So! To close out the month of Haven here, where I hope I’ve given the general spread of the fandom, I shall close out with a fic that I think has a lot of what I love about Haven (and the fandom)- friendship, Audrey’s awesome personality, and OT3.

This fic starts out with Audrey and Duke having fantastically friendship moments where Audrey doubts who she is and needs some cheering up and Duke is there to provide booze, support, and interesting stories about his past. And it blooms into a lovely OT3 because Audrey is someone who will take charge and won’t be trapped by memories- her own (even if they aren’t real), Duke’s or Nathan’s.
A lovely fic where everyone comes to terms with who they are.

For all the stubbornness and obstinacies Duke brings with him in his character, it means there’s a whole lot of unwavering determination and the ability to hope. Something like fate or destiny is never going to get its grip while Duke’s around, and for Audrey in season 3, that’s something to gravitate towards. Written before the season 3 finale.

I was going to go for something that was a little more trio balanced and I had a gorgeous Audrey-centered OT3 one in mind, but simply put, I couldn't help myself because this is my favourite Haven fanvid- hands down.

It's just so much fun. The editing is fantastic, and it does a brilliant job exploring (and slashing) Nathan and Duke's relationship- both the good times (when they have each other's back) and the bad (when they beat each other up a whole lot). Plus all the times in between where they egg each other on or pull on each other's pigtails.
Plus, serious mellow character explorations can be done really well, but it seems like with someone who flaunts the 'rakish bad boy' image like Duke does, this song is just too perfect?

Duke and Nathan, left to their own devices would probably try killing each other. Which really explains their dynamics early on in the show. But they get past that eventually. This fic really shows how Audrey brings so much balance and good things to the people around her. All the friendship and attraction on display in this fic is fantastic.

It didn't seem real before. Not until Duke got a third set of dishes for his boat.

Nathan has a hard time being honest with himself about the things he wants. And he's kind of in denial. From his perspective, it seems so easy for Audrey and Duke, but the POV here really does a great job in drawing Nathan’s habit of internalizing and holding back.
Meanwhile, Duke's pushing and pulling at Nathan to get him to loosen up while Audrey rolls with all the punches and takes charge when she feels like it. Even when they're fighting they all fit together too well.

It might take readers a moment to orient themselves to the flow, but the jumps really serve to highlight the different moods that exist in various points of Nathan’s life. Nathan’s relationship with Audrey moves through its stages out of order, and her presence or absence is so well reflected.

Getting Audrey back is only the beginning of their story. It only gets more complicated from there.

Absolutely fantastic post-season 2 finale fic that did a fine job tiding me over to season 3.
For a fic of this type though, it even manages to work without having seen the season 2 finale.

Season 2 had highlighted some of the changing character relationships, and the finale left everyone in a bad place, as season finales tend to do with their dramatic cliffhangers and such. Enter a resolution to the cliffhanger and a Trouble that forces stubborn people to actually acknowledge emotions.

Audrey disappears like the season 3 plot arc threatened, and Duke and Nathan are left to pick up the pieces. There's a bit of a hole left in both their worlds so they cling to each other a bit, maybe in her memory at first. Maybe her presence always is a factor in their relationship- but it evolves into something all its own as well.

Haven, Maine is a town full of mysteries, but even among the weirdness, John Winchester is a puzzle. At first, Audrey Parker is only intrigued. When a series of strange deaths appears to involve him, she decides she needs to solve the puzzle soon. But John, too, is trying to solve one of Haven's mysteries, and this one involves Audrey herself.

Gabriel pulls John Winchester out of Hell and leaves him in Haven. And John can't leave town.
This universe provides some Supernatural-universe explanations for the events and Troubles in Haven while keeping the Haven characters truthful to their own show. John Winchester's an interesting addition to the Trouble filled Haven, and Audrey might have a more epic history than she might imagine.

It's a great creative mashup of two universes that really seems to have nothing to do with each other, but manages to keep all the elements of those two canon true to their own internal logic.
There are passing references to the timeline in Supernatural up the end of season 6.

I think this is technically a WIP, but it hasn't been updated since 2011, and it's not like the fic is lacking an ending.
This is a collection of snippets between the trio- conversations, moments, thoughts- in different variations (pairings, singles, trio) in different moods. It shows the highs and lows of their relationship and it is gorgeously written. No actual plot, but great character exploration.

In a place like Haven, it wasn't just good fences that made good neighbors.

