Title: Five Extraordinary Encounters That (Probably) Never Happened
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo
Author's Website: Hieroglyfics
Why this must be read: Because it's five crossovers for the price of one? [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo  worked a really tasty mix of Slings & Arrows with some well-known fandoms that starts funny and ends on a sweet note. What makes this an even more fabulous read is that every vignette has a different S&A character. She keeps everyone's voices true and weaves multiple 'verses and endless possibilities that celebrate every fandom that is mentioned.

This short (1,850 words) fic can, on occasion, be flail-inducing. It's that good.

Fandom: THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Pairing: Andy/Miranda, Miranda/Stephen
Length: 2800 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thanatopsis76
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

Technically this is the fifth story in the 'Ham Sandwich' series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Miranda's faced with five disasters: an earthquake, a blackout, a missing assistant, traffic, and petulant children. Some of Miranda's solutions display hidden skills, some are total (yet oddly reasonable) crack, while one isn't hers at all.

Why this must be read:

I'm not sure Miranda lies often, but I do think when asked a question she doesn't want answered, or when in an uncomfortable situation, she obfuscates or misdirects or just plain steamrolls over everyone else. Especially when a truthful answer will leave her vulnerable. In this fic we see her vulnerable five times, a how each time changed her life just a little.

Why this must be read:

The second of my recs featuring the twins, Cassidy in particular, and their evolving definition of family. What I really love is eventual inclusion of Andy in that family, in large part because of how Cassidy sees her mother change.

Tonight, Cassidy hears her mother’s voice coming through the wall of her bedroom for the first time in forever. Her mom is talking to someone on the phone. Cassidy has no idea who it is. But there’s something in the way she’s speaking, all slow and calm, that makes Cassidy’s stomach do flips. She isn’t angry, so Cassidy doesn’t think it’s about the magazine. Usually Mom’s conversations about work are really fast. She calls someone, tells them to do something, and hangs up. But now, she’s just chatting. Cassidy watches the clock, starting at 9:57pm. By the time she falls asleep, sometime between 10:28 and 10:29, her mother is still speaking in that slow, calm voice that sends Cassidy into peaceful dreams.

Why this must be read:

Although their screen time's rather limited I've always found the twins interesting, if only for the extra dimension they add to Miranda's character. But in this fic I love them in their own right. Beautifully written, with details that seem straight from a child's mind, I can't possibly describe the amount of love I have for this story.

When she first came out, Caroline had experienced a moment of indecision and refused to breathe for four whole minutes. “Wasn’t sure if we were good enough,” said Daddy, and Caroline liked that idea – her baby-self holding her breath, deciding.

Cass breathed right away, probably because she was already late. Cass always did everything fastfastfast. But it didn’t matter because they were too small anyways; Mummy and Daddy couldn’t take them home. Instead they spent their first month in an incubator, on their backs beside each other like upturned beetles. And maybe they remembered this feeling of helplessness, later, because they never turned anything on its back that couldn’t get up again (this mostly meant bugs in the garden at the old house, but sometimes people too).

As they grew up, they would learn their mother did not share the same philosophy.

Pairing: Andy/Miranda, John/Rodney, Teyla

Why this must be read:

Because is there anything greater than the idea of Miranda Priestly and Rodney McKay, holders of the two largest egos in fandom, conversing?

10th-Aug-2009 04:59 pm The 'She Likes a Prizefight' Series by Telanu (NC-17)
Fandom: THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Pairing: Andy/Miranda
Length: 30,000 (series total)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] somniesperus
Author Website: The Rag and Bone Shop
Why this must be read:

The author's summary of the first story is an absolutely perfect quote by Iris Murdoch: "love is the difficult realization that someone other than oneself is real." Part of the difficulty in writing Miranda/Andy is that in the movie each sees the other rather one dimensionally. To Miranda assistants are little more than that and are rarely, if ever, seen as people in their own right. Miranda spends most of the movie as the consummate "Dragon Lady" and it's only at the end that Andy begins to understand that there may be more to her. In this series, Telanu continues the development of each character and with them, their relationship.

What I love best about this series is the second story. It's a retelling of the first story, but written from Miranda's perspective and in second person POV. It should be near impossible to pull off, but Telanu does it so beautifully that the reader feels like they're right there with Miranda.

Hello all! My name's Auto and this month I'll be driving the van for a small but wonderfully awesome fandom. If you've never read the book or seen the movie, don't worry! Neither had I when I entered the fandom, and I've still only seen bits of the movie. Most (if not all) of my recs are going to be femslash between the two main characters, Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs, in part because that's what dominates the fandom and in part because I love a strong female character and with Miranda and Andy I get two of 'em with a side of power dynamics.

Why this must be read:

This is the fic that brought me into the fandom. For anyone who reads Logan/Rogue for X-Men, victoria p. is probably a familiar name. Her fics always have spot of characterization and although I wouldn't call the writing sparse, it's without padding so you know that every detail is there for a reason.

Still Life With Lipstick focuses on Andy after the movie. A more mature, independent Andy who still finds herself inexplicably drawn to Miranda. But what I really love about this fic is the look at Miranda. She's the one making the first move and leaving herself vulnerable, while at the same time keeping the cold, unapproachable front that's her constant companion.
