01:04 pm B & D Beside the Sea by Sebastian (PG-13)
Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Author on LJ: no
Author Website: no

Why this must be read: I might as well state my bias upfront: Sebastian is my favourite writer. If I could recommend only one author to be read, it would be Sebastian (there may be more than one writer by this name in fandom at large; this is the Sebastian who wrote Pros and Blake's 7 slash in the 1980's and 90's). One of the cool things about her writing is that a significant change can be seen in it over the years she was in fandom. She developed as a writer, increasingly producing more layered and complex texts. Hence, her later stories are more often recced. Her earlier work comprises mostly simpler, often sweeter, tales, many of them first-time situations: and they're just as fine in their way as the later ones, and more beloved by some fans than her mature work.

So, moving on from specific holidays to what the lads get up to during their time off, here's an older circuit story of Bodie and Doyle at the beach. We get Sebastian's trademark melding of under-the-skin character depiction with snapshot scene-setting in a first-time story set on the solid rock of their long-term partnership. It serves up a wholly charming dish of sun, sea, sand, suntan oil, and sex.

05:23 pm Subject Line: Busy Week on the Fridge by Julad (R for Language)
Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK USA
Pairing: Brian/Justin
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] julad
Author Website: Ambivalent Pleasures

Why this must be read:Communication, Brian and Justin style. This is a hilarious look at a "week in the life" of Brian and Justin. It was written for the QAF Grocery Store Challenge, and was extremely well received. The voices are clear, the characterizations are so well done that I'm amazed we haven't actually seen this on the front of the loft's sub-zero.

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: gen, no pairing
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: http://unitb.slashcity.net/andromeda/andromedamain.html
Why this must be read:

Snapshots of what might have been. AU.

As a summary, it doesn't tell you much. But that's a good thing, trust me! This is in the vein of the "5 Things That Never Happened" stories and it's one of those stories that grabs you right from the get go and then throws you for a loop time and again, never quite what you expect it to be... but instead? It's better. For me, this is the diffinitive AU piece of the fandom. A must read.

I don't want to say much more, because this is one of those stories that are better when you go into them blind. Interested yet? I hope so... :)

07:10 pm Comfortable by Tara LJC O'Shea (PG)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Simon/Kaylee
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] taraljc
Author Website: http://ljconstantine.com/
Why this must be read:

I love Tara's Simon/Kaylee stories more than pretty much anybody else's S/K in the fandom. Normally, I'm a Simon/Mal or Simon/Jayne fan, but when Tara writes the characters, it feels just like you're watching an episode of the show, completely natural and right. She and Joss Whedon are pretty much the only two people I know of who can make me read S/K and not only like it, but love it.

This story is no exception.

It's just a small moment of time in the life of our favorite doctor and mechanic, a short but meaningful conversation in the passenger lounge. It's light and lovely and pitch perfect, hitting each note in the characters' personalities with spot on accuracy. One of those reads that makes you sigh happily when it's done, a satisfied smile on your face.

10:56 pm The Daughters of Abraham by Melymbrosia (PG-13)
Fandom: THE WEST WING
Pairing: none; Ellie gen-fic
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] melymbrosia
Author Website: Inauthentic Prototype
Why this must be read:

It's a sharp, beautiful story delving into a little-seen character.

Taking a left turn away from CJ/Toby and pairing-fic in general for a moment, we have "The Daughters of Abraham." The title refers to a concept Abbey brought up in the hastily-written post-9/11 episode Isaac & Ishmael; here Melymbrosia uses the theme of sibling rivalry to examine the Bartlets' middle daughter, Ellie. In the first-season episode bearing her name, we discover that Ellie feels marginalized as a member of the Bartlet family, that her father always liked Zoey, and then Liz, best.

Here we see the toll this has taken on Ellie. We see, too, the difficulty she has in coping with the life her parents have thrust upon her. Being the daughter of a president can't be easy; in this story, we see just how hard it could be.
