30th-Sep-2013 04:19 pm Never Talk To Strangers, by Princess Destiny (PG-13)

My last rec for this month! I hoped you had fun with my recs. I tried to find a good combination of not so popular stories and fandom favorites. Hopefully, I reached my goal. Maybe I will take a second drive after the end of the second anime and show you some more hidden jewels. Maybe I can also rec some more f/f stories, if you want.

But for now, have fun with my last recommendation.

Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Mamoru Chiba/Usagi Tsukino
Length: 2.700 words
Author on LJ: -
Author Website: FF.net, Destiny's Gateway
Why this must be read:
I was pretty unsure if I should rec this story. The characters (especially Usagi) are pretty ooc in this story but for some reason, I really love the fic. Many people portray Mamoru in AUs as a darker character, which is especially inspired by the manga. Mob!AUs or similar are popular in the UsaMamo part of the fandom and I admit, I love the idea.

This story carry this trope to the extremes and it evens happens in a good way. I love how you can see the love between Usagi and Mamoru even in such a different AU.

Never talks to Strangers
--> Usagi meets a handsome guy in the carpark of the Juuban Mall and offers to drive him to his car, which he seems to have misplaced. She obviously never heard the saying about talking to strangers...

29th-Sep-2013 11:13 am The Ties That Bind, by Firefly-Shy (PG)
Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Senshis/Shitennous with background Mamoru Chiba/Usagi Tsukino
Length: ~ 112.600 words
Author on LJ: -
Author Website: FF.net
Why this must be read:
After my last rec I decide I need to rec something more fluffy and funny. Okay this fic has still angst and drama (and a new enemy which isn't a total ripoff from a canon one!) but it still gives us a happy end.

The story is simply and a popular trope. The Shitennous get reincarnate as humans, meet the Senshis and then they fall in love. Easy, right? Wrong.

The fic shows us that this popular trope isn't easy. How can you love people who killed you (in your past life), then tried to kill you again (in your current life) and at least you killed them. Love is amazing but to overcome such things isn't something you can do without problems. Also how can the Shitennous be reborn if the Senshis fought with them? The author asks these question in this fic and unlike so many other stories with this tope the answers are good and without plot holes which basically destroy canon.

I especially enjoy the differences between the relationships of the Inners and the Generals. Every Senshi/Shitennou relationship is different and every one gives us other answers to the questions I mentioned above.

The Ties That Bind (FF.net)
--> An invisible thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break." The Shitennou find each other and discover there are some bonds stronger than fate.

28th-Sep-2013 10:37 pm Against All Odds, by Dejana Talis (PG-13)
Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Mamoru Chiba/Usagi Tsukino, minor Inner Senshi/Shitennous
Length: ~  216.000 words
Author on LJ: dejana
Author Website: Homepage, FF.net
Why this must be read:
Okay I lied. I need to rec another SilMil story. This fic is simply too good to resist and is also a fandom classic for UsaMamo shippers. Personally I have a love hate relationship with it. It is an amazing story but the end gives me as a huge U/M shipper a really, really bitter aftertaste. But even with this 'problem' I need to rec this fic.

So let's talk about AAO which is a beautiful love story with an old and still new idea. A princess and a poor stable boy meet and fall in love and after that they live happily ever after. That would be the end in a fairytale.

The story shows us that a princess can't marry so easily a man out of the commonalty even if they love each. Together with this huge portion of realism the authr also gives us amazing and interesting backgrounds for all characters. We see more about Serenity and Endymion but we also learn more about the Queen, Luna and Artemis and naturally also the Inner Senshis. For me especially important is that these characters aren't perfect. We see how they make mistakes and how they regret them or how they will never see them as mistakes. They love, fight, hate and are normal people instead these perfect dolls some SM authors use.

So take your time and enjoy this wonderful story but prepare and decide yourself if you choose the happily ever after or if you will read the 'real' end which shows us that fairytales are only... fairytales. In reality happily ever afters don't exist and the authors shows this in a really bittersweet epilogue.

Against All Odds (FF.net, Homepage)
--> A twist of fate casts Endymion as a stable boy working for the Moon Castle, where he meets the Princess by chance. With Serenity engaged to another man, can the miracle romance triumph over the barriers of class and nobility?

28th-Sep-2013 02:43 pm Normal Enough, by wickedtrue (PG-13)
Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Minako Aino (Sailor Venus)/Kunzite
Length: ~ 6.600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wickedtrue
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
As a child I always hoped that the manga give us a scene between the Inner Senshis and the (soul) stones of the Shitennou. How would you react if you meet your former lover who got brainwash, tried to kill you and then you need to kill him only to meet his soul again. A soul who still remembers your shared love. How can you react? Or really understand such a situation?

