15th-Jan-2014 10:20 pm ART REC: Veronai élet, by Atov (not rated)
Fandoms: RÓMEÓ ÉS JÚLIA / LA VIE PARISIENNE - OFFENBACH
Pairing/Characters: Mercutio/Métella, Raoul de Gardefeu/Tybalt, Bobinet with implied Bobinet/Gardefeu/Tybalt/Mercutio/Métella
Length: 3 drawings
Artist on Tumblr: apfelstrudelz
Artist Website: most art is under the atovision tag (note: sometimes gory) | other art on DeviantArt at ruberoidz, although nothing Rómeó és Júlia as of this post
Why this must be seen:

Alas, there is no crossover fic for this fandom yet, but there is some glorious crossover art, and perhaps someday it may inspire fic! Atov's art all has an energy that I love, with interesting compositions, beautiful coloring, and distinctly drawn characters.

"Veronai élet" ("Veronese Life") is a series of gorgeous drawings depicting the results of a somewhat cracky crossover where Mercutio and Tybalt somehow find themselves in late 19th century Paris, entangled with the wacky lives of the dandies and courtesans of Offenbach's comic operetta La Vie parisienne. Instead of everyone dying, Métella finds Mercutio helpful for more than one purpose, Gardefeu flirts shamelessly with this weird angry guy who looks remarkably like his friend and rival Bobinet, and everything ends in champagne and probably orgies.

15th-Jan-2014 06:06 pm ART REC: Obi-Wan / Satine Korejanai! by TiffanyEtch-a-Sketch (G)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi / Duchess Satine of Mandalore
Length: One shot, inspired by this fanart
Artist on LJ: Unknown
Artist Website: dA and tumblr
Why this must be seen:

As a last rec, this piece's arched frame sets the stage for a formal, courtly rendition of the relationship that Star Wars: The Clone Wars developed as a canon romance for Obi-Wan Kenobi: his love interest is of the nobility, she is a pacifist to as strong a degree as he is Jedi, and she occasionally comes off as a diva. The course of their love did not begin smoothly, run smoothly, or end smoothly. The background and medieval vibe made me think that the work could be rendered in stained glass, befitting the detail on the costumes and the tender pose of the couple.

So long, [livejournal.com profile] crack_van! To set the historical placement, on this day in 1759, the British Museum opened; in 2001, Wikipedia went online; and in 1935, a favorite author, Robert Silverberg, was born, who, by his own count for four years beginning in 1956, wrote "a million words a year [...] From 1956 to 1959, Silverberg routinely averaged 5 published stories a month, and had over 80 stories published in 1958 alone." (From Wikipedia.) So let's get cracking on those WIPs, folks! I had a great time here and thank the fantastic mods, who did a bang-up job for ten years; this comm shall be an excellent museum, wiki, and trove of thousands of words. 15th-Jan-2014 03:13 pm ART REC: Arch Nemesis by inklou & Dr. Spencer Reid by E-a-s-y (PG or FRT)
Fandom: CRIMINAL MINDS
Characters/Pairing: Gen - George Foyet, Ian Doyle, Tobias Hanckel, Frank Breitkopf, Spencer Reid
Rating: PG or FRT for both
Artist Website: inklou's profile on deviantart,
E-a-s-y's profile on deviantart

Why this must be seen:
There are two art recs here for different reasons. Most CM fan art makes you want to scratch your eyeballs out - it's a sad fact - so I don't have a lot of patience for scrolling through thousands of hand drawn chibis and the BAU team members illustrated as cats or something. Life's too short. However, when I came across inklou's Arch Nemesis, I had to stop and stare. The killers on CM are either GREAT or psychopath-of-the-week, but rarely are they held up to us in such a beautiful way with their malice intact. inklou's style isn't photo realistic so there's a lot of artistic license in the likenesses, but the warmth of the lighting and palette, plus the four-paned layout, and the rotated POVs all make for an impressive piece of 'bad guy' fan art. It would almost be heroic if they weren't splattered in blood and grinning like, well, serial killers.

