Fandom: POKÉMON Pairing: Gen Length: 6450 words Author Website: FanFiction.Net accountWhy this must be read: I believe that keeping the characterization of an established character while narrating in the first person perspective is very difficult, but Ember A. Keelty really pulls it off in "Ordinary Girls." I remember being floored the first time I read this fic: it's quite powerful, and the twist, open-ended "resolution" of this fic certainly leaves room for interpretation. The best part of this fic has to be the characterization of Mars and Jupiter, though. It's a spot-on depiction of the cult mentality and the way it lingers after the fact. Even when there are a few leaps in the ways that characters like Dawn characterizatized, we can understand how she got there. All in all, this is an impressively written and compelling fic. ( Excerpt: "Do you have a problem with pink?" she asks, taking a chug. )" Ordinary Girls"

Fandom: POKÉMON Pairing: Gold/Silver Length: 11843 words mocha mochawhipAuthor Website: FanFiction.Net accountWhy this must be read: This mangaverse fic is a thrilling read. There's a good deal of intrigue and suspense to complement in this story that complements its romantic arc, and the way Otte takes something that was only hinted at in the manga and develops it into her own plot is really great. I would really recommend reading this; it's a great fic. ( Excerpt: "Get the hell up, Gold!" )" Bullet Proof"

Fandom: POKÉMON Pairing: Gen Length: 5035 words Author on DW: mochamochaAuthor on AO3 & FFnet: mochawhip mochawhip | mochawhipAuthor Website: Fanfic Master ListWhy this must be read: Pokémon gameverse canon is somewhat notorious for being lax in developing its antagonists, but "Teacher, Preacher" develops Team Rocket in spades. The author doesn't hold any punches: each of the characters is depicted in a very harsh light, and their flaws are laid out for you to see. Just when you believe that they couldn't get any more despicable, however, Mocha sneaks up on you and, against all odds, manages to make every single character redeemable, sympathetic, and remarkably whole. All in all, this piece is a very nuanced study of the dynamics between the upper echelons of Team Rocket: the Boss, his Executives, and his young son, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who loves or is interested by Team Rocket, or antagonists in general. ( Excerpt: Four is a clean number, sharp and stable like a square. )" Teacher, Preacher" (can also be read on AO3 and FFnet)

Fandom: POKÉMON Pairing: Gen Length: 2220 words Author on LJ & DW: aztecravemonkey | mercoledimercolediAuthor on FFnet: JX ValentineAuthor Website: Fanfic TagWhy this must be read: One of the things I love most about the Pokémon fandom is that the games can inspire fics like this one. "Retroactive Continuity" acknowledges the idea that there are continuity errors and canon discrepancies within the main series of Pokémon games. These discrepancies are most apparent in that each generation of games usually carries two versions—each of which offers a slight variation on the storyline—but there is also the fact that there were outright remakes of certain generations and characters that are "left out" by them. Instead of ironing out the canon's wrinkles, however, this piece takes the idea and applies it in a very striking—and chilling—manner. Jax touches on these ideas masterfully; her prose is incisive, and not a single word is wasted. Compounded with the edge of psychological horror inherent in the narrative, this fic makes for a very thought-provoking read. All that being said, "Retroactive Continuity" is a really great introduction to how the Pokémon fandom implements game mechanics and meta in creative ways. Fandom: POKÉMON Pairing: Gen Length: 1871 Author on LJ: neutralizeAuthor Website: Fanfic Master ListWhy this must be read: This fic is just too much fun. It features the Kanto gym leaders, who promptly begin discussing their gyms and how they relate to their sex lives. Apart from the laughter-inducing anecdotes from the gym leaders, the advice they give Janine is simply hilarious. Not to mention the conclusion, which is really something else. If you're in the mood for a lighthearted, comical piece, then look no further! ( Excerpt: ”And then what happened?” )" Grapevine"

Fandom: POKÉMON Pairing: Silver/Kotone, Silver/Green, hinted Green/Red Length: 6763 words Author on LJ: kitsuneasikaAuthor on AO3: kitsuneasikaAuthor on FFnet: kitsuneasikaAuthor Website: Fanfic Master List Why this must be read: This piece has so many things to appreciate: a narrative told through letters, travel, rare pairs, pitch perfect characterization. It is definitely one of the most romantic stories I have ever read, and this quality is due in great part to the longing atmosphere and tone that Kitsuneasika develops. Perhaps the strongest aspect of this fic, however, is its exquisite pacing. The relatively slow development builds up the characters exceptionally well, and the culmination of these aspects makes for an intensely satisfying resolution. ( Excerpt: Silver makes an exasperated sound, and unfolds the letter, tearing a blank strip from the last, mostly empty page. )" moments through an hourglass" (can also be read on AO3)

Baticeer's style is simple but breathtakingly insightful, and these qualities lend themselves seamlessly to the narrative. Whether you're more familiar with the games, anime, or manga, the author's depiction of an aging Pikachu and the manner in which he and his trainer learn to accept the inevitable is just heartrending.