I really want to see such a scene but sadly this never happened. Fortunately we have fanfiction for such a thing.

This story is the first part of a (WIP) series in which the Senshis meet their old lovers. It is more grown-up than other fics. It includes hate, love, sex and realism. It shows that love is something beautiful but also something which can hurt and destroy you.

In this story we see more of the relationship between Venus and Kunzite and everything happens through the eyes of Mamoru. Normally Mamoru and Minako don't interact much and I often thought that they don't like each other. Respect sure but nothing more. So it is interesting to see how Mamoru reacts to her and what his thoughts are about the relationships between his generals and the Inner Senshis.

The next part is still a WIP and written in Venus POV. Through her eyes we also see many flashbacks to the Silver Millenium.

Normal Enough (Ao3)
--> "...do you think that's odd, even for Mina-chan?" Usagi asked him. "Do you think we should worry?" Mamoru countered. Neither was quite sure.

Why this must be viewed:
There are many amazing videos for Sailor Moon but I think this is THE Sailor Moon AMV. The video has over 1.6 million clicks and it deserves all these. The music fits perfect to Sailor Moon characters and the end of the anime. The video clips don't have the best quality but it is still one of the best SM videos.

Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Mamoru Chiba/Usagi Tsukino
Length: ~  1.300 words
Author on LJ: -
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
Another reincarnation AU. Really short but one of my favorites because it gives us fem!Mamoru. Serenity and Endymion loved each. But what will happen if there are both reborn as women? Especially if homosexuality is still not accept?

The story shows heartbreaking scenes with only few sentences but also the pure love between UsaMamo with few words. I love especially the hints to canon!Sailor Moon.

Endless (Ao3)
--> Tsukino Usagi's life is not the first time she is born in the thousand years since the Silver Millennium. The souls of Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion dance around each other for centuries before they become warriors against evil. They have countless stories between them, leading up to their true rebirth.

This is one of those stories.

Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Gen with background Mamoru Chiba/Usagi Tsukino
Length: ~ 15.200 words
Author on LJ: dejana
Author Website: Homepage, FF.net
Why this must be read:
Chibiusa was another character which got many hateful comments in the 90s. Maybe the dub made her into a horrible brat or maybe young teens simply don't want to like a child who disturbs romantic moments between their OTP. I don't know but personally I love her. In the manga she is a child who lives through horrible things and in the end she becomes stronger and fiercer and simply badass. So I openly admit that I can't imagine a Sailor Moon world without Chibiusa. Nobody else could be Mamorus and Serenitys child. Who else could fit into her footsteps?

This question finds an answer in this story. Instead to give birth to Chibiusa Serenity gives birth to another child. A sweet little girl that soon learns that she isn't enough. That she always will live in the shadows of a girl/woman who was never born. How can you live such a life?

So, yes, I will rec a Sailor Moon fic with heartbreak, depression and the hurtful realization that Serenity and co. aren't perfect. We see everything through the eyes of the unwanted child. We see how she wants to love her parents and the other Senshis but we also see how 'her family' destroy this love because they can't forget one of so many possible futures that they saw during their time as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask.

The end seems to give the OC a happy end but personally it left me with a bittersweet feeling and the question if the OC could really love her family again after such a childhood. For this the story definitely deserves to be recced!

Misconception (FF.net, Homepage)
--> Born of a queen and king who loved their daughter long before she was concieved, I live my life in the shadow of a child who never existed, who was destroyed by my creation. Will they ever love me as they loved Small Lady?

Sorry I took a short holiday trip but now I'm back. :) (Also I definitly should find someone who can beta my recs...)

Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Mamoru Chiba/Usagi Tsukino
Length: ~  7.800 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fated_addiction
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:

Together with [livejournal.com profile] tosca1390 [livejournal.com profile] fated_addiction is for me one of the best LJ authors in the Sailor Moon fandom. Both have a beautiful writing style and a perfect grasp of the characters. So I can only say read every story written by them. It is worth it.

In this story by fated we see a slightly different Season 1. Sailor Venus says she is the Moon Princess and so she is also Mamorus/Tuxedo Masks true love. Usagi needs to accept this. Some truths are unavoidable right?

Fated doesn't give us the cliché Usagi who only cares about food. Instead of that she gives us a teenager who sees and feels more than the others. This Usagi knows what she feels but she also knows her role as Sailor Moon and as the protector of the princess. But there are still so many questions in her mind and the discovery of the princess doesn't give her answers. Instead of that she only gets more questions.

