Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Jensen/Cougar
Length: 9047
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] storm_petrel
Author's Website: AO3

Why this must be read:
Storm Petrel is an amazing author. She weaves together incredibly well-done action scenes with snarky, snappy dialogue and hot-as-hell sex, and all of her stories work so well that I can't recommend her enough.

And I finish off my month of Losers with the story that is pretty much my absolute favourite story in the fandom. And possibly ever, because I can't stop reading it. It's sharp, witty, sexy, romantic, action-filled and involves a cat.

But not just any cat. It involves Jensen, who might be human most of the month, but has the unfortunate habit of turning into a big black housecat during the full moon. It's about how he copes, about how the team finds out and about how he learns how to turn it into an advantage. And about how he doesn't have to be a cat to get Cougar's hands on him.

I love this story. I seriously love this story. And I hope you love it too.

Excerpt:
So maybe Cat is useful, sometimes, but it’s stupid and uncontrollable, because for every useful, life-saving tipoff, there’s a thousand mornings, afternoons and nights stuck in a truck, in a cargo plane, in a command post in some godforsaken desert, tundra or jungle where sudden, random sensory inputs suddenly hit him like a punch in the gut: the abrupt, overwhelming awareness that no one’s showered in the last week, that Clay’s ringworm has flared up and his feet itch like fuck, that Roque’s carrying so much tension it practically hums off his skin, and Pooch is radiating longing so strong it tastes like blood in Jensen’s mouth and it just beats against him in waves until it suddenly shuts off and he can unclench his jaw.

So yeah, it’s basically the worst superpower ever.

The First Eight Don't Count

I also hope you liked this month-long trip through my favourite fandom, and hope it introduced you to the awesomeness therein.

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Clay/Roque
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] entwinedangels
Author's Website: Master Fiction List

Why this must be read:
It's a story, it's fanart, it's a ridiculous combination of both, where Jensen decides to tell the epic story of Clay and Roque, and Cougar and Pooch keep on interrupting.

It looks like the long and detailed notes you used to pass back and forth between you and your friends while sitting in class, but a hell of a lot more hilarious (unless you were writing slash with your friends during class). Entwinedangels uses two pens and a pencil, three different types of handwriting, and comedy stick figure sketches to get each personality across. And despite all the odds, it works.

It's short, hilarious and so in character that you can just see the three of them, stuck in a room with nothing to do, scribbling the total true love of Clay and Roque.

Excerpt:
So like
"Oh Clay you're so hot! I want you" Roque moves towards him in a manly manner. Clay reaches out a hand, tracing Roque's jaw. He pulls him close and holds kisses?
gives him a soulful gaze.
Oh yeah, because they're really going to gaze soulfully.

29th-Dec-2010 11:44 pm Caveat Emptor, or How Clay stopped ordering things on the internet, by Kelly Girl, R
Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Clay/Jensen, after a fashion
Length: 3709
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kelly_girl

Why this must be read:
Clay needs tech support in his unit. There are tech robots you can buy. Clay clicks the "buy" button on the Jensen 6000, Tech Edition, and ends up with...the Jensen 6000, Triple X Edition.

Yes, Clay has purchased a sexbot. And the comedy hijinx ensue.

But what I love about this story is that it doesn't immediately fall into the clichés of your typical sex-robot story. There isn't any sex. Hell, there's barely kissing, and that's not about sex, that's about getting even. It's not a story about a sexbot - it's a story about being a team, no matter how weird the circumstances are.

And it works so ridiculously well on that level. Jensen is a robot, but he's also Jensen, Clay is always Clay, and if Jensen occasionally slips up and offers to blow Clay, well, that's just what happens.

Excerpt:
The next two days were busy as they prepared for the mission. Clay watched the team integrate Jensen into the group. When Clay had first had his brilliant idea he thought he’d just turn the tech off and on when they needed it. After their initial meeting and the download, he never even considered it.

Plus, he had the sneaking suspicion that Jensen would strenuously object if he tried. For a robot designed to obey his orders he sometimes seemed to interpret them as suggestions or advice. He also talked and talked about any and everything and was a little geeky. Okay, a lot geeky. Clay now knew more about Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars and something called ‘Jossverse,’ than he’d ever needed to know.

