Title: Little Talks by AuKestrel Pairing: Ray Kowalski ( due South)/Christopher Hayden ( Gilmore Girls) Author on LJ: aukestrelAuthor Website: Her Due South stories may be found on her websiteWhy this must be read: Ray Kowalski, fresh out of the Academy, is off-again with his girlfriend Stella. He's stuck at an event with her family, but fortunately Stella's got a hot cousin in the Navy and he is able to distract Ray. This story is full of love and lust and cars and speed and sex and self-discovery. It's all the very best things about being young - feeling invincible, untouchable and free, like something out of a Springsteen song. This fic gives us a wonderful glimpse into a young Ray K, and the sex is scorching hot, and will definitely push all the right buttons if you've ever had an impure thought about Ray's GTO. ;) If you enjoy the story, you can leave feedback for the author here. Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Luke/Lorelai Length: 4500 Author on LJ: fourteenlines Author Website: LJ fic tag, Why this must be read: Ah Stars Hollow, the place pretty much anyone would want to live if you're of the small town inclined. Yet what if a nuclear war was unleashed on Earth? How would Stars Hollow and our favorite residents fare? This stunning fic offers one scenario. Fic of this nature should always be applauded. It takes the world of Gilmore Girls and thrusts upon it a frightening real world possibility and to tell this particular story though the eyes of Lane Kim's is inspired. Title: blue eyes electric with sin (and a boy who wants to soak it in) Pairing: Jess Mariano/Becky Author on LJ: aragons Author Website: LJ fic tagWhy this must be read: This one is short but potent and oh so inspired. Gilmore Girls and Sin City are at opposite ends of the storytelling spectrum, but their common denominator of actress Alexis Bledel makes them fair game for a mistaken identity story. The character of Jess is spot on and the world of Sin City is instantly recognizable. The last spoken line will make anyone familiar with both fandoms sit up and take notice. Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Luke/Rachel, Luke/Lorelai Length: 3039 words Author on LJ: fairy_tale_echo Author Website: LJ fic tag, fairy_tale_echo at Black & White & Read Why this must be read: I liked Rachel, Luke's globe-trotting, photographer former girlfriend. I could see what attracted Luke to her. Aside from being beautiful she had an effortless grace about her. There was no drama with Rachel and she jelled nicely with Luke's low-key nature. I also loved that she took Luke at face value. With Luke what you see is what you got and Rachel understood that. However, despite all that, by the time Rachel made her appearance/re-appearance in Stars Hollow in late season one Luke was clearly a man with different needs. Does he welcome the familiar that is Rachel or does he wait for the possibility of Lorelai? With this wonderful introspective fic, Luke examines his relationship with both women. First, there's Rachel, on the morning after her return. Their encounter is juxtaposed with Luke and Lorelai's first night together a few years later. The prose in this fic is beautiful and lyrical. There's a tiny amount of angst with a nice dose of luvin' thrown in for good measure. ( Excerpt ) We Shine Like a Burning Star by fairy_tale_echo

Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Gen with the lightest hint of Luke/Lorelai Length: 1861 words Author on LJ: n/a Author Website: Cadence Daly's stories at Black & White & Read Why this must be read: I love this particular story because it's effortlessly in tune with the relationship between Lorelai and her routine. She's a frequent patron of Luke's diner, she has a regular shtick with him, and Lorelai is filled with a number of endearing quirks. The entire town is very aware of all this and when Lorelai is forced with the unenviable decision of where to relocate once she and Luke break up, it creates an unbalance. Try as she might she can't quite find her equilibrium. Cadence Daly does a wonderful job of capturing Lorelai in all her adorable quirkiness. It's in no way difficult to see Lorelai passing her time in the exact way ( Excerpt )