Maybe you don't understand why I mention this different kind of characterization for Usagi but believe me this is new. In the 90s there was a huge group of people who hate Usagi and often misinterpret her character. She was nothing more than a dumb and lazy girl who only cares about food and her boyfriend. So a realistic look into Usagis character and her feelings for Mamoru and her Inner Scouts is definitly something new and worth a rec.

Together with this amazing portrayal of Usagi we also see a new, different side of the relationship between Usagi and Minako. They need to trust each other but in the real nothing is so easy.

These new interpretations of Usagi and the relationship between Minako/Usagi/Mamoru is basically the reason for my recommendation. I really hope more people will start to write such an Usagi.

Let's leave men to their gods (LJ)
--> They say that they have been walking up to this particular moment. They talk too much about memories when the truth still remains there and with her.

Sequel: The half-written fairytale (LJ)
--> It's as simple as this: she begins where he ends and she ends where he begins. But she is the only one that can undo the knots. (PG)

19th-Sep-2013 08:07 am Drown on dry land, by lesbiaaans (G)
Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Kaiou Michiru/Tenoh Haruka
Length: ~ 9.700 words
Author on LJ: -
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
The TV series shows us how Haruka became Sailor Uranus, but what about Michiru? She's the first one. How did she become a Sailor Senshi and how did it change her life?

This fic answers this question but mostly it also gives us a look into Michiru's thoughts and feelings. She is almost fourteen and different than her classmates. In their eyes, she's perfect, but in her mind, she's dirty and wrong. Instead of being interested in boys, she thinks women are so much more interesting and beautiful. But this is only the beginning on her way to accept that she's different.

I'm not a huge fan of the Outer Senshi but this fic is simply beautiful. The author describes Michirus self-hate heartbreaking and makes it the first step to form Michiru into the person that's prepared to sacrifice herself. With every new burden, Michiru becomes the Senshi who is too old for her age.

Also, even if this is more a character centric work, Haruka plays an important role for Michiru and in this fic. Uranus and Neptune are only two of the Outer Senshi, but because of the roles of Saturn and Pluto, these two mostly work together and manage to develop their own dynamic. This story shows us the first steps into the relationship so many people love.

Drown on dry land (Ao3)

18th-Sep-2013 04:57 pm Tryst, by Ni-chan (R)
Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Mamoru Chiba/Usagi Tsukino, minor Senshis/Shitennous with focus on Kunzite/Venus
Length: ~ 62.000 words
Author on LJ: -
Author Website: FF.net
Why this must be read:
In the SM fandom you will find mostly four types of fic. Total AUs, fics which play in the future time line of SM (especially popular for stories with Chibiusa), the 'normal' timeline in Tokyo and pre-canon stories in the Silver Millennium. Personally I have a huge weakness for the last one. How did Serenity and Endymion meet? How did they fall in love? Which problems tried to destroy their love apart from Beryl? These and similar questions are important for this last genre and I must admit many fics give us the same answers.

Still I love these stories because sometimes you're lucky and find a story with a new twist. I thought a long time about my choice for this trope. There are many amazing stories but my favorites are written by authors I already recced or will rec. So I decided to rec a story which isn't so perfect and not so popular.

Instead of writing a canon-based story for the SilMil, the author only uses basic canon information and puts them into a new world with many new and old characters. The romance between Serenity and Endymion is wonderful because it isn't the popular love at first sight. No, similar to the canon love between Mamoru and Usagi they both need more time to accept the other one. Also, we finally see a Serenity which isn't a sweet and innocent little girl.

I admit there are some negative points. The end is a little bit rushed, the author seems to forget Serenity's mother and I'm not really happy with the choice of the bad guy but in the end, I can ignore this. This description of Serenity and Endymion's love story deserves a rec. Also, the author thinks about rewriting the story so maybe there will be a rewrite without these negative points.

Tryst (FF.net)
--> When an overzealous suitor threatens Serenity's safety, her father has no choice but to send her to the one place no one would ever think to look: Earth. But no one expects what happens when she meets Endymion or the reprecussions of it all.

Fandom: Sailor Moon/Doctor Who (Classic and New)
Pairing: Gen
Length: ~  1.300 words
Author on LJ: sailorptah
Author Website:
Ao3
Why this must be read:
I'm part of both fandoms and naturally I couldn't resist this fic. The idea that Pluto meets The Doctor is simple but also amazing. She's the guardian of the Door of Space-Time and the Doctor travels through Time. So it's only natural that they meet somehow.