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Jensen/Jolene/Pooch, Jensen/Cougar
Length: 8,109
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] snarkcasm
Author's Website: Fanfiction.net account

Why this must be read:
The obligatory high school AU, but not what you would expect. In this story, everyone's over 18, and the only actual student is Cougar. Jensen, Pooch and Roque are teachers, Jolene's the guidance counsellor, Clay's the principal, and Aisha is one of the smoothest educational consultants you've ever seen. It's a bit flawed towards the end, and the love between Jensen and Cougar is unrequited, but the Jensen/Jolene/Pooch threesome more than makes up for it, because it's a delight. I love that this story takes the high school AU and doesn't bog it down in the clichéd dramarama of teenage hormones, instead focusing on the fabulous dramarama of adult hormones.

It's a little gem of a story.

Excerpt:
There's something about Carlos Alvarez that creeps him out—the kid's way too intense. And, from where he's standing, Alvarez isn't doing anything; his screen is totally blank. Both girls on either side of him lean into his workspace and try to chat him up. Alvarez just smiles crookedly and one of them softly squeals, blushes, and returns to her computer. The other one is aggressive and leans into him.

Jensen wants to be the cool, slightly eccentric, teacher, so he doesn't outright embarrass Alvarez. He just politely and professionally writes him an email about staying behind after class and knows that Alvarez got the message loud and clear when dark eyes meet his again. Jensen tries not to squirm in his seat.

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: girl!Jensen/Cougar
Length: 9323
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] greatunironic

Why this must be read:
Tight, snappy, funny, wacky and beyond delightful, Jacobina Jensen is trying to figure out how to cope with her love for Cougar while also being no longer the only girl on the team. Becoming BFFs with Aisha might freak everyone out, but there's shopping to be had, and drives to hack into, and Nazi gold to be drunk. And if Cougar finally sees past the boy-sized cargo pants and borrowed flannel shirts, then it's all good.

And the epilogue is hilarious.

Excerpt:
They’re completely different, the two of them, stuck in a shitty two floor, four bedroom in Shitty Pasadena, the shithole. They’re two-fifths of an elite and misguided mission to destroy some dude called Max, but she’s a hot ass and Jensen an awkward white chick. One of them probably has knives in her hair and the other one forgets she owns a gun. Aisha probably never had to walk through a desert in drag before.

But, fuck, she’s the only close female contact that she has that isn’t nine or post-baby hormonal crazy. It like she’s in Y: The Last Man and she’s Yorick and Aisha’s her Ampersand and it’s all the women who died, not the men. Cougar, of course, is 355. It is so unbelievably sad, she reflects.

26th-Dec-2010 10:13 pm Normality is Such an Over-rated Word, by Katja (PG)

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Jensen/Cougar, Pooch/Jolene, with hints of Roque/Clay
Length: 3466
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merry_gentry
Author's Website: Fanfiction Master List

Why this must be read:
Written in response to the prompt "Clay wondered if his life would be any easier if his unit had all been human. He figures, probably not.", this is a fantastic series which blends the paranormal deftly into canon with all the right touches. Clay can make people do what he wants. Roque is a hellfiend - literally. Pooch innately knows how to fix anything. Jensen can wind his way through the most complicated systems without touching a keyboard. And Cougar? Cougar can turn into a cougar.

It's subtle and in-character and it's incredibly well-done. The second story is a series of origin vignettes, which all hit my narrative kinks so hard, and the third is ridiculously adorable. To the point of inducing cavities.

Excerpt:
People don’t like it when other people can turn into huge vicious cats at will. It makes them wonder about the safety of certain arteries in their necks and just what those sharp teeth and big, clawed paws could do to them.

And so Cougar got all the shit jobs. The suicide runs. And he survived again and again and again and he stopped talking when he didn’t have to – although who did he have to talk to, when his own team-mates barely said more than three words at a time to him? He kept his head down and his eyes covered by the shadow of his hat brim and he did what he was told.

And then Cougar got transferred to Lieutenant Colonel Franklin Clay’s team.

It’s a little difficult to feel like the weird one when there’s a tech-ghost and a hell-fiend on the same team as you.

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: girl!Jensen/Cougar
Length: 1095
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] snowdarkred
Author's Website: Snowdarkred on Fanfiction.net

Why this must be read:
Losers fandom loves the idea of always-a-girl!Jensen, giving us all the issues of being a woman in the military while also giving us someone we can identify with just a little more. The ability to identify with her must be why there's more girl!Jensen than girl!anybody else (in fact, just doing a count based on what I've seen in the fandom, we have 8 girl!Jensens, 3 girl!Cougars, 1 girl!Roque and 1 girl!Pooch).

