Why this must be read: How many times have we listened to a guy with a great voice or a great accent and said or thought something to the effect of 'I'd listen to him read the phone book.'? Well, this is that fic.

01:12 am After Querido, by Linda White (PG-13ish)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin
Author on LJ: Not to my knowledge
Author Website: None, although she has a page at File 40.

Why this must be read:

I first read this story when I was too new to the fandom to really appreciate the depth and detail of this characterization. Even so, I fell in love with the complex, fascinating layers of both Napoleon and Illya in this short rumination. Now that I know the characters better, I appreciate the story that much more.

This piece is part of Linda's Third Level universe, but I don't think you even have to know what that means to enjoy the story. Linda certainly has a very *specific* vision of the guys and their relationship and, as presented here, it's quite accessible and believable.

Linda also writes *beautifully*. After Querido is one of the more "literary" stories I've read in this fandom. The poetic language has a rhythmic cadence that is almost hypnotic, as in this paragraph -- my favorite passage of any fanfiction story:

You count the scars on my body. You touch them with your fingertips and your lips, and you count them out loud sometimes, in Russian. And we remember where I got them. I do the same for yours, and we remember those wounds, too. It pulls us together, it binds us in ways normal people can't understand. The invisible thread of life sewing us one to the other, stitching into my wound and out, into your wound and out, back and forth, until we are wound up together, inextricably woven into the same tapestry of remembered suffering.

01:26 am And Mate by Jessa
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS RPS
Pairing: Elijah Wood/Orlando Bloom
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] escapist_xbq
Author Website: Why Don't We Get On Down?

Why this must be read:
I'd say this is pre-slash. I like this characterization of Orlando. I like that the story is just one moment in time, frozen and displayed for us to see. I like that Elijah is a crafty little bugger. It's a step away from how I've usually seen Elijah and Orlando portrayed. It's a calm moment, when they're not angsting or lusting or doing anything other than enjoying each other's company.

And Mate.

12:19 pm From The Heart by MLM
I'm gonna do MLM recs today because....well, just because;)

Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky/Hutch

Fic Link: http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/starskyhutchslash/classic/MLM/FromtheHeart.htm

Why this must be read: This story was originally published in the Starsky and Hutch Special Collection, published by Neon RainBow Press. It is a simple post-Sweet Revenge story that isn't earth-shattering or suprising or anything that will turn the world on its head. Instead, it's caring and sharing and just living a life that was once taken for granted.

All he needs to know for now is that I love him. That he's the best friend and partner I've ever had. Everything else will work itself out later on.

12:23 pm Uncharted Wilderness by MLM
Fandom: Starsky and Hutch

Pairing: Starsky/Hutch

Fic Link: http://www.squidge.org/~flamingo/starskyhutchslash/classic/MLM/UnchartedWilderness.htm

Why this must be read: This story was originally published in the zine Blue Eyes and Blue Jeans (which is a really good zine). Hutch is taking Starsky on vacation in the wilderness. Starsky does not like the wilderness. You do the math;) This is set after Coffin for Starsky and Hutch thinks it's a good idea to get them away from the city for awhile, after Starsky's near-fatal run-in with the poison. Except, Starsky gets sick again and with the fever comes a break-down of his barriers. Whether it be delerium or truth coming out, the words are spoken and the body responds, forcing Hutch to deal with it. Which would be fine if the memories remained, but when the fever broke, so did Starsky's memories of the revelations he made.

"Nope. In fact I don't remember much of last night at all. Guess I was kinda out of it."

01:38 pm VID REC: Firefly- Harder to Breathe
Vidder:Wolfling
Musical Artist:Maroon 5
Pairing:None
Vidder on LJ:Wolfling
Vidder's Website:Not one available. Using LJ to list vids for right now.

Why this vid kicks ass: It's Firefly and Maroon 5 and the combination is perfect. Wolfling also uses clips from the series that best illustrate different parts of the song while using the song to best illustrate parts of the series. Some of the most exciting and dramatic parts of the show are featured and make this vid one you want to watch again and again. And I like the hint of this being a show where they spend a majority of time in space and it can get "harder and harder to breathe."

08:36 pm Seven Virtues by Selena (PG)
Fandom: BABYLON 5
Pairing: Bester
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] selenak
Author Website: Selena's Fanfiction
Why this must be read:

Selena is known far and wide as the champion of characters most people think are jerks. Not the villains, but the philanderers, gamblers and folks whose agendas don't necessarily match up with the show's hero -- and in Babylon 5, that means Londo Mollari. Selena (who, in her spare time, can be seen as the voice of [livejournal.com profile] londo_mollari on [livejournal.com profile] theatrical_muse) has written heaps of marvelous Londo and Londo/G'Kar fic -- among my favorites are Truth or Dare and her recent Lost in Translation -- and even so, I'm rec'ing Seven Virtues, which isn't about Londo at all.

This is a set of vignettes that shows the private side of Alfred Bester, listed to the tune of seven virtues contrary to the seven deadly sins. They consider canon from the B5 published novels telepath trilogy, but I've never read those and I still love this fic.
