Sad to say this will be my last crack van rec ever. It's been a great run, and thank you for your patience with me. Thank you also to the mods for running this comm these last ten years. It will be missed. Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Al/Beth, Sam/Donna Length: 7,600 Author on LJ: azarsuerteAuthor Website: Worlds to WanderWhy this must be read:As I've mentioned before, we've all had a think about what happened after Mirror Image, this of all things is my absolute favourite take. It perfectly underlines everything I loved about the show, and that the canon ending left unsaid. It's a beautiful look at the friendship between Al and Sam, and hope at the end of all things. Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Gen Length: 38,000 Author on LJ: lightbird777Author Website: Author on AO3Why this must be read:Probably every QL writer out there has at least thought about a post-series fic. Many end in hugging and happily every after, but some examine what might occur as a result of the shifts and turns in the timeline since Sam started leaping. This is one of those, and it's a bit of a bumpy ride, but worth it for the look at possible futures it lends. The series comes to no conclusion, but feels complete for all that. There's still adventures out there for Sam, Al, Beth and all the other characters. The Long Way Home Series

Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam/Al, mentions Al/Tina and Tina/Gushie Length: 1,600 Author on LJ: gardendoorAuthor Website: AO3 ProfileWhy this must be read:I wouldn't want to ruin it, but I really like how this fic, summarised as "Al is bribed into selling classified files." fills in a corner of the universe that I've always wondered about. Now that the author's set it up, I really like the idea. Headcannon accepted. Every Man Has a Price

Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam/Al, Al/OMC Length: 11,000 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Author's AO3 PageWhy this must be read:On a scale where 1 is like reading an economics text and 10 is watching the Starsky & Hutch episode "The Fix," this fic is an 11, and I love it so. It's in the fine tradition of Sam leaping into one of Al's lovers, and while it could use more porn, and totally ignores Al's canonical homophobia (another fine tradition), it's really very sweet. It's also angsty, OMG! Sam's bent for self-sacrifice comes to the fore, along with the canonical bleed over from leapees, all blending into the perfect blend of h and c in, The Gift

Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam and Al Length: 4,000 Author on LJ: Author has regrettably passed away. Author Website: Confessions of a Fannish ButterflyWhy this must be read:As you're probably figured out by now, I'm extremely fond of h/c gen, and this one has the best of Al helping Sam cope with dire situations. The fic is short and sweet, and manages to hit all the right character notes for episodic gen. Plus is pretty scary in places, especially if you're afraid of water. Thinking Inside the Box

Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam/Al, Sam/OC Length: 5,000 Author on LJ: grey_swAuthor Website: Author on AO3Why this must be read:I'm extremely fond of fic wherein Sam just gets so damn lonely that he breaks his usual rules and sleeps with someone on a leap. I'm especially fond of it when he's gay. Which is this story. This story also includes mutual pining, which is nice too. Mostly it's about how Sam's life is Never Fair

Title: Remember Me This Way by Azar Pairing: Jack/Sara (Sam/Sara, kinda sorta, background Al/Beth) Length: 4,800 Author on LJ: azarsuerteAuthor Website: Worlds to WanderWhy this must be read:I wasn't going to do crossover day, but then I remembered all the QL crossovers I love (several of which have already been recced here), and I caved. This is another fic by Azar (really just read all her stuff), and it's everything I want in a QL crossover. Which is this: Sam goes in, makes a genuine connection with the universe, where everyone's in character, helps something there, but doesn't have a smug authorial-sounding voice about how he knows what's better for everyone and the canon. Here he touches Jack and Sara's lives at a crucial point, and it matters, but in the end, well, you'll see in... Remember Me This Way

Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam/Al, mentions Al/Tina and Tina/Gushie Length: 8,000 Author on LJ: gardendoorAuthor Website: AO3 ProfileWhy this must be read:I thought to myself, "I should rec something fluffy after that last one," but then I thought, "No, really what I need to post is MORE ANGST." Here is the finest, and the angstiest iteration of Sam Leaps Into Someone in the Project fic I've ever found. It doesn't pull a lot of punches in terms of Al's personality, or what he's like to work with, but does manage to be sympathetic and a little optimistic. It is also a nice look at Sam's daughter, Sammy Jo, and has some really sweet h/c. Also ANGST. Shade in Hell

Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam and Al Length: 24k Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: AJ's Fan Fiction LibraryWhy this must be read:QL's Virtual Season ( found here) varies in quality, but tends to good, solid gen with a bit of background Sam/Donna and Al/Beth. I especially like this two-part "episode" which builds on the fact that Trudy Calavicci's death occured the year Sam was born, and was therefore fair game for putting right. I've seen Sam Saves Trudy a couple of times, but this is my favourite, and it's a topic that perfectly suits episode-style gen. If you like this story, check out the rest of the virtual seasons, or at least the rest of AJ's episodes. Also, fasten your seat belts, because there's hell of a bumpy emotional ride in, I'll Be Home For Christmas, Part 1 & I'll Be Home For Christmas, Part 2

Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam & Al Length: 15,000 Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: FF.net pageWhy this must be read:H/C gen is what makes this fandom go 'round, I swear. This one has all the things I like about the genre: casefic, Al worrying about Sam, Sam feeling comforted by that, something going wrong with the leap, Al worrying more, and something totally random and awesome happening at the end. Please ignore the author's ff.net styling, the story is worth it, I promise. Somewhere Beyond the Sea

Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Sam/Al Length: 9,000 Author on LJ: m_j_Author Website: AO3 AccountWhy this must be read:Before the angst of separation and not being able to touch, was a period where Sam and Al worked together on Project Starbright, then worked to raise funds and build Project Quantum Leap. This fic takes place then, and it's hilarious. The dialogue is also bang on in character, and a lot of fun. Al tells one white lie to get Sam out of a bind, and it all goes down hill from there. Hi, my name is Muccamukk, and I'll be driving the van for Quantum Leap this month. Since I'm the first QL driver, I hope to give a good representation of the fandom, though I must admit to tending towards Sam/Al and Sam&Al. However, before I get into the angsty Sam/Al goodness, have some angsty Al/Beth goodness!Fandom: QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Al/Beth Length: 4,600 Author on LJ: azarsuerteAuthor Website: Worlds to WanderWhy this must be read:The end of the series says that Sam fixed Al and Beth's relationship by telling her to wait, and he did, but consider how difficult it would have been to wait for another six years, with no real evidence but a stranger's word. This is Beth's story from the last scene in "Mirror Image" though Al's repatriation. I love all of Azar's fic, but think this is an especially nice example, especially in terms of characterisation and structure. We really get a feel for the passing of the years, little bits of hope here and there, and a nice call back to the Vietnam episode. There's also a follow up ficlet, Never Fully Repay, which deals with what would happen further down the road for these two, and Sam as well. Hold On

Quantum Leap was a science fiction tv series that ran from 1989 to 1993, or roughly five seasons (I say roughly because the first season was very short and the fifth season was very strange). It followed the adventures of Doctor Samuel Beckett (no relation) as he travelled through time, and his best friend Admiral Albert Calavicci who could communicate from the future in the form of a hologram. Together they solved crime, and fought evil, and were instrumental to Buddy Holly writing "Peggy Sue," for which we are all grateful. ( Oh Boy... )

Fandom: HIGHLANDER/QUANTUM LEAP Pairings: none Length: 3603 words Author on LJ: teresa_c posts more frequently on Dream Width as dragonfly Author Website: stories archived at Highlander FictionWhen Duncan MacLeod is in the depth of despair, Sam leaps into the Highlander's kinsman to help prevent his death and world catastrophe. This well written story has been expanded from one written for Lyric Wheel. ("Hurt" by 9"Nails) This crossover works very nicely for both fandoms, since the voices of all characters are true. Title: A Novel Solution by Azar Pairing: none Author on LJ: azarsuerte Author's Website: Probable Impossibilities Why this must be read: Because there are just so *many* things that Sam could fix in the TS universe. Wouldn’t you want to read how? (g)
A TS/Quantum Leap cross has never been recced here before, which is a shame because there are several that are just terrific. With all the fantastical stuff that happens in Sentinel canon, string theory should fit right in! Because Azar writes in multiple fandoms, I found her knowledge of the two shows was a real plus. The characters from both universes get their due, plus the interactions between all the characters made for an agreeable read. Having the Sentinel “regulars” seen through Sam’s POV while he’s trying to figure out their dynamics added to the enjoyment. There are several references to QL episodes, but if you know the gist of the show it shouldn’t detract from your understanding. Just sit back and enjoy both sets of characters and watch as Sam and Al interfere for the good.
A Novel Solution
And don’t forget that in any universe authors love to hear from you!

Title: The Chosen One by Sohna Pairing: Gen; Anakin/Padmé Length: 33,000 words Author on LJ: Unknown Author Websites: Sohna's FFN Profile; KingdomsPressWhy this must be read:Star Wars crossovers are few and far between, and good ones are even rarer. This one is particularly well-written. Sam Beckett, against all possibility, leaps into the body of Anakin Skywalker shortly after the start of Revenge of the Sith. He is bewildered as to how he apparently leaped far into the future, or as Al tells him, far into the past. He also does not know about the Force, and is completely lost. Anakin, needless to say, does not react well to being taken from his life, especially just after he has a nightmare of his pregnant wife dying in childbirth. Eventually Al convinces him to assist Sam in his mission, and things begin to get really interesting. What follows is a well-told tale of how Sam attempts to stop Anakin's fall to the Dark Side. The characterizations are all excellent, and the writing is top notch. Many feel that the fic ends somewhat abruptly, but it does finish the story. The alert reader can easily fill in the details left untold. I also recommend all of Sohna's other SW fics. All are likewise excellent. * * * ( Excerpt )The Chosen One