This story is short but every new paragraph shows the difference between the various incarnations of The Doctor. Especially if you know The Doctor 1 till 10, it's a fun way to see if you catch clues from canon moments in Doctor Who.

Also, similar to Doctor Who you need to read/see everything before some things stand a reason, but in the end you can only think how good everything fits together.

Ten Times The Doctor Met Sailor Pluto (Plus One More) (Ao3)
--> Sailor Pluto meets Doctors One through Ten. (Not necessarily in that order.)

Pairing: Mamoru Chiba/Usagi Tsukino
Length: ~  3.800 words
Author on LJ: tosca1390
Author Website: Ao3
Why this must be read:
If I could I would rec every story by this author. She has an amazing way with words and a perfect grasp of the characters. I thought for long time about which story I would rec. Her amazing modern political AU? Her characterization of the Mamoru/Chibi-Usa/Usagi relationship? Or her Silver Millenium AU with my favorite trope? All her stories are very popular but in the end I decided to choose this story. It's short and not so well-know but I love it.

Tosca shows us a world in which Serenity and Endymion had various lives in which they met and didn't find their happy end. The story shows us moments in times in which we see that love is wonderful but sometimes everything works against it. For this the author chose various periods of time but I must admit my favorite is the Puritan Massachusetts. It simply fits to Usagis/Serenitys character and I wished I could read more about Usagis/Mamorus love during this time.

The looks into the different lives of Endymion and Serenity are short but every new part gives us a different aspect of their love. Solely for this the story deserves all my love and this rec.

Outsider-POV is one of my biggest weaknesses. In this oneshot we see Usagis and Mamorus relationship through the eyes of Mamorus' colleague. He asks the same question like so many people before. How can Mamoru and Usagi love each other if they're so different? The answer is simple and easy and the fic is the same. It is a fluffy story to forget the drama of the RL.

9th-Sep-2013 10:13 am Fandom Overview: Sailor Moon
Hello,

I'm Lilly and this month I'll drive the anime/manga van. English isn't my mother tongue but I hope it isn't too bad. :)

So let's start the van and hopefully I can persuade you to give my favorite manga/anime a chance.

Fandom Overview for "Sailor Moon"

In the name of the moon I will punish you!

This is one of the catchphrases of one of the most popular animes/mangas in the world. In the year 1991 Kodansha published the first chapter of a shojo manga called 'Sailor Moon' written by Naoko Takeuchi. This was not only the start of an overwhelming franchise but also the beginning of the Magical Girl boom.

18 manga volumes (12 in the reprint), an anime with 200 episodes (and soon there will be a new one!), a live-action TV series with 49 episodes and two specials, 29 musicals, more than 20 videogames and many merchandise articles later the story of Sailor Moon and her friends still has a huge fan base.

But what is so special about it?

Maybe this (really long) overview will help to answer this question.

Fandom: SAILOR MOOM
Pairing: Serena/Darien, Scouts/Generals
Length: long
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] venusorbit1

Why this must be read:

I'm a sucker for fics that pair the Inner Scouts with the Generals. VO1 gives us a great story that has all the scouts and generals and Serena and Darien as well. The scouts and Darien go to collede in the states....where they meet 4 guys who look like Beryl's Generals. Except that they are 4 college attending guys, not evil Negaverse generals. This is a great story filled with humor as friendships and relationships are formed while attending classes, doing collegy things, and fighting evil. Her characterization of all the characters is great, especially Darien who has real male friends (other then Andrew) for the first time in his life.

Hi everyone, I'm [livejournal.com profile] horseriderjen and I'll be you driver for the Sailor Moon van. Sailor Moon was the fandom that got me into fanfiction and it is still one of my favorites. For a quick brush up on the awesome series. Sit back, buckle your belts, and enjoy the ride!

Fandom: Sailor Moon
Pairing: Usagi/Mamoru
Length: long
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Aimee's fic on Sailormoon Fiction
Why this must be read:

Aimee is one of the classic writer's in the fandom. And this story is the one that keeps drawing me back into the fandom. A common theme in season 1 fic is that Usagi is in love with Tuxedo Mask and Mamoru at the same time - not knowing that they are the same person. In so many stories Usagi finds out who Mask is, and is automatically ok with it. Aimee gives us a beautiful more realistic story where our superheros are not perfect, they are flawed and make mistakes, but still can have a happy ending. If you've never read a Sailor Moon fic before, this is the one to start with.
