Fandom: The Sentinel Title: Sentinel Cordon Bleu Pairing: None Author on LJ: None as Far as I know Author Website: Kim's FanfictionWhy this must be read:After the Sentinel went off the air, a number of Virtual Seasons popped up and, fortunately for us TS fans, recruited some of the best in the fandom to write for them. One such writer was Kim Heggen. Kim exploded onto the Sentinel fandom with a fic called Justifiable Means (also well worth a read! *G*) and kept on going. Her contribution put Jim and Blair into an undercover situation they certainly never expected...a cooking competition. And typically...Blair's at his finest in coming up with their cover and, just like Jim says in the fic It's a typical Sandburg scheme... bizarre, creative and something that no one else would ever think of. So it just might work. The story is hosted at Faux Paws Productions the Virtual Series it was written for. It is linked from Kim's page but the link seems to be wrong so for your reading pleasure...a direct link. *points down* Sentinel Cordon Bleu

Fandom: BTVS Pairing: Giles/Spike Authors on LJ: wolfling and mpoetess Author Websites: Wolfling's Lair and Pointy StakesSpoilers: This is a Season 6 AU. Why this must be read:Giles/Spike isn't an easy pairing to make work, but these two authors are successful in creating an AU in which two sad Brits bond in their grief. The guys have more the usual woe-is-me angst--you can tell how angry they are, and that makes their emotions seem real to me. This story has had lasting appeal for me. Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE Pairing: None Author on LJ: dexfarkinAuthor Website: Dex's Mailing ListWhy this must be read: This is an amazingly well-written murder mystery, equal parts police procedural, horror, and suspense. It's an evocative look at the uneasy relationship between humans and mutants, as well as the uneasy relationship between Scott Summers and Emma Frost. (Let's ignore recent developments in the comics, okay? This story was written before all of that and is vastly more in character anyway.) Even if you don't know much about the X-Men, I highly recommend this story for the atmosphere and the gripping plot. I guarantee you'll be on the edge of your seat. Fandom: Big Wolf on Campus Pairing: Lori/Becky, Merton/Tommy Author on LJ: carolinecraneAuthor Website: Desirderium CaritasWhy this must be read: This series of fics, begun with Adulation is a rare thing in the BWoC fandom. Rarer even than het, it is *femslash.* Though Becky and Lori never interacted directly in canon, Caroline Crane builds a relationship between them--from cautious attraction, to smut, to happily ever after. And if you notice the looks that pass between him and your brother you don't say anything, because you're not supposed to notice these things about the boy you're in love with. Just like you're not supposed to notice how beautiful your brother's other best friend is, and if you do notice it's only because you wish you were more like her. After all, she's Tommy's ex-girlfriend, so of course you want to be just like her. Adulation (PG) Honey (NC17) Drift (PG) Grafting (PG)

Fandom: Big Wolf on Campus Pairing: Merton/Tommy Author on LJ: greenetAuthor Website: Cocoon CrashWhy this must be read: Woo! We have a convert to the BWoC fandom! Sascha eases into Big Wolf fic with this sweet drabble wherein Merton is shocked, *shocked,* and Tommy knows what he wants. "You're cursed," Merton announced, pleased with his conclusion. "You have to be. That's the only explaination. Have you upset any gypseys lately? Stolen anyone's chickens? Eaten the last ice cream in the fridge?" Drabble

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS Pairing: Legolas/Gimli Author on LJ: prillalarAuthor Website: prillalar.comWhy this must be read: The idea that opposites attract has become such a fanfic cliche that a pairing like Legolas/Gimli needs special care if it's not to get bogged down by the whole elf/dwarf dichotomy. 'Thrown' is a gem because Halrloprillalar recognises and exploits that dichotomy but never forgets that Legolas and Gimli aren't just blank representatives of different races but also a couple of individual and very interesting blokes who want to wrestle wrestle. The idea of contrast is incorporated not just in the story, but in the prose itself; the two of them speak, for instance, in a high, intricate style, even though they are discussing (in word and deed) sport 'n sex. The dialogue is deliciously flirty and really very romantic; the two of them easily persuade the reader even as they're persuading each other. Thrown

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS Pairing: Legolas/Ent Author on LJ: eyebrowofdoomAuthor Website: Forehead SpaceWhy this must be read: There are actually a couple of Belinda's stories that I love even more than this one, but in keeping with the crack_van mandate to introduce (amongst other things) controversial fic, I'm reccing 'A Weight of Pliant Wood'; due to its unusual pairing, this fine story has been known to attract its share of (undeserved) wank. It's tough to see what the wank is about; the OMC (OEC?) puts a thousand Mary-Sues to shame by making himself utterly, genuinely charming as he woos Legolas right off his feet. There are a few stray tendrils and a branchful of naughty leaves, and I can just imagine the sly look on Belinda's face as she wove this tale of elvish and entish seduction.
