12:27 am Out of the closet, into the frying pan by Cairnsy (PG)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Percy/Oliver
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cairnsy
Author Website: Her website is down, but here’s her ff.net profile
Why this must be read:

Cairnsy is best known for kind of serious, Percy-centric fics (which are quite good- check them out!!). This story isn’t typical of most of her stuff, as she claims that she doesn’t write humor well- but don’t believe her.

In the mood for something short and light and funny as hell? Look no further, folks.

Coming out of the closet is a theme that pops up frequently in slash fanfiction. It seems to be especially prevalent in the Harry Potter fandom, perhaps because of the young age of a lot of the characters. But because the HP books are a fantasy series, authors also get to explore possible attitudes of the wizarding world toward homosexuality. One can write the wizarding world as extremely homophobic, extremely tolerant, or just the same as the muggle world. I’ve seen in written believably a lot of different ways.

That said, you’ve never seen a reaction to coming out the closet quite like this one…

'Nuts. His entire family was nuts…' )

Even if you don’t like Percy/Oliver or have no interest in them whatsoever, check this out anyway, because it’s not really a relationship fic. I think you’ll enjoy it. Hee.

Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI
Pairing: Oriya/Hisoka
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] spinshadow
Author Website: Yumeji::TransFactions
Why this must be read:

Generally speaking, I avoid reading anything on fanfiction.net for a variety of reasons. However, Oriya/Hisoka is such a rare pairing that when I ran across this link on a few rec pages, with positive reactions, I decided to give it a try. I was very pleasantly surprised.

While I have a few quibbles with the characterization in this story, and while it suffers from the common YnM plague of overly flowery physical description, it is nonetheless an elegant exploration of the intriguing dynamic between Oriya and Hisoka. Their canon interactions are both explosive and complex, and the complexity is often lost in fanfiction which pairs them. Not so in this story. The author weaves their mutual curiosity, their grudging respect, their opposing ideologies and their shared background of Japanese tradition into a solid yet delicate foundation on which she builds their growing attraction.

This story is the first in an ongoing series, but I have not read the other stories and I feel this one stands well enough on its own.

02:18 pm Midnight in the Holy City, by researchminion (PG)
Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Lauren Reed/Julian Sark
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] researchminion
Author’s Website: Unkown
Why this must be read:

Being a Lauren fan is painful--so few stories! even less symathetic ones!--so I’m ever so grateful for the Lauren Reed Ficathon and stories like this one. This is a lovely, wistful and painful look at Lauren, who she is, and what matters to her.

iv. Moonlight in the holy city / So thick it warms the air

She visits the city at night.

Revels in becoming, for one evening, just another tourist. Wanders through the ghost tours and revels in the humidity. Enjoys the sensation of pressure on her chest. She forgets about missions and Rambaldi and government husbands.

It doesn’t last long enough, it never does. But for just one moment she appreciates how her life might have been. Married, children, a home on East Battery Street. Calm and peaceful. Everything she has been taught to distrust, to despise.

Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Lauren Reed/Julian Sark; Lauren Reed/Michael Vaughn
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] quiet_rebel
Author’s Website: Rebel: I Will Not Follow
Why this must be read:

For all that I loved Lauren, I admit that her character was far from consistent--or, perhaps, she was the best deceiver of them all. Lauren’s motivations and feelings were never a certainty: did she truly love Vaughn? Did she love Sark? Both? Neither?

“Worth” takes a look at Lauren’s relationships with both these men, without diminishing any of the characters involved.

    Sark pulls the trigger.

She watches the rain wash away the blood on the pavement. She holds the umbrella over Sark and the body.

That evening, when she and Sark have shed their wet attire, she will sneak off into the bathroom once again to call Michael.

This time, he answers on the third ring.

    Something is wrong.

    They talk briefly.

    He does not miss her.

She hangs up and sits on the floor next to the bathtub. She feels numb.

It is only when Sark knocks on the door the next morning does she realize where she is. And who she’s with.