Hello all! I'm abby82 and I'll be driving the Gilmore Girls crack_van for this month. The first GG fic I ever read came compliments of a crack_van rec and I became determined to return the favor in some way. The crazy winter weather we've been having has gotten us a free pass from Friday Night Dinners and instead we're piling onto the couch with Lorelai and Rory. We've got Red Vines, and pizza, burgers from Luke's and the entire chicken column from Al's Pancake World. That should keep us well fell fed for at least half of our journey. Right? Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: none, Gen Length: 3155 words Author on LJ: n/a Author Website: Netherfield stories at Black & White & Read and at fanfiction.net, Why this must be read: This is a wonderful gem of a story. It's pre-series and believably addresses the difficult financial situations that a young Lorelai must have encountered as she tried to raise Rory. Every cent was precious and the kindness of the inn's staff was always welcomed. And Rory, as a four almost five year old, is instantly recognizable. This story will instantly make you ache and cheer for the young mother and her daughter as they try to navigate their young lives beyond the privilege of Hartford and within the warmth of Stars Hollow. Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Lorelai/Luke, Rory/Jess Author on LJ: kieyraAuthor Website:kieyra's fic on LJWhy this must be read:I'm going to wrap up the month with a story that makes me happy every time I read it. "Take Whatever You Can Get" works for me on so many levels. It's one of the best explorations of Luke I have ever read. It's filled with the kind of moments that make you squee, or sigh, or completely fall for a 'ship, and those moments happen to be about three of my favorite pairings on the show- Lorelai/Luke, Rory/Jess, and Luke and Jess. This story is an amazing read as a fan. It's also an amazing read on its own- it has stayed with me, and it's not uncommon for me to recall a snippet or phrase that seemed especially right or fitting as I go about my day. I love the way Luke sees the world. The way he sees love, and responsibility, and other people. "Take Whatever You Can Get" does what fanfic is meant to do- it taps into that mindset and allows you to have more, and better, of what you love from the source material. Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Rory/Paris Author on LJ: jae_wAuthor Website: jae_w's Gilmore Girls ficWhy this must be read:I ship Rory with a lot of characters. Rory changes herself to suit whoever she's with- her mother, a love interest, the townies- her interactions are never static. Her relationship with Paris is one of the most challenging she's involved in, and Paris always demands that Rory test her boundaries (though Paris is awfully fond of her own). In Boston Marriage, she does so in an especially hilarious and Paris-like manner. This story is most immediately funny, but upon reading it a second time (and you will want to) the nuances of the ways the girls interact are striking in their detail and grace. Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Lorelai/Luke, Luke/Rachel, Lorelai/Christopher Author on LJ: lulaboAuthor Website: Lula Bo's Gilmore Girls FictionWhy this must be read:The stories I've recced so far have all addressed relationships as a whole. What I love about this fic is its slice of life quality. It feels like such a realistic immersion in the character's lives. Every detail is spot on and feels like a revelation into characters you already know and love. ( Excerpt )31 December 1995

Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Lorelai/Dean, implied Dean/Jess Author on LJ: monimalaAuthor Website: http://malisita.com/Why this must be read:I have such a weakness for Lorelai/Dean. They have an effortless chemistry together- one that you maybe shouldn’t notice, but is definitely there. This story is delightful- nasty in all the right ways and very, very funny. Not to mention seriously hot. It’s as wicked and strangely appealing as the pairing that inspired it. ( Excerpt )Love In The Time of Cauliflower

Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Rory/Jess Author on LJ: zarahemlaAuthor Website: http://if.sweetdarkness.net/Why this must be read:What I love about this story is how it blends all the things that are essential to the Gilmore world- the townies, the banter, Rory’s absolute sincerity- and places them in an entirely different context while maintaining their integrity. Everything Zen is told from Jess’ point of view and the writing has a gorgeously literary quality to it. It’s wonderfully detailed and has an off kilter sense of humor that really sells Jess’ frustration. What impresses me most though, is how in such a short story, zarahemla captures the best and worst of Jess so thoroughly. ( Excerpt )Everything Zen

Hi, I'm poisonapple73 and I'll be reccing for Gilmore Girls this month. Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Lorelai/Luke Author on LJ: thestickywicketAuthor Website: http://macha.healthyinterest.net/Why this must be read:Set the summer after Season 3, the sense of anticipation in this story is terrific. Lorelai and Luke, are, at their best, a fantastic example of a drawn out coupling that teases and satisfies simultaneously. The ending feels all the better for the wait you endure. Postcards from the Edge captures that sensation perfectly and uses the nature of their relationship to develop both Lorelai and Luke. ( Excerpt )Postcards from the Edge