Arch Nemesis by inklou

The second art rec is Dr. Spencer Reid by E-a-s-y. Character portraits are a dime a dozen in the fan art world, so you have to do something a little different to stand out from the pack. E-a-s-y goes for caricature here highlighting the aspects of the character (nerdy glasses, grandfather sweater vest, crazy placement of his revolver) so that she suggests Reid rather than accurately drawing him. The thing I love about this piece is the loose, exaggerated line work - it's beautiful and wispy, almost architectural. Also, she manages to capture Reid's long lines and large eyes without making us think that we are staring into a funhouse mirror. This one is a right-click-and-save-to-your-desktop if you are a Reid fan.

Why this must be seen:

A problem with a prolific artist is choosing which piece to rec, and whittling it down to this one took some thought. What struck me was the bright, desert-looking color scheme with its fierce shadows, and the eager look on little Luke's face as he reaches instinctively for the brightest Force presence around, and Owen ... well, Owen wants to protect his little one. That doesn't make Obi-Wan's heart rest any easier, though it must soothe his mind. Tagged both OT and PT because it is intertrilogy. What would a tag be for the upcoming Rebels series, I wonder? IT?

Why this must be read:

This is a gorgeously lyrical and complex exploration of both Tybalt and Mercutio's backstories, highlighting both their similarities and the fundamental differences that make them hate each other. 27th-Dec-2013 12:41 pm Fanmix: “Save The Receptionist” by suchaprince
I don't know of any rec-worthy fanvids for "The Office," but gosh durn it if this isn't the best fanmix I've ever heard.

Why this mix kicks ass: Not a fanvid, but I think “Save the Receptionist” is worth the exception. I’ve been listening to this fanmix pretty regularly for years, even though it’s been a while since I had any actual activity in the fandom. When I wrote my own Jim/Pam fic, this was pretty much the soundtrack I had throughout the entire process. That’s how fantastic it is.

Notes: spoilers for “The Traveler” (ep. 18), “Faceless Old Woman” (ep. 26), and “A Beautiful Dream” (ep. 34)
Why this must be read seen:

This beautiful and adorable piece of fanart (which makes a great companion piece to my previous rec, “On the things you love,” by pearwaldorf) inspired a comment from arbeekeypok:

Wait a second! Will have to reblog the pic again this because a realization just popped. Each of the pictures fit the quota of the four Greek terms of love: Agape, Phillia, Storge and Eros.
  • Agape (Spiritual) is OWJ and the Angels. A spiritual, unconditional and selfless love. And knowing that the Angels may as well be in a religious context, it’s hella obvious [...]

  • Phillia (Friendship)- Dana and the Man in the Tan jacket. It’s your staple friendship-type. The fact that Dana and the Man In the Tan jacket are getting along well [...] is pretty noticeable in this category.

  • Storge (Affection) is pretty much Megan [Wallaby], her family [...] A type of love that is within the family. It’s more or less an natural affection. Like loving a person as if she’s your own daughter.

  • Eros (Intimacy) is obviously Cecil and Carlos. If you know the entire Cecilos subplot by now, it’s pretty much that: A relationship that revolves around passion, intimacy, and the appreciation of beauty. But I can actually see all four types into play with these two.

Don’t mind this. This is just exploding in my head and it may not be accurate, but hi.

To which japhers replied, “OMG GURL YOU JUST EXPLAINED EVERYTHING THAT WAS GOING THROUGH MY MIND WHICH I COULDNT PUT INTO WORDS WHILE MAKING THIS THANK YOU.”

Notes: poetry and fanart
Why this must be read:

Fandom, alas, can be divisive: het shippers versus slashers, competing OTPs, oldschool fans versus newbies and/or reboot fans, and in some sad cases fandom versus creators. This work is the antithesis of that, a marvelous example of fans sharing their love of a canon by riffing on it, and each other’s work. I first encountered “Love Letter from a Scientist” through damatris’s adaptation of some lines from the first stanza of mccoyquialisms’s free verse:

I am not a poet.
I am a scientist.
I can measure the exact frequency
of your voice when you speak my name,
but I cannot explain how it resonates
with such perfect clarity down my spine.