Someone in Haven using their Trouble for good! Or, at least, trying to keep Nathan from being lonely by engineering situations to get him together with those lovely people he has all that chemistry with.
Fun, lighthearted, and slight silly in a good way. It provides a nice use of an outsider’s pov where it seems like some of the people in Haven want to look out for each other. And clichéd situations leading to threesomes can be a lot of fun.

Besides all the shipping the fic does so well, there is something to be said about well written gen-fic.

Don’t let the fanfic.net archive deter you. This is sweet adorable friendship fic at its best. Duke and Nathan are slowly getting over their bad history. And, typical for them, they make the best team when they want to help Audrey out. There’s fluffy bonding over terribly bad movies and characters being happy, which canon could have more of.

I think there's something to be said about fic that manages to pack smut and character exploration into such a small amount of words. This is short, frantic, hot, and manages to whiplash to 3 different Nathan-related emotions pretty flawlessly.

Duke and Nathan used to be friends -- more than friends. When they were, getting out of Haven seemed like the only way to get free of their history there, but getting out and leaving it behind prove to be two very different things.

To round out the trio of ships because it can all work in whatever combination, here's Duke/Nathan.

I felt this pairing needed something a little lengthier because these two characters have so much history together. Audrey gets into Haven in the first episode of the show and develops relations that we see as the show goes on. But these two boys grew up and spent so much of their lives aware of each other before Audrey ever walked into town.
This lengthy behemoth felt kind of perfect for conveying that.

It’s entirely pre-series, starting from when they were teenagers and friends (and a whole lot more) and how their families and lives led them to where they ended up at the start of the series - not friends, kind of hating each other.
In a way, it’s a slow build to mild angst considering we know at the beginning of the series, they’re at each other’s throats half the time. On the other hand, it presents such a deep pool of background story for two characters that wouldn't reveal it themselves.

I think this fic was written before the season 2 episode 'Sins of the Fathers' where we learn about what roles Duke and Nathan's fathers' had the last Trouble cycle when the previous incarnation of Audrey was in town, and what roles Duke and Nathan are supposed to have now. This fic feels a little more tragic for me in light of that episode.

Last time was the innocent sweetness of Nathan/Audrey. Here's some Duke/Audrey.

No real spoilers except for what the arc of season 3 is. Not like the actual story line, just like the setup of 'X might happen at the end of the season!' where X is kind of like fate/destiny, and some people refuse to let go of their ability to make choices.
Maybe there’s something to be said for running away.

Duke and Audrey have a dynamic on the show where (when there isn't terrible drama) they tend to loosen up and get comfortable around each other. And sometimes they make vague references to emotions and inner turmoil to each other unlike some relationships on this show and others where everyone just clamps right down on everything. They fell into being laughy giggly friends and are pretty supportive of each other.

The relationship that's on this display in this fic is absolutely gorgeous. Two people get out of a tense, toxic situation and maybe the world seems like sunshine again.

So, to keep all my Haven recs from being OT3, I'll try to shine a light on the various parings amongst the trio and some of the specific dynamics that exist between the separate duos.

Nathan brings Audrey to a town-famous site on a stakeout. This is near the beginning of the series, so they’re still finding things out about each other and their relationship is slowly developing. Nathan is so internal, and Audrey brings comradery and a sweet energy to their interactions. There’s also some lovely world building to flesh out the town of Haven itself and this fic really does capture some of the lighthearted character development the show had early on before all the angst and tension set in.

Lucky Stone

Haven was the kind of place where, if one of your waitresses missed her shift twice and wasn't answering her cell phone, you called the cops. Or in Duke's case, you called your friend on the police force and asked if she's heard anything.

Totally canonically possible body-swapping trope-usage. (Surprised they haven't done it yet on the actual show yet.) Duke gets to experience Nathan’s cut-off-from-all-physical-sensation special powers and maybe it all leads to some needed interpersonal insights. Hanging over the characters’ heads is the season 3 arc involving Audrey’s possible future disappearance which all comes together in an explosion of admitted emotions in the end.

Starting off a month of Haven and trying to sell more people on the show/fic, here is one of the most popular with the OT3 according to AO3. No surprise that it's this one.

Cold Light is a case-fic that could fit right in with the actual show, while developing, building up, and paying off on a great Audrey/Nathan/Duke dynamic.
All the characters are perfect in their actions and interactions. Nathan is thoughtlessly heroic and self contained, Duke is snarky and does a good job at hiding his insecurities, and Audrey takes charge and cuts through everyone’s halfhearted attempts at covering things up. The actual plot drama is a bit of fun as well.
