Why this must be read:

I want to thank everyone who indulged me as I recced Emergency! this month. It allowed me to rediscover my love of my first fandom, as well as sucker a few new people into it.

My last rec is a hysterical look at what would happen if the guys suddenly figured out their lives were being manipuated by screenwriters and fan ficcers:

Really you can't go wrong with any of Linda's stories, but this is the one that has me rolling in the aisles every time.

31st-Dec-2007 09:49 am The Nuisance Stories by Lisa O'Brien (PG-13)
Fandom: EMERGENCY!
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://lovegage.topcities.com/fanfiction.html (this is where her other stuff is...)
Why this must be read:

Time for another lost E! classic. Lisa O'Brien took upon herself the monumental task of recording the POV's of every member of Station 51's A-shift during the episode "Nuisance". This episode is important for three reasons, a) John Gage suffers a nearly career-ending injury when hit by a car, b) it's directed by Randolph Mantooth, and c) it's the introduction of Craig Brice.

It's a series of six stories and it's now out of print, but thanks to the magic of the Internet, it's available to you anyway.

Fandom: EMERGENCY!
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [community profile] iamrighthere
Author Website: http://lovegage.topcities.com/fanfiction.html

Why this must be read:

Nice h/c, nice action/adventure... but really the reason I like this story is because of the little slice-of-life touches it offers regarding the fire service and EMS.

Lunch at a fire station is a convoluted affair. Menus from local sandwich shops are passed around. Person A might have a hankering for Chinese; Person B may desire a cold-cut sub. After the cuisine is chosen, the individual entrees must be decided, followed by side orders, drinks and dessert. All in all, it can take an hour or longer before the medics begin their journey to pick up the food. If the medics are on a run, however, the engine will go.

John Gage chose to drop the subject of his equipment, at least temporarily. He saw that Roy was losing patience with him, so he opined on other topics as the squad rolled its way toward Mona’s Italian Delicatessen.

Fandom: EMERGENCY!
Pairing: various gen
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://kmg365.com

Why this must be read:

After I recced the Sedentary slash series earlier today, it brought to mind another three-story series (gen this time) that I would be remiss in forgetting.

In Heatwave, Walls and All Things, author Todd F. takes hurt/comfort many steps beyond the basics, digging deeply into the psychologies of the men of Station 51 as they interact with each other, the fire service and the world around them. They live, they love, they get hurt, and they heal... often becoming better people in the process.

Todd varies POV, style, dialogue, and use of canon details to make all three stories distinct, yet part of a wonderful whole.  Keep an eye out for how he develops secondary characters as well -- his Brice/Stoker fanon is fascinating.

Fandom: EMERGENCY!
Pairing: Johnny Gage/Dr. Kel Brackett

Why this must be read:

While the list of bad E! slash is much, much, much longer than the list of good, the Sedentary series definitely belongs to the second list.

It's a pairing that doesn't immediately come to mind: Johnny Gage and Kelly Bracket. Yet James somehow makes it work with a minimum of cringe-worthness:

Why this must be read:

When you read my brilliant E! fandom overview (you did read it, right?) you'll remember that I mentioned an odd piece of fanon: the death of Chet Kelly.

Many stories address it. But dee_ayy's "Requeim" is one of the few that actually does it justice.

Fandom: EMERGENCY!
Pairing:
Author on LJ: unknown

Why this must be read:

This is definitely the fandom for spine-tingling, edge-of-your seat adventure. In this classic, Johnny and the guys participate in a wilderness training exercise, and find themselves fighting to survive instead.

Rated PG for some grusome descriptions and flashbacks, plus a heart-rending story of pain and survival.

Fandom: EMERGENCY!
Pairing: Johnny/OC
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://www.fanfiction-library.com/
Why this must be read:

Kenda writes great action, adventure and h/c. This story is considered a classic in that genre. It has many sequals and spin-offs, but this is the original (and best, IMHO).

FYI, Kenda's writing is controversial among some in the fandom, and she uses some disturbing themes and imagery.  If you are put off by the idea of attacks on children, this is not the story for you.

17th-Dec-2007 10:07 am Long Term Care by Rose Po and Mary Morris (PG-13)

Why this must be read:

Paramedic Craig Brice turned up in three episodes of Emergency! An annoying, by-the-book perfectionist, he spawned legions of fic that characterized him as... well... an annoying, by-the-book perfectionist.

But in "Long Term Care", Brice will make you cry and laugh and rage against the injustice of the world. Fate has brought him and John Gage together in medicine's version of hell, and Roy can't handle it:

Gage and Brice will die.  The question that the authors pose so heartbreakingly well is, will Roy ever come to terms with the fact that that aren't dead yet?

Why this must be read:

Because it's cute. And hot.

Johnny Gage is in the hospital, you see. And his recovery is hampered by all these nurses who want to sleep with him, you see.

And so sex ensues.

Hey, that's why it's called Crack Van!

http://kmg365.com
Why this must be read:

A lot of authors, in an effort to hurt poor Johnny, write him with child abuse in his past. Or worse yet, with a stereotypical Indian father who drinks too much and regularly beats his half-breed son.

Not Todd F., who takes a worn-out premise and breaths new life into it with breathtaking details of life on the reservation, parents who aren't cartoon cut-outs of Native Americans, and real, tear-jerking emotions.

Why this must be read:

It's total crack!fic... it's a death!fic... it's everything I hate in fic.

Yet in the capable hands of Rose Po, this story will draw in the most jaded reader.  Rose has created an entire canon in her stories, mostly centering around John Gage's Indian heritage (which the series addressed a few times).  I promise you will want to read everything else she has ever done, once you read Star Quilt:

Why this must be read:

Sandra McDonald has moved on to actual "legit" writing now, but back in the day, she was quite the fan fic writer.  "Hank's Men" is a prime example of her style: a litle angst, a little H/C, a little humor -- and a lot of accurate characterization and tiny slice-of-life details that elevate a story above the "hurt Johnny ad nauseum" genre:

Fandom: EMERGENCY!
Pairing: Johnny/OC, Stoker/OC
Author on LJ: [profile] pea_gee
Author Website: She had one, but Freeservers ate it.
Why this must be read:

The problem with slash in the Emergency! fandom is that it has almost no canon support. No thoughtful glances, few loving touches, no double-entendre. But what it does have is a lot of secondary characters. And when you have secondary characters, they can be anything you want them to be.

Mike Stoker is one of those characters. And in this story, he's gay, and Johnny's confused. But not in the way you might think:

Why this must be read:

I thought long and hard on how to introduce you to the best E! fic. And Hellfire kept popping up in my mind. It's Johnny-rich, it includes a lot from the other guys, it's exciting, angsty, filled with humor and H/C... you name it, it's got it. And it doesn't hurt that it's magnificently well-written.

In this excerpt, Johnny is upset after finding out that a firefighter who harassed him and hurt shiftmate Mike Stoker is getting away with a slap on the wrist:

Hi I'm Audrey (no, not that one). Welcome to my Emergency! fandom rundown. There's a lot to take in here, but believe me, it's worth it. This fandom holds a special place in my heart, since it was my first.

First, a special thank you to Emergencyfans.com for a lot of this information and some of the pictures.  Anything you need to know about this show, you can find there.

Now with that out of the way...
