Fandom: HIKARU NO GO Pairing: Shindou/Touya Length: one-shot Author on LJ: bookshopAuthor Website: notquiteroyal.netWhy this must be read:WHAT. WHAT. I could have sworn this fic had been recced here before, and when I realized it wasn't (after checking like seven times), knew it was a state of affairs that had to be rectified! Even though I still have to find a person in this fandom who hasn't read this and loved it. This is a fic that is absolutely my number one favourite fic in all Hikago fandom, ever. It's one of the first ones I read and after that I've periodically gone back to re-read - and it's just as wonderful then as it was the first time I read it. I could have recced any other fic by this author as well, but this one has a special place in my heart ♥ This, this is how Hikaru and Touya are, and why they make me glow with love for them, and why their eternal rivalry pwns all my other OTPs. ( Plus, it's hilarious! )A Whole New Apocalypse* This is my last rec here this month, so thank you all who took an interest! I hope there were some fics you liked :)

Fandom: HIKARU NO GO Pairing: Waya/Akira Length: one-shot Author on LJ: jainAuthor Website: La PasticherieWhy this must be read:This is an absolutely amazing and, first of all, believable fic about how a relationship between Waya and Touya might work out! I love it especially because the special relationship between Touya and Shindou is not ignored - it's still there, even though it's a little different (for one, I didn't feel the need to ship them at all in this fic, just because I was so happy with Waya/Touya...) than in most fics. This fic made me a fan of the author - it was like a dream come true to me ♥ ( excerpt )Unexpected Developments

Fandom: HIKARU NO GO Pairing: None Length: one-shot Author on LJ: flonnebonneAuthor Website: ff.net or fic tagWhy this must be read:It actually amazes me that this author hasn't been recced here before! This is an amazing fic about the cranky old Kuwabara Honinbou's last day alive, and his voice shines fantastically through in this. Despite the theme, this fic just makes me smile in delight at Ogata, Oka, and the rest of the supporting cast! It's truly a unique piece of brilliance. ♥ ( excerpt )Kuwabara is Dead (Long Live the Honinbou)

Fandom: HIKARU NO GO Pairing: None Length: one-shot Author on LJ: runicloreAuthor Website: See the lj, or ff.netWhy this must be read:I want to rec this short fic because it's one of the rare fics that deal with Sai being a ghost and what it is like, and also because it makes me want to cry for Sai ;____; This is a very touching and melancholic fic, and the interaction between Sai and Hikaru is simply lovely! I love how the fic captures how out of place Sai feels in modern Japan, how some things still haunt him, and how important go is to him. ( excerpt )Beneath This Silver Moon

Title: Hikaru the Vampire Slayer by Doumeki Pairing: Subtext-y Akira/Hikaru Length: one-shot Author on LJ: doumekiAuthor Website: Fic tagWhy this must be read:Oh, another author who so deserves to be recced! I chose this one because it's a crossover with Hikaru no Go and Buffy the Vampire Slayer - I know, not the ones you'd first think of mixing! Even if you have seen just a few episodes of Buffy (like I) you'll be able to enjoy this fic for its humour. Hikaru is the Slayer, Akira is a vampire, and... you'll just have to find out the rest of the cast yourself! ( excerpt )Hikaru the Vampire Slayer. There's also a sequel, which is equally hilarious.

Fandom: HIKARU NO GO Pairing: Saeki/Ashiwara Length: 4300 words Author on LJ: crawfords_loverAuthor Website: Fic index and yes, you should check their other (Hikago) fics out too. Why this must be read:I always love Saeki/Ashiwara, and this fic captures their relationship oh-so-well (even though it's practically preslash). There's Morishita-sensei, who makes Saeki stalk Ashiwara so he'll be more focused in his (one-sided?) rivalry. And then it gets really sweet (because of Ashiwara) yet staying snarky and dorky (because of Saeki). All the characters (and there are lots, considering the length of this fic) are spot-on. I can sincerely say that this fic makes me happy. ( excerpt )More Than Meets the Eye

Fandom: HIKARU NO GO Pairing: Isumi/Le Ping Length: 7 chapters/~28,000 words Author on LJ: aiwritingfic and chaineddoveAuthor Website: apples_for_me and hereWhy this must be read:I know, I know, the pairing is probably making you go WTF. However, such is my confidence for these two authors that I know if you just give this fic a try, by the end of it you will believe in this pairing, too. When this fic was still a WIP, seeing an update made me squee, and every chapter made me laugh aloud. Two things that I have to mention as outstanding in this fic are the cameo appearances (the authors truly have a gift for fleshing out minor characters) and the setting which feels so authentic (and not like Japan as told by a random fangirl). Hi guys! I'll be reccing fics in the anime/manga fandom of Hikaru no Go (the crack_van overview is here) this month! I'm going to try to rec some more recent fics, in case there're lurkers who used to be in this fandom but have now lost touch with it, as well as some less-known, but not less brilliant, fics. Fandom: HIKARU NO GO Pairing: Shindou/Touya Length: 10k Author on LJ: arboretumAuthor Website: here Why this must be read:I'm reccing this one first because currently, it's my favourite Hikago fic! It was written for blind_go challenge this May. When I see this fic bookmarked by 50 people on del.icio.us, I can't believe my eyes - because I can't believe there are that many people in the relatively small Hikago fandom even using del.ici.ous. For me, this is a fic with everything I could ever hope for in a Shindou/Touya fic (there's go, there's my OTP, there's fun to be had). It's too amazing for me to have words to describe it. I have read it three times now, and it continues to fill me with joy that fics like this exist. Even if you don't read any of the other fics I'm going to rec this month? You should totally give this a shot! ( excerpt that I spent way too long trying to pick )There's also a short sequel here. A Resolution of Territory