It was with great pleasure that I later found the complete version, as illustrated by nimsley and arbeekeypok, on my Tumblr feed.

Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: badfic.net; on Tumblr; works on AO3
Warnings: “Tentacles, Plot What Plot/Porn Without Plot, Fluff, Cecil is Inhuman.” Also, first-time fic, third eye, non-human genitalia
Notes: Set after “First Date” (ep. 27), no spoilers
Why this must be read:

Although the author admits this fic was inspired by some cute fanart on Tumblr, and categorizes it as fluff and PWP, I’d argue that there is more depth to the story than those labels would suggest because of how Carlos reacts at a critical juncture:

Carlos is about to say, Are you aware you have tentacles? It seems like a reasonable question.

Or would have, to the Carlos of one year ago.

It occurs to Carlos, in that moment, there are certain things Cecil has never, ever asked him. Things like, “When did you come to America?” and “Where did you learn to speak English?” Carlos has been asked these questions a lot, over the course of his life, and has a whole plethora of snarky answers prepared to give in response.

He’s never had to give one to Cecil.

Cecil asks Carlos about science, and about coffee, and occasionally whatever weirdness is plaguing them this month. Sometimes they talk about the other things, too—family and school and childhood and so on—but the context is different. It’s a conversation, not a demand. Not even a demand phrased as well-intentioned curiosity, or a self-conscious declaration of progressiveness and “comfort”.

...

Cecil has tentacles. This is a fact. Carlos really, really wants to have sex. This is also a fact. They can have, Carlos thinks, a big long, awkward conversation about tentacles, during which they will decidedly not be having sex.

Or they can just have sex, tentacles and all.

Carlos choses option B.

Why this must be read:

After a solo expedition to the Whispering Forest ends badly, Carlos realizes that although he managed to escape, he didn’t get out unscathed.

“Carlos,” says the Forest from the voice recorder. “We love what you’ve done with your hair.”

He moves fast enough to surprise himself, grabbing the device and throwing it across the room with a startled, choking yell. The recorder bounces off of the far wall by the window and lands on a table covered in paperwork.

Carlos exhales, stunned at his reaction. And then he hears his own voice speak and he knows that the recorder still works and will continue to play. He knows he cannot stand to hear the Forest’s voice right now and he propels himself out of his chair to retrieve it.

“You are a really good scientist, Carlos. Hello,” the Forest says. Carlos, in the dim lighting, stumbles over one of the wheely chairs and is grateful for his shoes. He snatches up the recorder and punches it open, silencing it. He’s breathing quickly. His mouth is sandpaper.

Carlos gently puts the recording tool down and finds his hand trembling. He’s not sure if this is from rage or fear. He brings his hands to clasp the openings of his lab coat. He is not a good scientist. He is supposed to be impartial. Analytical. Emotionally removed.

In the kitchen, Carlos pours himself more water from the tap and drinks quickly. He carries his cup back to his laptop. He will take something for sleep and decide in the morning if he wants to follow through with the report.

He is starting to shut down his computer when he sees the screen for the first time. The word document is full of: “I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone I’m alone…”

This was one of the hardest Night Vale fics for me to read, and one of the most rewarding. Dangersocks does a gut-churningly good job of depicting Carlos’s alienation, terror, and mounting despair as he feels himself succumbing to an irrational (or perhaps all too rational) compulsion. Luckily, while his loneliness is real his sense of isolation proves false, and even when he’s most desperate he can muster a flash of humor — “I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THERMALS AND AIR PARCELS SO HELP ME GOD THE TEMPERATURE OF THE DEW POINT WILL ALWAYS BE SIXTY FAHRENHEIT...”

Sometimes, bravery means holding on until rescue arrives ... and then letting down your guard so you can be helped.

Notes: Set during “Subway” (ep. 29)
Why this must be read:

I first read this story at nightvalefic.tumblr.com, which has since disappeared; I am extremely glad that it made it onto the Archive of Our Own.

