Hi there, I'm dorothy1901, and I'm driving the crack van for Marvel Comics fandom this month. (Our motto: If you think the fanfic's cracktastic, wait until you see the canon.) Fandom: MARVEL COMICS Pairing: None Length: 4.5k words Author on IJ: oneangrykateAuthor Website: Unknown Why this must be read: This story practically defines "bittersweet." Set after the events of Civil War but before Secret Invasion, it tells of a well-meant effort by the Young Avengers to undo Steve Rogers' death. They have a possible fix, and the Young Avengers -- at least some of them -- are willing to give it a try. As Kate says to Eli, “Look, it either works or it doesn't. If it doesn't work, then no harm done. If it does work, then everyone will be too busy piling on the hallelujahs that even you couldn't stay cranky for long.” There's a third possibility, though: it works, but without the hallelujahs. Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (YOUNG AVENGERS) Pairing: Billy Kaplan/Teddy Altman Length: 7648 words Author on LJ: attilatehbunAuthor Website: bunsfootWhy this must be read:This is a gorgeous, slightly surreal look at Teddy - what it means to be a shapeshifter, (*born* a shapeshifter) and also a teenage boy in love (with an active fantasy life [grins]). attilatehbun's use of language is also quite lovely, a soft and winding voice that fits quite well with both the story and Teddy's personality. Added bonus - hot, fumbling teen!sex, a great (if brief) Eli, and an even better Billy. Billy wears stupid t-shirts. He wears stupid t-shirts, and he bites his nails, down to the quick, practically bloody, and he runs at the mouth, but he smiles a lot, in an honest way, and when he learns what Teddy's powers are, he looks really thoughtful and says, "That must be, I don't know, tough."
Teddy blinks, and opens his mouth to ask what Billy means, but before he can speak, Iron Lad - or rather, Nathaniel - claps his hands together and says, "So, um, I guess we're all here now," so Teddy shifts back to Team Mode. It's new, different from what he used to think of as Team Mode, but he likes it, so he pays attention and resolves to see if he can't pull Billy aside later to find out what he meant by that.whatever's living will yourself become

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (AVENGERS) Pairing: Tony Stark/Steve Rogers Length: 1683 words Author on LJ: atomicskullAuthor Website: Fic master listWhy this must be read:It's a quiet, gentle piece, lovingly characterized. As much as I adore heroics and drama and tension (all varieties thereof), it's nice to slow down and and take a peek at an early morning, with Steve and Tony happy, sleepy, and (largely) angst free. Also, Steve with paper and charcoal is one of my favorite mental images. Long, gesture lines, swoops and hard angles. The pencil is hard against the paper, leaves faint lines. All he wants is a simple sketch in lead. Outlines, really. Simple definition. When he’s done with that, he picks up the charcoal, starts in on the sketch. Little rough lines, shadows, fleshing out the sketch, giving it depth, leaving bright whites to balance it out. Tony’s hair is a mess of quick, black flicks, with just a little bit of the paper peeking through in places. His skin, shadows and highlights. Steve rubs at the charcoal with a finger, smearing it, making the marks soft and smooth. The sheet wrapped around Tony’s legs he leaves in rough lines, contrasts against the soft shades of the skin. He’s just putting the last shadows on the torso when a voice rough with sleep snakes into his reverie.

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (YOUNG AVENGERS) Pairing: Gen (Some background Billy/Teddy, but very much not the point)Length: 1895 words Author on LJ: iphignia939Author Website: " fanfic" tagged entries on iphignia939Why this must be read:This is a beautiful, heartbreaking look at Molly Altman, Teddy's mother. We don't learn much about her in the comics, sadly, and this fic does a fantastic job at filling in the blanks. The child opens its eyes and stares at her. His eyes are small and blue, and focused on her. He yawns.
Instinctively, the woman reaches out and brushes the child’s hair from his face. “Hello,” she whispers, tasting unfamiliar words on her tongue. “I am your mother.”
If she knew the Empress better, perhaps she would be able to decipher the expression on the other woman’s face. But she does not.on the lips of all children