This story is the start of a delightful series, built of wonderful little vignettes that get inside the team, how they feel, how they are, and how the relationship between Jocelyn Jensen and Cougar develops. It's not an epic romance, it's not explosions and high drama, but it is utterly brilliant.

Excerpt:
They gave her to the Losers because they had nothing else to do with her. She talked too much, and she knew more than her superior officers, and she didn't know when not to let those two cross. She embarrassed them in front of the men, and no matter how many 'lessons' they tried to pound into her, she never slowed down, never stopped, never stayed in what they saw as her place. She was too skilled to simply get rid of, and she was too stubborn to quit.

Nobody was as stubborn as a Jensen woman. They were born with ice in their veins.

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Gen
Length: 2843
Author on LJ: [personal profile] found_feather

Why this must be read:
This is the start of a rather varied and epic series, with a stunning long plotty gen epic in the middle and some delightful little vignettes of romance.

But this is something totally different. What we have here is an utterly heartbreaking story of what happens at home, with Jensen's niece and sister dealing with the loss of Jensen, with the world breaking around them.

It's sharp, it's emotional and it's a wonderful start to an amazing series.

Excerpt:

Mr Velazquez tapped her on the shoulder, really lightly; Beth jumped and turned around. He looked worried; he'd been her teacher last year, and she liked him. He was really tall, so sometimes he crouched down when he talked to you, and this was one of them; he asked, "Beth? Is something wrong?"

Beth opened her mouth to say no. Or maybe yes. Or maybe I need my Mom, the news says my uncle's dead.

Instead what comes out is a noise and she just bursts into tears.

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Cougar/Jensen
Length: 2110

Why this must be read:
This is the start of the rather impressive "Belonging" series - long, epic and utterly fucked up. It brings in a level of harshness that is often missed in this fandom - where it's not light banter and flashy heists, it's tragedy and violence and the wreckage of their lives.

This is not a nice series. This is not a nice romance. There are plenty of things to warn you about. But it is amazingly well done, and well worth reading.

Excerpt:

As far as Jensen was concerned, Cougar was the coolest thing since the Echo Bot – and Cougar had no fucking clue what that was. He didn’t seem phased by the fact that when Cougar wasn’t ignoring him completely, he was glaring.

Cougar hated him, and Jensen hadn’t got a fucking clue.

Length: 2700

Author's Website: Masterlist

Why this must be read:
This story is torrid, thrilling and delightful, with a ridiculously hot threesome, Jensen in a tight and fantastic dress uniform, and a filthy blowjob in an alley that turns into unbelievably hot dirty sex.

And it's fantastic to rec it on the day Obama signs the DADT repeal into law, because it's not just about the sex, it's about Jensen and his bisexuality, it's about how great a man can look in a uniform, and how the thrill of possibly getting caught is definitely nowhere as good as the thrill of finding out your teammate feels the same way.

Also? HOT.

Excerpt:

Even if his team is cool with Jensen hooking up with guys, that doesn't mean he can walk in a gay bar in his dress uniform. Sad, though, because he knows it would be a hit. On the other hand, he can without a problem order a Cosmo at a terrace that happens to be right next to a gay bar and do some people watching; if his eyes wander to the guys smoking next to the club's door, that's just the way it is.

Why this must be read:
452 words of ridiculously hot pornography that makes your heart pound and your cheeks flush. Because Cougar might be the strong and silent type out in the world, but in the bedroom, he has the filthiest mouth possible. So it's dirty talk and excellent visuals and it's unforgettably furiously sexy.

Excerpt:

Jensen makes a noise in his throat that's awfully close to a yelp, then bites the pillow. Fuck Cougar for making him actually bite a pillow. It's weird and it's squidgy and it's good, it's toe-curling, he's going to bring down the hotel with all this whimpering.

Why this must be read:
Jensen likes to hack. No, I mean, he really likes to hack.

So you get two awesome stories in one. The first is a glorious origin story of how Jensen ends up in the Losers, a ridiculous little nerd boy who loves hacking and gets caught in the worst kind of trouble. The second is a fantastic kinky story where Jensen gets turned on by code, by infiltration, by the flicker of a monitor and the hum of a laptop fan.