Fandom: Popslash Pairing: Gen (vague het) Author on LJ: stubbleglitterAuthor Website: UnawareWhy this must be read: Whenever I re-read this I can’t help but think of a quote from Much Ado About Nothing “If they were but an hour married, they would talk themselves mad.” So now I’ve proven my over-educated cultural roots you should all go and read this. Because it’s cute and funny and the banter is wonderful. RORY: Grandma, this is International Pop Sensation Justin Timberlake. EMILY: Is this true? JUSTIN: Well, I like to think of it as "multinational," myself. "International" just sounds so conceited, don't you think? EMILY: Well, he certainly talks like he would fit in at this house.Stars Hollow

Title: Stars Hollow by Maggie (Stubbleglitter) Pairings: um, I don't even know how to discribe this - maybe, N/A Author on LJ: StubbleglitterAuthor Website: ..unaware..stubbleglitter Why this must be read: This is one of those stories I giggle through everytime. It is definitely Fanon based vs Canon and yet ... If you're a Gilmore Girls fan also, this will make so much more sense. The author does an amazing job of bringing *NSYNC into Star's Hollow. It was definitely written before Rory went to college and *NSYNC put out Celebrity. It's very fresh. WB would be proud. This is one of those stories I've printed. Long after I will have left this fandom, I know I'll still go back and reread this one. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. Stars Hollow

Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Luke/Lorelai Author on LJ: unknown - feel free to drop a note if you do. Author Website:FF.net profileWhy this must be read: I may be going a bit overboard tonight, but this story makes such a great bookend to my first rec, I couldn't resist. Because the thing is, three years later, Lorelai and Luke did dance together, at his sister Liz's wedding. It later prompted Lorelai to proclaim with glee, " Luke can waltz," and it made fangirls everywhere swoon. Lorelai's POV on this night, with a clever format, and chronicles the beginning of something we'd all been waiting years to see. ( excerpt )The Things She Knows by Lula Bo

Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Rory/Dean, and some hilariously inappropriate Dean/Lorelai fantasies Author on LJ: moscaAuthor Website: homoneuroticaWhy this must be read: And now for something completely different...a sixteen-year-old Dean fantasizes about his girlfriend's mother, because "for all Rory's fine qualities, up to and including her unusually endearing manner of shoplifting cornstarch and her insights into Oompa Loompa culture, Rory wasn't sexy."Again, this fic captures the quirky feeling of the show, and also tells a story that's just so wrong it's right. Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS Pairing: Luke/Lorelai (yes, again. It's a theme, just roll with it.) Author on LJ: mandysbitchAuthor Website: Mandysbitch.comWhy this must be read: I debated which of Christine's two Gilmore stories to rec, but I decided to go with "Pancake" because it's hilarious and bizarre, and captures the typical tone of the show flawlessly. Lorelai attempts to make pancakes for Luke, after they've gotten together. She fails miserably. She becomes convinced that they're doomed. She references "Macarthur Park." It's fantastic. First off, I have to apologize. I should have finished this, erm, almost a month ago. But I've been sick, and real life has otherwise interfered with my crack_vanish ambitions. I plan to post some fantastic recs, but this recap was the best I could do without putting it off for yet another week and officially becoming the biggest small-fandom loser in Crack Van history. I'm also going to point you to The WB's website for this show, because they've got a summary of current plot twists as well as pictures of many of the main characters. Under the circumstances, it's the best I could do. ( Gilmore Girls mini-overview: a primer for the uninitiated. Beware lest you be mocked. )PS. I'm Shaye, you may remember me from crack_van turns for Farscape, The West Wing, and SportsNight. At least I think those are the ones I've done.

Title: Homesick by Jae Pairing: Ryan/Rory Author on LJ: jae_wAuthor Website: I will not be afraid of boybandsWhy this must be read: Well, I read it because I'll read pretty much anything Jae writes, and I know how much she loves those Gilmore Girls. But it's a great crossover crack offering because even though I've only seen a handful of Gilmore eps, the use of Ryan's POV and an elegant, sincere storytelling style made it come alive anyway, made me feel like I knew Rory and what Ryan saw in her. OC-wise, this takes place in an AU departing from show canon after the season one finale. I have no idea where or if it fits into GG, but Rory is in LA, too. This story is filled with Ryan's regret, his lost life in Newport, his determination to make sure his kid has more choices than he'd gotten. It seems to make perfect sense that a girl like Rory brings all that to the surface, even just in one conversation they have in bed, late at night, watching the cars go by on the highway.
