Why this must be read:

Lovely story detailing the warp and weft of Samuel Norman Seaborn's life via the bespoke suit he bought for Bartlet’s first inauguration. Short, but good, this story gets to the heart of Sam in quick, deft strokes, the economy of words in direct opposition to the greatness of his capacity for love and duty.

A quote:

I bought this suit for President Bartlet's first inauguration. I had it made, actually, custom-tailored from a mid-weight wool-silk blend. I wore it under cashmere for the swearing-in when it was so cold I couldn't feel my fingers grasping my spare, emergency copy of the speech Toby Ziegler and I had written for the occasion. It was new, then, as was I, as were we all.

Why this must be read:

And another Sam rec, because it's all too easy to forget about Sam, but he was the soul of the show, its true idealist, for three and a half seasons.

This story is a short, sharp look at Sam as he explains to a drunk Donna how he's come to be the man he is. Growing up rich, white, American, male and beautiful makes it a little harder sometimes to be who you really want to be, but Sam's working on it.

As always, violet's writing is spare and lyrical, and her characterization is true.

A quote:

She tipped her head back and closed her eyes against the amber glare of the streetlights. "But how did you get from the legal beagle--"

"--Eagle--"

"--To the guy with ideals and things?" she concluded. "Doesn't it normally go the other way?"

He frowned. "Not if you work at it."

"So you work at it? You try to, what, not know things so you can be this guy, or what?"

"Don't we all try to do that with things we don't want to know?" He laughed emptily. "Not knowing everything is all that makes it okay sometimes."

Just a gorgeous and utterly brutal look at the realities of war that's graphic, but not gratuitous., through Zoe's eyes. Excellent Mal and Zoe, and a beautiful way with language.

Why this must be read:

Written based on the script for "Heart of Gold", Ana shwos us the Firefly 'verse through the eyes of Helen, Jayne's favourite whore. It's an elegant, well-crafted little story that just captures the tone and feel of the series perfectly, and illuminates the characters in a way that sometimes you only can from the sidelines.

Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Grissom/Sara
Author on LJ: not that I know of (and I'm sure someone will correct me soon *g*)
Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/a_mossley/index.html
Why this must be read:

Oh, wow. First and foremost, because it's Epic-with-a-capital-E. I believe I've mentioned my long!fic kink before.

Second, because it takes Sara and Grissom apart and puts them back together in a slow, painstaking way that leaves no stone unturned. The prose is clean, wonderfully so, the emotional issues are real and gritty.

The basic premise is that Sara views a bus accident, and helps at the scene. While she is doing so, her picture is taken, and overnight she becomes a national celebrity. And then the PTSD sets in. She's forced to reevaluate her entire life up to that point, and her career as a CSI. It's almost more of a Sara character piece than a Grissom/Sara piece, in the end.

Really, I could sit here and gush for another couple of hours, but I'll let you discover for yourself.

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
Pairing: Jack/Will
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shrift
Author Website: shrift's fan fiction
Why this must be read:

Will/Jack is honestly not a pairing I can see in the movie, and I can see most of them if I squint hard enough. It takes a very rare story to get me to enjoy the pairing, and "Hurricane Jack" is a very rare story indeed.

shrift writes in Jack's voice, which is impressive in itself, and the story is lovely and twisty and as full of parenthetical asides as Jack's speech. It's funny, plausible, and hot, and doesn't take the easy way out of dismissing or vilifying Elizabeth.

Did I mention the funny?

shrift's summary: In which Will Turner most emphatically does not avoid familiarity with pirates, Captain Jack Sparrow cheats in his infamous and fabulous fashion, vast quantities of rum lead to drunkenness and debauchery, and there are no silly nautical euphemisms for sex (so long as the barnacles don't count).

And the barnacle bit is probably the most amusing nautical euphemism that's not really a euphemism (probably) I've ever seen.
