Why this must be read:

This last rec is a futurefic – and it's an interesting thing about Danny and Brett that they have the potential to be one of the happiest slash couples out there. Sexual fidelity doesn't seem to be an issue, they get along well and on equal terms, and they have the resources to deal with any outside worries that arise. Unlike cops or soldiers, say, they could afford to be fairly, if discreetly, public about a relationship. There's an implication in "A Death in the Family" (possibly the last episode) that Danny's even moved what may be his last relative over to England, which could mean he intends a permanent residence there – with, obviously, Brett. So, uh, kidfic, anyone?

I know, me neither, but this is really charming. In this cute little story, a slightly older Danny and Brett live together and have acquired a couple toddlers somehow and are still comfortably arguing about everything and nothing. The voices are very good and it's surprisingly full of little touches that fit together to make it work. And there's that summery, open-ended sense that everything really is going to be all right forever.

(The fic comes after a lot of pictures in this post, so it may take a minute to load.) The Next Generation

I've had a great time reccing The Persuaders! for Small Fandoms Month – keep the love alive, Persuaders fans old and new, and remember, life's a holiday. Even if you're not ridiculously stinking rich.

Why this must be read:

I wasn't going to rec another [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic and this messes up the chronological-in-series order thing I was going for, but on second thoughts I just can't resist. This is an episode tag for the pilot, Overture, and it absolutely captures that first casual frenzy of their initial fighting-and-flirting, the POV and voices and visuals just making the whole thing happen under your eyes, and it's got a fun take on Brett's sexuality – a less usual one but which really plays off the combination of what we see on screen and what we were supposed to see (because, really, both characters are supposed to be straight. Right? I think? Probably? Somehow?) (Brett, at least?) It's funny and fun and just, oh, very them and very that particular moment in the series, with Brett's smugness and orange shirt and their mutual cruising. Yay!

28th-Dec-2007 08:36 pm VID REC: The Persuaders! - I Only Want To Be With You
Vidder: Kay
Musical artist: Dusty Springfield
Pairing: Danny Wilde/Lord Brett Sinclair
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] keiko_kirin
Vidder's website: http://pteropus.com/

Why this vid kicks ass:

"You stopped and you smiled at me, asked if I cared to dance; I fell into your open arms and I didn't stand a chance..."

This is the only Persuaders vid I know of that's currently available. How lucky we are that it's such a fun, joyous romp, set to a song reminiscent of the one that accompanies the drag race in the pilot episode. I should warn you that unless you're an anime fan, a lot of the cuts in this may seem too fast. I still have trouble with it and I've watched it, oh, forty times? The temptation to try and cram in as many slashy moments as possible is understandable (there are just so many.) But this vid is more than Inappropriate Fondling's Greatest Hits: it also shows each character through the other's eyes – amused, exasperated Danny following around suave Brett, and then Brett, bemused and unable to resist intrusive, sparkling-eyed Danny. Oh, boys. Oh, vid. Oh, Dusty Springfield. I need to go draw hearts on things now.

I Only Want To Be With You: on imeem or downloadable with password – but getting the password is easy and I strongly recommend downloading so you can watch with proper timing.

27th-Dec-2007 08:00 pm Alfresco by Dorinda (R)
Fandom: THE PERSUADERS!
Pairing: Danny Wilde/Lord Brett Sinclair
Author Website: Dorinda's bare bones page
Why this must be read:

There were several Persuaders fics in the yuletide swap this year – joy! – and it seems like I should control myself and only rec one, so, whatever you do, don't miss Alfresco. It's set after the episode Five Miles to Midnight, which ends with Brett and Danny – at an early, cautiously friendly period in their acquaintance, with less of the sneering and sparring but before the comfortable intimacy – finishing up a rough couple of days by spoiler. ) Between the relief from danger, the stress of their current predicament, and the beautiful Italian countryside, it's a holiday or a disaster in the making... depending on who you ask.

This fic gives a thoughtful, serious take on the characters, with bits of backstory that'll sink into your personal canon immediately, and – no, in the interests of keeping this rec short, instead of raving on in detail I'll just say, imagine you've been handed a bowl of the most delicious, top-quality chocolate mousse to savour spoonful by luscious spoonful, only the more you have, the more you crave. Mmmmm. Now go, read! Read!