Fandom: HIKARU NO GO Pairing: Shindou/Touya Author on LJ: thehoydenAuthor Website: None, but you can find more in her memories. Why this fic must be read:Because it's the Hoyden, and it's sweet without being saccharine. It leaves with you a warm feeling of "Yes. Like that." ( Small excerpt )Two Hands (But Not of Go)

Fandom: Hikago Pairing: Shindou/Touya Author on LJ: issen4Author website: n/a Why this must be read: Someone claiming to be NetGo's legendary sai shows up - but Shindou knows he can't be... can he? Fandom: Hikaru no Go Pairing: none Author on LJ: aishuuAuthor Website: Quill OfferingsWhy this must be read: It's not completely rare to find fiction from the point of view of an 'outsider' as regards to go. It probably stands to reason, as the players' obsession is often something to wonder at. There are some very well done pieces along these lines, often from the point of view of family, which makes sense as they would usually be expected to have other forms of connection, though given the circumstances go often enough ends up being the means of insight in some form or another. That's not completely applicable in this case; The Stars All Seem to Weep centers around a family member, Hikaru's grandfather, but instead makes the connection from within the game and presents an interesting example of the past connecting to the future, a key note of the series. Fandom: Hikaru no Go Pairing: Ashiwara/Ogata, Ogata/OFCs, Ashiwara/Saeki Author on LJ: lynnmonsterAuthor Website: unknown Why this must be read: Ashiwara might be cheerful, but he's not a pushover. A fun and well done twist on the usual depiction of Ogata the player. Breaking A Few Eggs

Fandom: Hikago Pairing: Shindou/Touya Author on LJ: starlighterAuthor Website: Hamayaki.netWaya POV, Hikaru and others arriving at Morishita's study group - a slice-of-life work with a Shindou/Touya slant. This is a rather short piece, written in 15 minutes for temps_mort, but it was one of the first things I thought of (though I suppose, given the title, it's slightly ironic that it stuck in my head all this time). Although we see little of each character, those with working roles fill them nicely. Everything falls together in a way that would be difficult for a longer work, and the crowding at the entrance in the middle bit divides the story in a way I like. Forgetfulness

Fandom: Hikaru No Go Pairing: Touya/Shindou Author on LJ: mousapelliAuthor Website: The RatboxWhy this must be read: The rivalry between Shindou and Touya has a purpose, but they might arrive there without realizing it at first. A humorous take on Touya and Shindou finally reaching the perfect match, with a more unusual location for the game this time. In the end, after all, they're both go-freaks... Perfect Game

(Sorry for my absence until now...) Fandom: Hikaru no Go Pairing: Gen, or slight Hikaru/Akira Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown Why this must be read: Naturally enough, Go games often show up in Hikago fiction, and shorter pieces that involve Hikaru and Akira - whose relationship is focused on their rivalry - are often structured around them. The previous rec (I can remember back that far!) was set in Hikaru's room, but a common place to find the two in is Akira's father's go parlor. This is a somewhat older example of such a story, and is a solid showing, covering a some of the touchstones of the relationship with a few added moments of cuteness. Hitomi no Naka no Melody

Hello, I'm hua, and I'll be driving your small fandom Hikaru no Go for this month. Hopefully I'll be able to get this sucker up to the speed limit by the end of the month. Fandom: Hikaru no Go Pairing: None Author on LJ: supacatAuthor Website: !Super Cat OnlineWhy this must be read:Shindou and Touya and Sai. A large part of Hikaru no Go is the chase; everyone seems to be constantly measuring their skills against someone else. This is a short piece that moves very calmly for the nature of the discussion, which is not usual, but in context I like the style. It's an intimate setting but sort of a detached way of processing it, different from the usual meltdowns in the go salon. Touya is very Touya; I can envision his first line very well. Marked

(So late, I know. So, so late.)Hikaru No GoHikaru No Go (also known as Hikago, as I will undoubtedly slip into calling it sooner or later) is a manga that was serialized in Weekly Jump a few years back. There are 23 volumes of the manga and an anime which covered a good portion of that, with further material in specials. The series is the brainchild of Hotta Yumi, illustrated by Obata Takeshi (later of Death Note), with go professional Umezawa Yukari providing consultation on go matters (many of the games in the series are based on actual go games). Basically, go is a board game, and Hikaru no Go is about a boy and his ghost playing that game. How could you go wrong? ( Let's GO! )
