Why this must be read:

I don't know if there is anyone more prolific in The Eagle fandom than [livejournal.com profile] sineala.  But even more so, it's her eye for details and wonderful characterization that elevates her stories as among the best.  It was difficult to figure out which one of her stories I wanted to rec from the epic Chosen Man to the one that features one of my favorite tropes soulbonds, Children of the Sun.

In the end, I chose this fic as my last rec because I love pining and I loved how much such a simple gesture could evoke so much for Esca.  The way Romans touch each other is something Esca never wants for himself until he meets Marcus and there's a quiet beauty in how Esca starts to pine for Marcus to touch him the same way.  It's a lovely fic that follows along canon and so much is expressed in so few words.

I didn't have time to rec as much as I would've liked but this covers my last time reccing here on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van.  Thank you for the memories and the joy, it's been an honor and a pleasure to rec here.  You'll be missed.

Why this must be read:

Language and the role it can play in a fic, especially in a fandom like The Eagle where the native language of the two main characters is not the same is something I've always found fascinating.  And in this fic, the author does a fantastic job of using language and illustrating the conflict that can arise from it.  For Esca, Latin was something that reminded him of being a slave and he struggles to find peace with hearing Marcus use it when they are together.  But this fic is so much more than exploring the barriers caused by language, it's also a sweet story about love and acceptance.

Why this must be read:

A lovely post-finding the Eagle fic, featuring Marcus and Esca struggling to farm with wonderful details and fantastic writing.  I was impressed at the research, which comes across in so many ways from the details to the setting, that must've gone in writing this fic.  I also really loved the characterization and the pining and just how much Marcus and Esca would risk for each other.  Among my favorite stories to have posted for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide this year.

Why this must be read:

What happens to Marcus and Esca post-film is among my favorite things to read and one recurring scenario is them settling on a farm somewhere.  The details of this particular fic, especially of the setting does a fantastic job of conveying the mood.  Esca has gone to trade for horses and Marcus waits for him to return home but as time passes he begins to lose hope.  The vivid descriptions of the oncoming winter as Marcus quietly despairs at Esca not returning are beautifully written and as a reader you can feel his loneliness and pain.  Another aspect I enjoyed is how the author touched upon Marcus' faith.

Why this must be read:

Whenever I read fusions, I'm always blown away at how seamlessly the author is able to mix two very distinctively different universes together.  Especially when it comes to something like The Eagle and Downton Abbey, which is done so wonderfully in Belle Époque .  But perhaps the best thing about this fic is the spot on voice of Violet Crawley, which is both lovely and hilarious and her perspective on what blossoms between Esca, her nephew and Marcus, the Crawley's new chauffeur.  And I especially loved how Esca and Marcus are portrayed here in Edwardian times and even through Violet's eyes there is so much going on beneath the surface between these two.  There are some amazing details and just wonderful characterizations all around and even if you don't know either fandom, it's a great read.

Why this vid kicks ass: Every frame of this vid packs a punch and it's super beautifully edited to boot. I don't honestly know what I love most about it: the stunning use of scenery, the amazing Esca-focused quick cuts section, or the way it builds Marcus up right from the beginning, humanising him and showing you his best and worst moments. Nothing is extraneous with this vid and it's the kind of watch that'll make your hands itch to read or write a hundred stories in this fandom.

(I couldn't post yesterday so please pretend it's still friday)

Another smaller corner of canon that deserves highlighting is everyone's favourite Uncle. This fic offers a lovely insight into Aquila's past and his worries for Marcus post-canon. With hints of Rome and his own time in the legions in there too it pays tribute to family, both adopted and blood, and warms the little cockles of my heart.

What if the Seal People were actual seal people? I really like this fic for its worldbuilding and the way the mythological aspect of it blends so seamlessly with the canon. The Seal People don't get a lot of focus in fic so finding something with such lovely writing and gentle pathos is a treat.

Why this must be read:

So this fic is set post-book rather than in the filmverse but I really wanted to get some Cottia in this month and you need no knowledge of the book to read it other than that of Marcus and Cottia's union. It's an incredibly beautiful, lyrical piece that paints all three of them with a vivid grace and fills in their world as they build it. The gentle care the author takes with them and the care they take with each other is perfect and heart-warming. It's the kind of fic you'll wish is a million times longer so you never have to stop reading.

So I'm an AU nut, what of it? Esca is a house master at a 50s boarding school and Marcus is the new Latin teacher. The canon is really neatly updated here with the post-WWII setting providing the divide between Italian Marcus and the rest of the British staff. Esca's reluctant slide towards friendship as Marcus sets about trying to charm him is a perfect delicious contrast to the freezing backdrop of the story. It has lovely realistic OCs, adorable food-tasting, and the UST is to die for.

Title: Passion and Profession by demon_rum
Pairing: Marcus Aquila / St. John Rivers
Length: ~127k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] demon_rum
Author Website: On AO3
Why this must be read:

This is one of the most elaborate and amazingly detailed fics in the fandom. It takes us into the Jane Eyre universe and follows St. John Rivers (who, like Esca, is played by Jamie Bell in the 2011 adaptation) as he travels to India and meets one Cpt. Marcus Aquilaine. Rivers is a clergyman and Marcus a soldier and the care given to painting each of those separate lives with all their complications is praise-worthy alone. Throw in what the writer does with language and period culture and you have something seriously impressive. If you're into repressed feelings and historical detail then this is a goldmine and even if you're not it's a totally engrossing and fascinating read. NB. There are three chapters of notes before the start of the story with the warnings located in the second.

Okay so we've had some super intense AUs and some great canonfic and now it's time for the one to make you blush. I will quite happily admit that I love tentacle!fic and I love this one in particular because not only is the imagery scorchingly hot but it has this beautiful mythological feel to that fits so well with the canon. There's so much emotion in what goes unsaid and it mixes hot and sweet perfectly.

Why this must be read:

I like this fic a lot because it gives us a look inside Esca's head whereas most fic tends to focus on Marcus' POV. Here you get to watch him go from dismissing all Romans to coming round to Marcus to the gradual development of the deep understanding they have of each other canonically. It also looks at the miserable situation Esca ends up in with regards to his knowledge of the eagle and the Ninth. Again, that's not something you see touched on often and the internal battle between his loyalty to his past and his loyalty to Marcus gives you a whole new perspective on his actions and motivations.

Why this must be read:

This is another amazing AU of the fandom. Marcus is an undercover police officer sent to infiltrate a slave-trafficking organisation which trades in fighters. He intervenes in a fight only to find himself the owner of one of the slaves -- Esca. It's a gritty and screwed-up universe but if you like plot and tension and really well-developed relationships this is a treasure trove.

Why this must be read:

This fandom has some awesome AUs and this is one of the best. Marcus is an ex-cop with an interest in road bikes while Esca is a scruffy motocross kid. Starting off with a scorching one-shot the story then opens up into a longer piece with some great plotting. The backstory here really shines as does the crazy chemistry the two of them have going on. I also love how in-depth the characterisation is and the care given to portraying both their worlds. No canon knowledge required at all to read this one but prior knowledge does allow an appreciation of how well all the canonical characters are represented.