Why this must be read:

Bonus rec for the week: I'm sorry to repeat authors, but I couldn't pass this up, because it's so classic to me. It's an episode tag for "Greensleeves" (and will make more sense if you've seen that), which puts it at a sort of middle phase of Danny and Brett's friendship, in which they're already constant companions but still have a lot to discover about each other's lives and pasts. And what about that everpresent flirtatious tension: is it all just a joke or could something happen at any moment?

This first-time fic plays off that dynamic perfectly, and the descriptions and voices are so good it's hard to believe this wasn't really part of the episode. Yummy, funny – yay!

Title: Improper Dancing by Mary Crawford
Pairing: To quote the vidder's summary, "Just don't scare the horses."
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] marycrawford
Author Website: Mary Crawford's Vices
Why this must be watched:

This is a multi-fandom vid rather than a crossover, but I got permission to bend the category here, so! Mary Crawford's vids have a characteristic visual fluidity, a feeling of kinetic energy combined with smooth inevitability that carries you along euphorically to the end. If ONLY the same could be said for Brett's dancing. *cries* No clips of the... disco incident... are included here, though. In fact, there isn't much Persuaders content in this vid, but that's still far more than the usual zero, and the vid is tons of fun in and of itself, combining clips ranging from classic movies to modern TV in one big seamless carnival. Plot? Um... Fandom is a huge crazy pinball machine of sexual energy? People are weird? Being alive is great? I'm sure Danny and Brett would agree.

11th-Dec-2007 08:10 pm Scenes From A Hotel In Prague by SarahMc (PG)
Fandom: THE PERSUADERS!
Pairing: Lord Brett Sinclair/Danny Wilde
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] scarffetish
Why this must be read:

At first glance, these could be slices of life for a comfortably non-monogamous Danny and Brett – but while it's not a first time, it's not exactly established relationship fic either, because the exact nature of their arrangement seems to still be under negotiation, and I suspect only one of them understands why that is.

This well-written fic is fun, frustrating, and entirely believable (except for how I'm not sure a guy who wears a gold-striped muumuu would be so quick to judge another's attire), all of which makes for a memorably hot and funny final scene.

5th-Dec-2007 08:17 pm Strangers' Attraction by Keiko Kirin (R/NC-17)
Fandom: THE PERSUADERS!
Pairing: Lord Brett Sinclair/Danny Wilde
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] keiko_kirin
Author Website: keikotorium
Why this must be read:
One of the great things about The Persuaders! is watching the main duo's relationship develop. How did two proud, independent bachelors come to dismantle the walls they've depended on for decades in favour of a fort for two? In a slash reading, how did they take that first risk? It could have been easy and playful, drunk and disorderly, wild and romantic. Or it could have happened like this: a bit dark, a bit dirty, and a bit too soon.

This episode tag to "Angie, Angie" comes at a time when Danny and Brett's growing rapport is still heavily laced with caution and mutual testing, and further strained by recent events that have left Danny angry and hurt and Brett... fascinated. It's a car crash that heads down a rabbit hole with light at the end of the tunnel, and it's a reading of the characters that's both extremely romantic and convincingly carnal.

2nd-Dec-2007 11:26 pm The Persuaders! Overview
Imagine a cross between The Avengers and The Professionals, starring two bisexual billionaires.

No, that's not canon. I try again.

Champagne. Chandeliers. Discothèques. Aston Martins and Ferraris. Tony Curtis and Roger Moore. Fighting crime for personal redemption -- and kicks, baby. Lazy banter, zingy music, fistfights and car chases. What one reviewer called "the best bad series ever made" and what the official amazon.co.uk description admits "may well be the most blatantly homoerotic of all the buddy television pairings ... that ran over the screen in the 70s." If all that sounds like your thing, it probably is.

The premise: 'You think I'm gonna risk my life... or his?' )
The characters: 'Two olives. That way, you see, they can gently bounce up against each other.' )
The central pairing which is basically also the story arc: 'What are you so worried about me for?' 'Perhaps I'd rather hate you alive than dead?' )
The fic and the fandom: 'I'm telling you, I'm straight. All I'm after is a holiday.' 'Yes, well, it looks like someone wanted to make it permanent.' )
Other resources: 'And the sun shines down on love...' )
