Fandom: Pirates of the Carribean Pairing: Elizabeth/Anamaria pre-slash Author on LJ: collieAuthor Website: Through My EyesWhy this must be read: When I first started reading PoTC fanfic, there were any number of fics wherein Will and/or Elizabeth longed for the sea and freedom--usually as embodied by Jack Sparrow. This story deals with the same idea, but finds Elizabeth intrigued with Anamaria: a woman, like herself, but strong, free, and respected by a hardened crew of pirates who think little of Elizabeth. Freedom.
It must be the freedom, she told herself, else why in God's name was she so drawn to this woman? She sometimes thought of Captain Sparrow's impassioned words to her, on that rum-fueled night on the beach. The way he spoke of freedom made Elizabeth reconsider everything she had ever known or held dear. She desired to taste it, and here it was, embodied in this very woman. The Wistful One

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Jim/Blair Author on LJ: lanningAuthor Website: Lanning Cook's FictionSize: 210k Why this story must be read: The thing I love about Lanning's stories is that she takes her time in telling them. There is no great rush to get to the end. Instead, she fully explores the stories she tells. Epiphanea is a gentle story told with great humor. She has a wonderful grasp of the characters and her plot is sublime. The story starts with a drunk Jim and proceeds from there. Why has Jim sought comfort in tequila? Why did he assault the Chief of Police? And what happens when Blair overhears part of Jim's confession? ( A Small Sample )EpiphaneiaBe sure to leave feedback for the author if you enjoyed the story.

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS Pairing: Aragorn/Arwen Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Unknown Why this must be read: It's fairly rare that a story about Aragorn and Arwen gives some real due to what she has sacrificed. This story does so in a way that is both joyful and heart-wrenching at the same time. Written from Arwen's point of view to Aragorn, she reflects on what they have both gained and lost: After a moment’s silence, you turned to me, sweeping your hand out over the city and the land in which it sat, "Is it enough, Arwen? Is it enough for the price you will pay?"
Surprised at the bitterness in the words, I searched your face. You were watching me and I realised that even then, still you feared my regret, feared it so much you were trembling with the force of it. Smoothing hair away from the circlet on your brow, I spoke the words that would silence doubt forever, "No. It is not. Though I will love this land and its people, my decision was not made for them. It is you who is enough, I ask for nothing more."
You caught your breath, trapped between joy and remorse, believing me, yet held out of time, struggling with the enormity of what we had done. There is sorrow here as well as joy -- but no despair. The title describes this story perfectly. Sára-lissë - Bittersweet by Erin's DaughterThe follow-up is from Celeborn's POV: A Quiet Love by Erin's Daughter

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: N/A Why this story must be read:This first-time story is just one of those little gems you come across that hits you as simply wonderful and might otherwise get lost in a fandom that has so many talented writers. It is a holiday story centered around Christmas and we find out how Hutch hates that day because he's grumpy as a bear throughout most of the story. *g* But, Starsky is able to turn it around by buying his "big, blond beauty" a house as a present. The boys are both in character and the dialogue flows effortlessly. Hutch is his usual grumpy self and Starsky nudges him out of his holiday funk. (It feels like this story could have easily been an episode of the show). The house to Starsky is a symbol of his love for Hutch, his wanting to make a commitment to the other man. For Hutch, he later realizes that everything he's ever been looking for in wrapped up in his dark-haired partner. The house is what brings them together. My True Love Gave To Me

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: None Author on LJ: mswalterAuthor Website: None Why this must be read: My favorite O.C. episodes are those that deal with the consequences of family life in Chino (The Gamble, The Best Chrismukkah Ever). In this story, Walter creates a scenario where Dawn Atwood wants to see Ryan again, and he’s caught between longing for her love and revulsion at the things he endured while he lived with her. I love the way she writes the Cohen family, who are trying hard to reach out to Ryan, but he still can’t let his guard down after a childhood full of upheaval and violence. I hurt for Ryan as I read this story. An excerpt, after Sandy has answered a phone call at dinner: "That was your mom," he said.
Ryan felt his stomach drop and his mouth go dry.
"What’d she want?" he managed to ask.
"She wants to see you."
Ryan nodded slightly and glanced away. He could feel Kirsten and Sandy watching him. He knew that if he looked up at their faces he’d see that they were worried for him. He had to get away.
"Thanks," he mumbled, and walked out of the house. +++++ His breaths were coming in short, uneven puffs by the time he made it back to the pool house and Ryan could feel his heart hammering in his chest. He clenched his fists at his sides, muscles in his hands and arms and jaw working to repel the thoughts swarming in his head.
Why now? Why when everything was just starting to settle, when he was almost calm and safe and normal?Orange Sky

Fandom: FARSCAPE Pairing: D'Argo Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: LeviathanWhy this must be read: This story is a nice little piece written from D'Argo's POV. A rather inebriated POV. He's none to happy that John has gone off again and, knowing John, gotten himself into trouble. But that's what we love about John... just don't think D'Argo agrees. Every Frelling Planet

Fandom: ANGEL Pairing: Wes/Gunn Author on LJ: mimesereAuthor Website: mimesereWhy this must be read: Here's one last Wesley-plays-darts fic for you all to enjoy. I think this is my favorite Wes/Gunn fic--it's hard to choose--it's definitely one of the stories that made me ship this pairing. The Gunn voice is perfect, and the sex is very much two manly guys getting it on, not a sweet little romance. However, the deep feeling between these two is there in every line. Contrapuntal
