Fandom: NCIS:LA Pairing: None, Gen Length: 1,300 words Author on LJ: cjmarloweAuthor Website: cj's coffeehouseWhy this must be read: Written for femgenficathon, this story is an excellent peek into the weirdness that is the daily life of Hetty Lange. cjmarlowe nails Hetty's voice as well as the richness of her background and how she's not afraid to use it to the benefit of her people. "Do you think I did not read the email before I sent it?" said Hetty. "Do you think I simply dashed something like that off thoughtlessly when it comes to Armani? You'll notice I did add a notation for an adjustment to the bust to accommodate falsies."Read the whole story! San Diego, Saint Petersburg, Seville

Hi! I’m drlense and I’ll be driving the Crack Van this month for NCIS: Los Angeles, aka NCIS: LA, aka NCIS: Gay. NCIS: LA is a U.S. television show that airs Tuesday nights at 9pm on CBS. The first season ended in May, 2010, and the second season premiere will air on September 21, 2010. NCIS: LA is a spin-off of NCIS, which itself was a spin-off of JAG. Both NCIS and NCIS: LA involve the fictional agents of the not-so-fictional Naval Criminal Investigative Service, a US law enforcement agency that investigates crimes that involve members of the Navy, the Marine Corps and their families. The NCIS shows are in some ways typical crime procedurals, except the criminals or victims (and sometimes both!) are in the Navy. Let’s get to the overview! I should warn you that under the cut you will find a lot of pictures of very pretty people (aka not dial-up friendly), spoilers for the first season of NCIS:LA, and a terrible overuse of parentheses. ( Come this way! )

Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Gen (could be read as pre-slash, Sam/G) Length: ~500 words Author on LJ: drlenseAuthor Website: Fic Tag on LJWhy this must be read: Because anyone who's seen the show knows Callen's a pain in the ass on stakeouts. This little gem could definitely be a scene from the show. The voices ring true, and capture the weirdly intimate and affectionate nature of the Sam and G partnership. Vidder: Titacosta Musical artist: One Republic Pairing: Gen - Ensemble Cast Vidder on LJ: tita_undomielVidder's website: YouTube ChannelWhy this vid kicks ass: There aren't a lot of vids out there (yet) for NCIS: LA, but this one is a nice, punchy intro to the show. You get a glimpse of the cast, a feel for the energy of the show. I think it nicely hints at the playfulness of the series, while teasing us to find out more. I'm a little late for crossover day, but better late than never, right? Title: Abnormal Psych Pairing: None - Gen Length: ~5725 words Author on LJ: fortysixthhourAuthor Website: Fic at AO3Why this must be read: This story is a nice change of pace, and something we don't find a lot of (yet) in NCIS: LA fandom. It's a case story, a cross-over (with Psych), and the POV is the character of NCIS: LA Operational Psychologist Nate Getz. The fic nicely gives voice to a character that tends to be somewhat one-dimensional in the show, and provides access to his interior thoughts and analyses as he observes Sam and G, Shawn and Gus, Jules and Lassie. There are spot-on Shawn Spencerisms and pineapple references galore, plus I can totally hear Sam saying "They have a psychic" with much the same intonation as Boromir's "They have a cave troll" in LOTR. Much fun! ( 'They have a psychic,' Sam growls. )Read the story: Abnormal PsychAnd don't forget to feedback the author.

Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen Length: ~2035 words Author on LJ: lady_krysisAuthor Website: Fic at AO3Why this must be read: Banter. And handcuffs. Established Sam/G get ready for the undercover mission with the militia (episode 1.8, Ambush). There's affection and heat and a playful flirting to it all that culminates in something far more intense. I like this fic the way Callen likes explosions and poorly-executed plots. That is to say, a lot. ( 'There's a lot you don't know about me, G,' Sam says with an easy nonchalance. )Read the story: Mr. Nothing's Got a LotAnd don't forget to feedback the author.

Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen (could be pre-slash) Length: ~1000 words Author on LJ: lucyloooAuthor Website: Lucy's FicWhy this must be read: One of the easiest ways into a series for a fanfic writer is to imagine those in-between scenes. What happened during that commercial break? What didn't the audience see? Here, Lucy sets the scene just prior to Sam and G's stakeout in the episode "Search and Destroy" (1.4) - you know the one that involves lollipops and origami? Yeah. Here's the "Before." You can imagine the "After." ( A tiny teaser )Read the story: FixateAnd don't forget to feedback the author.

Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen Length: ~6683 words Author on LJ: thefannishwaldoAuthor Website: Fic on AO3Why this must be read:The show's only been on a year and there isn't a ton of fanfic out there for it yet, but luckily Waldo has produced several stories, including a couple of longer ones. This one picks up a fairly common theme - Dom, the newbie, is trying to figure out exactly what the nature of that amazing partnership between G and Sam really is. There's a lot of touchy affection and hurt/comfort here; I have a quibble or two with the characterization of Sam as brawn and Callen as brains, but there's enough good stuff here I can play along, and I'm always thrilled to see a new story pop up by Waldo. Be aware this story contains spoilers for episodes 1.5 and 1.9 in particular. ( Sam indicated G with his chin. 'Concussion watch.' )Read the story: Lust, Like, Love. Not Necessarily in that Order. And don't forget to feedback the author. We want more, longer stories!!

Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen Length: ~426 words Author on LJ: smallbeerAuthor Website: Fic on AO3Why this must be read: What sold the show for me is the chemistry between the two leads: G Callen (Chris O'Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J). They're very different in personality, stature, everything. But they get each other. The show built in a long partnership right from the beginning, and we often learn about the characters by how well their partners know them. They say things like "You know I hate needles" and "Your ears wiggle when you try to avoid a conversation. It's kind of adorable." I love this snippet because it could be a scene out of the show - at least the non-kissing part - because they're partners. They know each other so well, they trust deeply, and they don't think anyone can protect the other person as well as they can. And this just leads everyone around them to conclude that, yeah, they're totally married. ( A tiny teaser )Read the story: Adequate Back-UpAnd don't forget to feedback the author.

My recs might be loaded a bit towards the front of the month because we're moving late in June, but I'm hugely pleased to have the opportunity to pass on recs for NCIS:LA! And this one's just been nominated for an award. Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen Length: ~4575 words Author on LJ: glacisAuthor Website: Castle's KeepWhy this must be read: It captures the easy chemistry of the team and reinforces the challenges of undercover work. Callen gives an object lesson on how to sell your undercover assignment. By kissing Kensi. Then Sam. With equal skill and comfort. There's more to the story than that ... the repercussions of the kiss, of course, and a cameo by Sam's fictional wife who is remarkably okay with his feelings for G, but what hits me every time I read it is the absolute trust between Sam and G. These are guys who trust each other with their lives, their fears, their vulnerabilities, and it shows. ( 'Sam, have I ever kissed you?' Callen asked bluntly. )Read the story: PracticeAnd don't forget to feedback the author.

Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen (not explicit) Length: ~3600 words Author on LJ: trillingstarAuthor Website: Fic and Art on LJWhy this must be read: Sometimes a story fools you--you think it's going to be one thing, and then it reveals itself to be something else entirely. "Musicality" is one of those stories. At first glance, it's a bit of insight into the workings of the NCIS: LA crew on the job. Dom's still new, and Sam's guiding him through their undercover gig. But where the story really shines is in its subtlety. It's really about Sam--what he wants, what he needs. How he finds himself through music. It's all that I love best about jazz scenes--getting lost in the music, smoky air and smoky sound, something like longing in every note. Don't overlook this piece--it's a wonderful gem. ( G thinks Sam's nuts for living above a nightclub. Too loud, G said. Too screechy. )Read the story: MusicalityAnd don't forget to feedback the author!

Hey, NCIS fans! I've got permission to include the newest boys on the block this month, the increasingly popular Office of Special Projects from Los Angeles (undercover unit). We don't have a full-fledged NCIS: LA fandom overview (ETA: Now we do! Fandom overview this way), but if you need a primer to check out try gabriellemb's overview of the intro/crossover episodes and the first two eps of the show proper. Also, drlense has done a series of slashcaps for the show, and they're hilarious. We don't call it NCIS: Gay for nothing! (Spoilers abound in the previous two links, however, so reader beware.) Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen Length: ~1950 words Author on LJ: lynnmonster (LJ and at Dreamwidth) Author Website: Fic tag on LJWhy this must be read: This story launches off a scene from an early episode of the show where Sam and G visit a tattoo parlour during the investigation. It's got just the right blend of innuendo and playfulness that the show itself has ... and maybe a little more. *g* Enjoy! ( Things you might need to know )( 'So who are we this time?' Sam asked as they approached the bistro. )Read the story: Semi-Permanent MarkersAnd don't forget to feedback the author!