And I love the heady combination of the two - delightful history and hot as hell porn.

Excerpt:

He's got one hand on his dick and the other flying across the keyboard of his laptop and it's a game to him. Which can he finish first? He's quiet, of course. He's still got his earpiece in and all that. It just adds to the excitement, the thrill of being caught.

Why this must be read:
At [livejournal.com profile] connotations (a slash con held here in the UK) this year, there was a wall with fanfiction requests on post-its. I wrote "Jensen/Cougar/Clay", not expecting anyone to fill it, because no one really knew the fandom yet.

But Claire did know the fandom. And, across three 3x5 post-it notes, she produced something so mindblastingly hot that I spent the rest of the convention grinning, occasionally pointing, and telling everyone "Man, once I properly pimp this fandom, you are going to DIE when you read that."

And I still die when I read it. I don't normally find double penetration stories particularly interesting, but there's something about the way she's written it, something about the sheer heat, sweat and filth of it all that just makes this incredibly delightful. This is pure pornography, in all its post-it note-sized glory.

Excerpt:

"Please--" Jensen's not above begging, has done it before in worse circumstances. Not above begging, even if the words are swallowed by Cougar before they can leave Jensen's mouth. But he doesn't need to speak, doesn't need to do anything beyond lie there and take it, shuddering and split open as Clay and Cougar just take.

Why this must be read:
As requested on [livejournal.com profile] thelosers_kink:
"From the same arms dealers that brought you environmentally-friendly nukes, the latest in non-lethal chemical weapons: sex pollen!"

The old clichés are totally the best, and Storm Petrel proves it with this short piece of burning flashpaper hotness - a quick bang, the hint of smoke and you're gone.

Ridiculously hot sex, hilarious epilogue and delightfully in-character for something so short and so without plot, this is one of the best kink meme fills ever.

Excerpt:

They’ve been at it for what seems like hours, and Jensen’s starting to shake, every muscle in his body humming taut like a live wire. Cougar hauls him back against his chest, their skin slick together, his dark hair loose with a few strands clinging damply to Jensen’s cheekbone. Jensen moans, and he sounds like bad porn, and he’d be dying of embarrassment if he wasn’t so hot right now, so painfully turned on.

Why this must be read:
You don't often get kinky stories where Jensen's the one taking charge. And this one's so well-written that I want to make Jensen the top in all my future stories, just to have him commanding Cougar like this.

It's hot and soothing at the same time, like one of those pulsing super-strong showers, warm and fierce against your skin. It also has lovely touches about Cougar's inability to talk, the fact that liking penetration doesn't mean you're submissive and the use of Cougar's hat as a symbol of the relationship. Beautiful!

Excerpt:
Cougar could feel the heat coming off Jensen's body as he finally pulled Cougar into an embrace. Cougar wrapped his arms around Jensen's waist and hid his face in the crook of Jensen's neck, breathing deeply. Jensen smelled like gun powder and solder and the fried chicken they had for supper and just safe and home. Cougar shivered again and leaned into Jensen more, letting Jensen support some of his weight.

Length: 1938
Author on LJ: Nominally [livejournal.com profile] glossing, but mostly [personal profile] gloss
Author's Website: glossings
Warnings: Rough sex.

Why this must be read:
There's sadly a dearth of femslash in the fandom - not because we don't have great femslash writers, but because we only have two canon women to work with (and one non-canon). But there's an entire world of superhot women to crossover with, and Gloss gives us what we didn't realise we needed - Aisha/Selena Kyle.

Rough, filthy and starting with a fight because everything about Aisha has to start with a fight, whether it's sex or dying, and it's the kind of glorious fury you only get with really really badass women.

Excerpt:
Whatever else she could say about this woman, Selina couldn't deny that she was beautiful. Enraged, sure, and a little too dependent on a right hook and a little too ready to bite, and (not but) beautiful.

They fought closely, feet shuffling, hips swinging. Their wheezes and grunts fell on each other's skin, their fists and blows landing, missing, spinning and landing again.

It might have been flirtation or foreplay. Selina would have been willing to lay odds that it was.

Length: 5258
Author on LJ: Part of [livejournal.com profile] mumblemutter/[personal profile] mumblemutter
Author's Website: AO3

Why this must be read:
You don't need to have seen Inception to enjoy this story, but knowing the movie adds to the layers of this intense and thoughtful story.