Title: Partners by Beth H. Pairing: none Length: long Author on LJ: not known Author Website: HEREWhy this must be read: It's a story about two completely different kinds of partnership. Starsky is dead and Hutch has a new partner – it's Sam. And Sam, slowly unraveling the mystery of his predecessor's death and simultaneously trying to understand what his mission is, must deal with Al's incomprehensible issues concerning the case as well as with Ziggy's inaccuracy. All Sam knows is that he has just three days – three days until Hutch commits suicide. Please don't jump into conclusions after the second sentence in this rec."You must have known," Sam said, after a pause, and seeking perhaps an answer himself, "You must have known that one or both of you could die..."
"Yes," Hutch agreed,"we knew; we never talked about it. The risks were part of the friendship--maybe they were part of the reason it grew so deep." He hesitated, then admitted with difficulty, "There were times when I thought maybe we'd be better off not caring so much. More than once he almost died--and God that scared me. And I know it scared him, too, when I was in danger. I would have spared him that, if I could."
Hutch was staring into the distance again, his face settling into desolate planes. "Then it happened, and I wasn't there when he needed me...."
"It wasn't your fault," Sam said weakly, knowing it wouldn't help.
Hutch shook his head. "It's not so much a question of fault," he explained. "It's simply the fact that I wasn't there. That, and the helplessness--I never felt so helpless. All those times before, when he was in danger, there was always something I could do. Even if it seemed like nothing at the time. What I can't forget now is what I felt when I saw that building blow up...and when I couldn't find him, after." Hutch was staring at a vision only he could see, and Sam prayed he'd never see it himself--or Al. Partners IPartners IIPartners IIIPartners IV

Vidder: Lim Musical artist: Regina Spektor Pairing: None Vidder on LJ: limVidder's website: some vids by limWhy this vid kicks ass: When it was released, this songvid ate fandom. It's easy to see why: it's an anthem to fangirls and the way they love and invest in stories and pictures and characters -- all the things I've tried to encapsulate in this rec set. Saying anything else about "Us" would be hype for the sake of it; this vid speaks for itself. Title: Circles by Anne Huff Pairing: Robert/Control Author on LJ: n/a Author Website: Blast FurnaceWhy this must be read: Circles is a dark and angsty crossover piece that delves into the character of Control as well as examining his and Robert’s relationship. Sam leaps into Control to fix something that happened 5 months previous to his arrival. I liked this fic because for once we’re not seeing things from Robert’s perspective and instead get some insight into Control’s thoughts and life. Circles

Fandom: HIGHLANDER/QUANTUM LEAP Pairing: Duncan/Methos, Sam/Al Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Unknown Why this must be read:I've been waiting for Crossover day, I had my fic all picked out. Then when the 15th finally comes I space out and almost forget. If I hadn't seen all the other's posted I would have forgotten entirely. It's just a teensy bit late. Sorry, sorry, sorry. In this fic Sam leaps into the body of Duncan MacLeod. The main thing I like about this fic is how quickly Methos figures out that something is wrong. That this person may look like Duncan, but clearly isn't. There's no Methos wanting to fool around with this "new person" in Duncan's body. All Methos wants is to know what in the hell is going on and where his lover is. There is a real sense of how connected Duncan and Methos are in this story, of just how much they love one another. Loving both of these shows doesn't hurt anything either. I think both fandoms work well for this crossover and all the characters come out as very true to who they are. All this combined makes this one of my favorite crossovers. Adam's Rib

Title: “Angel Unaware” by Legion Pairing: Holmes/Watson, Sam/Al; het references Author on LJ: unknown; e-mail is Legionsfx@aol.com Author Website: Legion’s Hidey HoleWhy this must be read:( Excerpt )An altruistic American suffering from amnesia turns to Holmes and Watson for help; an ocean and decades away, the client’s closest friend prays for a way to bridge the gulf separating them. Readers unfamiliar with Quantum Leap will have no trouble following the story, since the author smoothly incorporates the necessary details of the TV show, while QL fans will probably share my pleasure over finding a happy postscript to the infuriating and heartbreaking series finale. As for Holmes and Watson, although they never possess the full facts of the case they are more than satisfied by its resolution. “Angel Unaware”[Note: the version archived at the author’s site has some wonky formatting, so I’m linking to the Quantum Leap Slash Archive mirror site instead.]

(Okay, so I know it's not technically the fifteenth anymore, but I had to work closing shift tonight, so...) Title: The WitnessAuthor: Michele Martin Author on LJ: no Author Website: none Why this must be read:This oldie-but-goodie is one of my favorite stories from *waaaaaaay* back, and that's because it accomplishes something nearly impossible: it's a crossover of *five* different shows that does just about equal justice to all five. (Plus there are sneaky little cameos by others as well. *g*) Other things I love about it is that you don't have to know all the shows to enjoy it--I'd seen maybe two episodes of The X-Files the first time I read it--and every now and then it has a quirky little moment of self-awareness that reminds you that you're reading a story without actually jarring you *out* of the story. And that undercurrent of self-awareness and just plain *fun* carries you through some rather implausible plot twists because there's the distinct sense that the author knows they're implausible but is enjoying herself so much that you just can't help but follow suit. Is it the best crossover ever written? Probably not. But it sure is the most fun I've ever had reading one, and as I'm a die-hard crossover addict, that says a lot. *g*