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (AVENGERS) Pairing: Tony Stark/Steve Rogers Length: 4259 words Author on LJ: crimsonquillsAuthor Website: CrimsonQuills.com | " fic (my stories)" tagged entries on crimsonquills (most recent) Why this must be read:I had a hard time picking out a fic of Nix's to rec - she's written so many, and they're all good. Finally decided on this one because, well. It's gleefully cliche ridden (hypothermia! cuddling huddling for warmth!), hot as hell, and starts with the team (Spiderman! Wolverine!) fighting a dragon. A dragon. In the snow. For Dr. Strange. He was moving too fast and the footing was too poor to stop now; Steve scooped up his weapon and prepared to spin aside, hoping the disc would be enough to protect him. But even as the rush of freezing air told him he'd cut it too close, a red and gold streak slammed into the side of the dragon's head. Steve scrambled out of the way as Iron Man fired his repulsors point blank into the dragon's cheek. It wasn't enough to hurt the beast, but it knocked the great head aside. Iron Man shot up into the air, away from the jaws...
...and into range of the uninjured wing. "Iron Man!" Steve shouted, but though the golden Avenger jetted to one side, the long spike tipping the wing slammed into him with all the force of the dragon's rage and pain. Iron Man went tumbling through the air, so far and so fast that Steve actually lost sight of him.Good Things Come in Cold Packages

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (YOUNG AVENGERS) Pairing: Billy Kaplan/Teddy Altman Length: Just under 10k for the main story, just over with the extras. Author on LJ: fullmetal_cuteAuthor Website: dorksidefikerWhy this must be read:A fluffy/romantic House of M AU where Billy is William, son of the House of Magnus and Teddy is Dorrek, Skrull Emperor. There are shenanigans! Misunderstandings! Good characterization! Politics! In other words, an all 'round good time. Also longish, which is rare in this fandom. "Billy," the prince said, sticking out a hand. Of course, only his brother actually called him Billy, but Dori didn't need to know that. He had to be new, if he didn't know who William was, and in the prince's mind, this was not a bad thing. In fact, as Dori's warm, dry hand closed around his own, he thought it was a very good thing indeed.Building a House

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (Avengers) Pairing: Tony Stark/Steve Rogers Length: 4857 words Author on LJ: wired_lizardAuthor Website: The Letterblade LibraryWhy this must be read:Because there's a scene, where a naked Steve is riding armored!Tony piggyback down the corridors of a spaceship and shooting down Skrulls, that just gets more awesome every time I read it. The mental image, folks. Well, okay, also because it's an incredibly cathartic fix-it!fic for the Civil War arc (you know the bit. Or if you don't, go read the comicsverse section of the Marvel overview - you'll need it) - the characterization is fantastic (especially the Tony-voice), the writing is smooth, and the fix is plausible (you know, considering). It's also the first fic I ever read in the Avengers fandom and thus can totally be blamed for my current obsession adoration. --- The term prison lab applies, another portion of his mind notices, not just because it's Skrulls and that's pretty much their default, but because there's a tall, pale body on a worktable, sealed under glass. Snow White, bleeps one corner of his associative matrix. Identity confirmed, bleeps another. Identity confirmed. Identity confirmed. Everybody Got Naked and We Got Cap Back Day

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS (YOUNG AVENGERS) Pairing: Billy Kaplan/Teddy Altman Length: 2387 words Author on LJ: holliAuthor Website: Holli's FanfictionWhy this must be read:A short, sweet, and fantastically characterized get together story set pre-series. Billy's adorable in his spazziness, teenage lust, and utter, utter cluelessness; Teddy's obviously smitten and trying so damn hard. Also, and I realize these things are objective, but end's pretty hot. The thing was, he really needed to not zap people with his magic lightning, because he was not going to be much of a superhero if he blew his secret identity the first time someone shoved him in the lunch line. Maybe even that was thinking ahead too much-- he didn't have a real costume yet, he didn't even have a *code name*, and being a superhero thus far had mostly consisted of listening to Iron Lad fret about the impending arrival of Kang the Conqueror, watching Eli scowl and demand to know when they were going to actually fight some actual crime, and trying desperately not to look at Teddy's ass. This last was not going well, because Teddy kept coming over with new versions of his costume and *modeling them.* Billy was pretty sure he'd be lucky to get out of today's meditation session with only the light bulbs in his room exploded.Into luminous air

Hiya, folks! My name's _fx and I'll be driving the Marvel crack van this month - pleasure to meet you! Climb on in, buckle up, and enjoy the ride [grins]. I'll be doing recs from the Avengers, Young Avengers, and Runaways comics (hurray!) and, before I start, I thought I'd give you a bit of an introduction to the Young Avengers (you can find a fantastic look at the Avengers in cupidsbow original Marvel overview). Young Avengers is up first, Runaways will be up as soon as I finish writing it out (I, uh, may have gotten a bit carried away. And there are a *lot* of them, you know?) Runaways proved too much for my brain to handle. 'ware the spoilers, y'all. ( Young Avengers )