Layers upon layers of dreams and guilt and relationships and how things change but don't change, no matter what you do, and it's all in Clay's head, except it's not, entirely, because things are happening elsewhere too.

It's a fantastic study of Clay and Roque and the betrayal between them. Where the Port of Los Angeles is just a layer to pull back, where Roque is something that might only be in Clay's head, and where revenge and planting ideas sometimes turn out differently than you expected.

Excerpt:
Roque used to say, when they'd made all their money, he wanted to retire, get married, maybe get a couple of kids or so. Clay always laughed; the job was an addiction like no other - building unimaginable worlds and scaling impossible heights. The thrill of the chase, always. Extraction isn't for everyone, but those that get into it tend to stay. There is no real way out once it becomes the only way you sleep.

"Then that isn't a choice, is it," and if his manifestation of Roque is a product of his guilt, then the obvious solution is to stop feeling guilty. Except of course Clay doesn't buy into the whole guilt thing, and Roque betrayed them, not the other way around, so possibly his manifestation of Roque is just his subconscious fucking him over for spite.

"You're getting weary, old man," he tells his reflection, and his reflection agrees, that yeah, he is.

Why this must be read:
As I said in the fandom overview, the entire movie could be seen as Roque and Clay's epic break-up. They both think they're right, they both know what needs to be done, and when they end up not being on the same path, it ends badly.

This could be considered an AU, because it takes place after the movie, with Roque very much alive. It's two incredibly attractive, incredibly rough men with bitterness and regrets and a single handgun between them. And it's furiously hot.

Excerpt:
"What, Clay, getting soft? You think you need a gun to take out an old cripple like me?"

Clay's grin broadened and he shook his head. "Roque, how long have we known each other? You may be a lot of things, but with one eye and no legs at all you'd still be twice as dangerous as anyone I know. If you hadn't wanted that money more than you wanted to kill me, I don't know if I'd be sitting here right now."

"I didn't want to kill you," Roque said, then shrugged at Clay's expression. "Okay, maybe a little. More than that, though, I wanted out, and you just didn't want to let me leave."

Why this must be read:
This is just all the right levels of filthy. Aisha and Clay and heat, the heat of the sun, the heat of alcohol, the heat of sex, and the heat of knowing you've met your match.

It's short and sweet and intense, with such vivid luscious images and sensations. You can feel the sunlight and heat on your face as you read this - or are you secretly blushing? All you know is that it's suddenly gotten hotter in here.

And it's got Aisha pegging Clay, which is just...hell, it's just awesome.

Excerpt:
Spain, and the windows and shutters were open because they'd just spent three weeks in the Pacific Northwest and now Aisha needed the goddamned sunlight. Spain, and the golden afternoon light fell in hot bright pools on the carpet and even the air was warm on her back, the sometimes-wind cooling as it met their sweat. But any work the breeze may have done was in vain, because they were fucking hard enough to keep themselves sweat-soaked, and as hot as the air was, Clay was even hotter around the fingers of her right hand.

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Cougar/Jensen
Length: 4600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] storm_petrel
Author Website: AO3

Why this must be read:
One trope in the fandom that gets played out quite a bit is the concept that Jensen and Cougar really both want each other, but each is completely oblivious to the fact that the other guy wants him.

And what's great about this trope is that it produces, in the right hands, really long, exceedingly snarky stories that read like brilliant romantic comedies. But with guns. And being captured.

Storm Petrel's hands are exceedingly deft at this concept, producing a story that is perfect late Sunday reading.

Excerpt:
This is good, it’s better than good, Jensen’s hands smoothing up and down his spine like he can’t stop touching Cougar’s skin. It feels *good*, and it’s been a long time since anyone touched Cougar and wasn’t trying to kill him. Jensen suddenly shifts, sits up and pushes Cougar down until he’s straddling his hips, and pulls his shirt over his head. Cougar kisses him again, then Jensen drops his head, puts his lips to the edge of the stitches in the hollow of Cougar’s collarbone, and breathes against his skin. “I’d never have told them, not a thing, I swear. But after you were dead, I swear to god I was going to take them apart.”

Why this must be read:
Pooch and Jolene are an amazing pairing, and it's a shame that more isn't written about them. But what is written is beautiful, and this is definitely one of the most beautiful.

Pooch worries about losing his family, but Jolene knows that family isn't just what's shared by blood. It's sweet, it's tender, and it's a delicious little treat, to be savoured and loved.