When Coruscating Green, the unlikely heroine, is caught up in the events of “Subway,” she sets off in search of sanctuary and enlightenment, only to find that her actions may also be serving a higher purpose.

She looks up into eyes upon eyes, magnified and multiplied by her own faceted vision. The figure is dark and light and silent and singing. It smells like joy and terror. She starts to scuttle away, to hide herself from its burning regard, but it extrudes an appendage (arm/leg/wing) and scoops her up.

No.

But I...What am I to do?

It laughs, or perhaps it weeps. It thrums beneath her desperate claws.

You Are The Message, it conveys. You Will Be Delivered.

Like canon, this fic puts bizarre characters in a deranged scenario and then punches you right in the feels. I was crying happy tears at the end of this one, no lie.

Why this must be seen:

There is just something so compelling about a drawing based on a well-known canon moment. While we might be very familiar with the scene as the camera had captured it, a talented artist gives us something more. They can focus in on specific details, evoking mood and emotion by what they choose to emphasize or de-emphasize. They make us see their vision. This stunning work does exactly that: In the famous alleyway scene, Anachron captures Hutch's pain and vulnerability and Starsky's intense concern and distress. Starsky touches Hutch, their eyes meet, and you feel the strength of their connection being called upon to pull them both through. Gorgeous.

Why this must be seen:

I am ever in awe of artists who can create visual magic with nothing more than paper and pencil, and [livejournal.com profile] magic_moni certainly fits in that category. Well, I suppose I should be accurate: she uses charcoal and pastels, too ;) "Saving Hand," done in charcoal and chalk on brown paper, is a gorgeous rendering of a moment from "Shootout," where a fiercely protective Hutch watches over an injured Starsky. Intense and emotionally charged, it showcases Moni's ability to capture, not just the likenesses, but also the personalities of these men—she draws Starsky and Hutch as we see them with our eyes and in our hearts.

Moni also occasionally posts 'unfinished stages' of her drawings, giving us some insight into her creative process. The one for "Saving Hand" doesn't have any commentary, but it's still very interesting to see the progression of an artWIP. But don't take my word for it—go take a look-see for yourself :)

Warnings: The author warns for PTSD, flashbacks, slight BDSM tones, and discussion of rape.

Author’s Summary: Tony is going to woo Steve. No, really, he has a whole plan and everything. It's just, things keep going wrong. If he's not getting thrown into the pool and having flashbacks, then some bad guy is fighting some other hero all through their date. But something has to give eventually, right?

Why this must be read: There are a variety of things I liked about this story, but I think the main thing is Websurffer’s deft ability to mix humor, angst, romance and hot, hot sex, all in one highly entertaining story.

It certainly helps that the writing is full of attention-grabbing lines, like the very first one: It's not until he's impaled on a road sign that Tony begins to really appreciate Manhattan's rush hour.

And later in the story, this line: Tony is aware that whining at the person he desperately wants to have sex with is an almost sure fire way to never actually have sex with them.

I'm reccing the hilarious cartoon by [livejournal.com profile] dangwhyme because this is probably my absolute favorite piece of fanart for anything Marvel comics or film related. My initial reaction to it went like this: So adorable. I love Wolverine ("Uh...I'm kinda stuck here") and the Hulk just hanging on ("Smash dragon!....Why dragon not smashed?"), poor Spidey just carried along for the ride ("Maybe I can grab the corner of that building if we just get close enough..."), Thor and Storm looking like they wish they could fly a little faster("Halt, thou dragon...oh crap oh crap oh crap fly away NOW!").

I think I may need to make this my computer background.

For the record, I did indeed make this picture my desktop background for a while.

Why this must be read: Because sometimes when your show is getting angsty and insisting on playing mind-games you need to sit back and look at something really, really pretty. A set of panels of Reese sitting in the hospital waiting room beautifully saturated. Mostly makes me want to touch my monitor in an inappropriate fashion, but I'm okay with that.

Why this must be read: Because the Machine sees everything... especially your texts from last night. TextfromtheMachines tumblr is fantastic in general, with moments of pure brilliance, marrying the texts and the imagery. You can pretty much pic any entry and you will be rewarded.
