12:40 am Break My Tongue by the stylus (PG)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Dana, Natalie (implied Dana/Casey, but mostly gen)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thestylus
Author Website: the more than rational distortion
Why this must be read:

There are so few stories that really deal with the complex character dynamics of Sports Night, and fewer that do it so well. This was written for a "happy couples" challenge, but this story is much more about friendship, about deep, abiding, platonic love between a group of people who have been part of something extraordinary. This story is an AU in which SportsNight was never purchased at the end of Season Two; one in which Casey defied expectation and took the job with Dan in California. Dana is working for ESPN and having great sex with an Irishman named Ronan, Natalie is still with Jeremy and working for SNL. But neither can really be called happy, at least in this story, with the pitch-perfect Dana eating her martini olives in an attempt to put off saying things that need to be said.

Dana and Natalie are perfect in this story, and it has the kind of resigned tone that we come to associate with not getting exactly what you want, but making do with what you have.

04:10 pm by Penny Dreadful (PG-13?)
Fandom: BLAKES 7
Pairing: Travis/Soolin sort-of and implied
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] archbishopm
Author Website: Penny Dreadful's On-Line Fan-Fiction
Why this must be read:

First published in the zine 'ttba', this fic plays on the fact that Glynis Barber, who played Soolin in S4, also played one of Travis' mutoids in S1. We know that Travis escaped from Space Command in 'Trial' with a pursuit ship and three mutoids. What if Soolin and the mutoid played by GB were one and the same? What if that mutoid rejoined Travis when he became an outlaw? How do mutoids function anyway? These questions are mostly answered in this fic, which also delves into Soolin's early past and gives some explanation as to why Travis began working for Servalan again after 'Gambit'.

I love themes, don't you? So this week's SH recs are themed "Before Canon" What happened to the boys before we saw them in the pilot?

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky and Hutch

Fic Link: http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/starskyhutchgen/classics/Robertson/rookie.htm

Why this must be read: Originally published in The Fix #7, this takes place while Hutch and Luke are partnered, but other familiar names come up, too. Starsky, Iron Mike, Luke, Hutch, they're all here. See how a rookie cop becomes the talented one we saw onscreen and how a friendship with a seemingly opposite man became the most trusted partnerships in history.

Their first undercover case will haunt them...

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky and Hutch

Fic Link: http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/starskyhutchgen/classics/White/Prelude.htm

Why this must be read: Originally published in the zine: The Pits Vol II, it's a look at what happened before we saw them onscreen. Prudholm is one of the most hated bad guys in SH, but his anger all stemmed from the first undercover assignment Starsky and Hutch had. They went undercover at a local high school, which led to the death of Prudholm's son. This story tells about that case, day by day, and how it all unfolded.

06:27 pm The Last Man On Earth by Meridian (NC-17)
Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Author: Meridian
Author website: Meridian's Other Oddities of Fiction
Pairing: Jack O'Neill/Daniel Jackson
Rating: NC-17
Why this must be read:

The whole 'Jack and Daniel somehow end up reading each other's minds' has really been done to death and generally corresponds with Jack and Daniel both acting like teenage girls.

Ahem.

This, however, is a mature look at the situation. Meridian uses the sudden telepathy as a jumping off point to explore Jack and Daniel's relationship with each other, with their respective families, with friends and colleagues and with their allies and enemies.

Meridian also presents an interesting take on the ramifications of suddenly sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings with another person. This is an intelligent and thought-provoking read (the flashback sequence and Sam and Jack's conversation were both things which have lingered with me) which rewards repeat reading.

One thing I especially liked about this story was how well the relationship between Jack and Daniel was handled at every step of the way. The main characterisation is strong, the plot goes far beyond the simple cliche and the supporting characters are used convincingly.

Dr. Fraiser dispatched the usual exams with efficiency, then began testing Jack and Daniel's newfound abilities. Jack thought the whole thing was pretty silly. She had him and Daniel reading cards across a table from each other. )