Excerpt:
"Hey, baby," Jolene says. Her smile is still the most beautiful thing in Pooch's world. She holds up the stuffed penguin—dressed and ready for the beach courtesy of Jensen—and wiggles it. "Come play with us?"

Pooch feels like he's stumbling forward, can't get there fast enough, and he drops to his knees, patting Jamaar's head and leaning in to kiss Jolene, to hold her, to thank God—again—that she's alive.

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Cougar/Jensen
Length: 1461
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] maratonista

Why this must be read:
Maratonista is known for her epic series of angst and tragedy, but I tend to think that this is one of her best stories, full stop. With short bursts of imagery and feeling, the story is so obviously Cougar that it could've been written in bullets from his rifle.

It's so achingly bittersweet and filled with small joys and darkening clouds overhead that it just kills me a little every time I read it.

It's the kind of story that you cling to, tightly, fearing that it'll slip away one day. But while it's still here, you love it.

Excerpt:
It’s not perhaps the first night in their home that Cougar had always dreamed of, but he wakes up with Jensen drooling on his shoulder, and birds chirping in his ear, and the modest, white house with the deck and the porch and the pretty flower bed filled garden is his.

His and Jensen’s.

So maybe it is actually better.

Why this must be read:
Just a little slice of domestic adorableness, where Jolene is trying to set Cougar and Jensen up, Pooch is totally in denial, and Clay just really wants a beer.

It's sweet and delightful, like a piece of leftover pie in the fridge, just waiting to be savoured. And with snappy dialogue and comfortable characters, it's a gentle little gem.

Excerpt:
“I don’t know how you can’t see it,” Jolene counters with a solidarity and determination that keeps them coming to stay with her every so often. “They stand a little too close together when they think no one’s looking. They communicate without talking…”

Clay takes another swig of his beer, taking the opportunity to stare at the ceiling and tune out the rest of Jolene’s list. But he can’t stop “voyeuristic sniper” from permeating his consciousness and attaching firmly to his brain.

Why this must be read:
Jensen battered and bruised with Roque unconscious on his back and Cougar helping him along - it's rough, it's brutal, it's the kind of survival story they'd make a Discovery Channel documentary about, and it feels so *real* that you're battered and bruised just from reading it.

And then a switch is flipped, and it's not just this astounding survival story, it's also this utterly beautiful romance, where Cougar lets Jensen know how he feels, Roque talks too much while concussed, and there is much pwning to be had.

It's an epic, epic story. And it's amazing.

Excerpt:
"You're not going to die," Cougar told him, somewhere between determined and irritable. It was a fine line, but he walked it well.

"I'm not?" Jensen asked, skeptically. "Why's Roque look like he's about to start bawling then?"

Cougar rolled his eyes. "Concussion," he reminded them.

Roque glared at them both, which greatly reassured Jensen. "I'm not about to cry," Roque snarled, somewhat defensively. "I'm fucking seeing two of you."

"Oh." Jensen nodded his understanding. "Must be awesome. No wonder you're all teary-eyed."

Why this must be read:
I am such a sucker for origin stories, and The Losers fandom has several gorgeous ones. But this one is one of my utter favourites. It's about Cougar's family, Cougar's life, and how he became a Loser. And got his hat.

It's elegant, beautiful, and a delight. I was once going to write my own Cougar origin story, but I can't now, because this...this nails it for me.

Excerpt:
Two days later, on vacation in Mexico, he runs across a shop in the airport that sells cowboy hats. He hesitates, because Cougar doesn't really buy things for himself, especially not things like genuine leather cowboy hats, for God's sake, but Jensen's voice is in his head, clear and prodding, and he gives in.

"Idiota," he says for a third time as he hands over his credit card and puts the hat on his head, but this time he is talking to himself.

Why this must be read:

You don't have to have seen Ninja Warrior/Sasuke to understand this story, because while it's about Jensen climbing Mount Midoriyama, it's less about the actual obstacle course and more about Jensen.

It's about childhood dreams, and how you often find out they're not what you expected, or dreamed, but, sometimes - only sometimes and only with certain people - you can still live out your dream. It makes me smile, every time I think of Jensen at the top, standing over the obstacle course, knowing that, if nothing else goes right in his life, that he's conquered this.

