

Fandom: SANCTUARY/MAMMA MIA! Pairing: Various, including Ashley/Will, Helen/John, Helen/James, Helen/Nikola, James/John, etc Length: 2,112 words Author on LJ: artaxastraAuthor Website: artaxastra @ AO3, Tag ListWhy this must be read: If you're looking for a fic that will make you spurt milk out of your nose, then this is definitely worth the read. This is one of the funniest fics I have ever read. You really have to have seen Mamma Mia! to understand half these jokes, but if you haven't I recommend you read it anyway because after this fic, you will never be able to watch several rather serious scenes or hear certain lines in Sanctuary without cracking up (bad artaxastra, bad!). Artaxastra is able to fit every character from Sanctuary into the plot perfectly, utilizing their unique character traits to make the story even funnier. Crack at its finest! Biggie sings Chiquitita as Helen explains that she doesn't know which of the three is Ashley's father, as the Five were all so close! "It was just one big experiment in pushing the boundaries of the physical world," she says.Mamma Mia: The Sanctuary Version

Fandom: SANCTUARY/WAREHOUSE 13 Pairing: Helen/Nikola/HG Wells Length: 2,631 words Author on LJ: geonncannonAuthor Website: Geonn @ Sanctuaryfiction.net, Fic TagWhy this must be read: Remember when HG Wells says she met Nikola Tesla at the 1893 World Fair? Geonn takes that line and runs with it, giving us a wonderfully well written and smoking hot fic about what happens when Nikola introduces his new acquaintance to Helen. Oh, Nikola and his little plans, grrr. I'm not into Warehouse 13, but I absolutely adore HG and wow, she fits into Helen's past perfectly. I'd love to see her character on Sanctuary, but since that's not going to happen, I'll settle for the occasional fic. I also love how Geonn uses historical details such as the Ferris Wheel at the World Fair and the real Nikola's celibacy. Ascension at Dusk

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: James/John, minor Helen/John Length: 4,200 words Author on LJ: ariaficAuthor Website: Aria @ AO3Why this must be read: A very intense fic covering all the way from the very start of James and John's relationship to the very end. Aria takes all that slashy subtext that was dripping off of James and John during that epic scene in Revelations Part 2 ("It was you!") and makes excellent use of it. An utterly poignant and sometimes painful journey through past and present. Aria does an amazing job with James' POV, and the writing style and dialogue is fantastic. "Why change the rules?" he asks Druitt miserably, over brandies at the club. "It's playing hell with my deductions. I thought he was too damned arrogant to get so clever. Do you think he did it simply to throw me off the scent?" He knows it's terribly narcissistic, but he can't help feeling this like the personal affront it is.
But Druitt merely shakes his head, looking thoughtful. "Perhaps," he says, "the old boy's losing his taste for the sport." Dissect the Supposition

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 1,593 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: IsmAsm @ ff.netWhy this must be read: A cute fic in which Nikola finds out about Twilight, which has gotta be really awful for him considering his opinion of Bram Stoker. Nikola could honestly say that he had very little idea of the view of vampires in the mind of the public past about 1897.
So really, he had to ask someone.Cultural Joke