Excerpt:

That's when he feels Clay move up behind him, rock-steady Clay. Clay who laughs at all the nerdy things Jensen has to do - there is no choice here. He feels a large hand rest on the center of his back for a moment, pressing between his shoulderblades. Then Clay lifts it and thumps it heavily back down - it stings and aches, it's shades of Nagano and Takeda, and it's awesome beyond words.

Fandom: The Losers

Length: 465 words
Author: Lady Krysis
Website: Dreamwidth / AO3
Why this must be read:

Aisha can be difficult to write - it can be hard to get into her head, to figure out why she does what she does. Is she really going to kill Clay? Does she really want her revenge? Why would she bet on Petunias soccer games and cheer the birth of Pooch's son if she's focused purely on revenge?

It's a little more clear-cut for comics, but it can still be difficult to work her out.

A few authors in the fandom have nailed her though, and [personal profile] lady_krysis is definitely one of those.

She's righteous, she's furious, she's sweet revenge and bitter rage. And in this short story, three scenes of revelation and mourning, you get the sharpness, the beauty, the gloriousness of Aisha.

Excerpt:

Clay is the weapon that Max pointed at her father. The team itself is a weapon, seamless, precise, and Max carelessly discarded them. While Aisha wants to leave them rotting in graves, she doesn't make the same mistake Max did. She reassembles them and gives them a new target.

4th-Dec-2010 07:57 pm 17 Tattoos by Storm Petrel (PG)
Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Gen, but with elements of Pooch/Jolene and Cougar/Jensen
Length: 1020 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] storm_petrel, but primarily [personal profile] storm_petrel
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

The team have a great many tattoos. It's the kind of thing we notice, from Jensen's bull on his arm to Clay's teddy bear head in the soft skin between his fingers and thumb. And what's great about a tattoo is that, no matter what it's of, that tattoo will have a story behind it.

This story is a collection of vignettes, the briefest of descriptions of the tattoos the Losers have. And, in those descriptions, and their reasons for getting them, you see into their lives, their histories, their souls. From Clay's drunken maple leaf to the "CA" on Jensen's back, their tattoos are a part of them as they are part of their skins, and Storm Petrel nails each character with such insight that you'll feel like you know them too.

Excerpt:
5. Pooch has Jolene’s name in discreet dark ink where his wedding band should sit. He got that tattoo a week before he proposed, so he was pretty goddamned relieved when she said yes. On missions, on the run, every night before he goes to sleep, he presses his thumb against it, for comfort and for luck.

Why this must be read:
Dialogue-only stories are difficult to pull off without seeming like too much of an affectation or ridiculously twee. But get a team like the Losers, a talkative dork like Jensen, and a Honduran mission gone awry, and you've got a dialogue-only story that's tense, exciting and delightful.

You can hear the actor's voices saying these words, you can see the characters doing what they're doing, and it's beautifully done.

Excerpt:
Jensen, shut up or I will cut you.

Oh come on, Roque, you know I love you. I love all of my Honduran jungle brothers. I even still love Cougar, though he tried to shoot my ears off last month. I LOVE YOU COUGAR!

"..."

See that silence? That's an 'I love you too' silence.

That's a 'Got your forehead in my crosshairs' silence.

Just a stylistic warning, though. The different characters are represented by changes in the text colour. It looks fine on a white background, but there might be issues if you have a different background colour set up on your browser. However, if you take out the text colouring, it's still fairly easy to figure out who is saying what.

Fandom: The Losers

Why this must be read:
A great introduction to the Losers. Cougar joins the team and discovers there are twelve steps to becoming a Loser. He also learns that murlocks are not mascots, Jensen will happily play Starcraft II all day naked, Clay will shout down anyone for his team, and that the whole chain-of-command thing? It's more for those dicks who live on base.

It's funny, tight, and a real delight. And once you've read it, you'll feel like a Loser too.

Excerpt:

Pooch dropped on to the couch next to Cougar and raised his glass to him. “Congrats dude, you've lasted longer with us than anyone else. Well, since we got stuck with Jensen, that is. You're a Loser now.”

“What about the list?” Cougar asked, tapping his glass against Pooch's and smiling slightly. “I'm only up to nine.”

“When we first got Jensen, the list was only eight things. We've added four things specially because of him.” Clay offered up his smile that generally only popped up when they were neck deep in enemy territory and about to do something stupid. “You live with him. You'll find out sooner rather than later.”
