Pairing: Blake/Avon

Why this must be read:

I can't lie, Oblique is where I go for the hardest, angstiest, toughest B7 fix. Yet, again I find myself reccing a rarity: a more or less positive story with some actual hope in it. This is a very jolly, humourous romp. As the title suggests, it begins with fun but soon turns serious. M. Fae is a master at handling this. The first few pages had me in stitches, giggling at the humour that is at the same time inventive on the author's part, and also fitting for the Liberator crew. I won't spoil even those bits, you'll have to see them for yourself.

A short synopsis of this would be as follows: the Liberator crew teleport down to a distant colony planet. Festivities ensue. Unexpectedly, Blake and Avon get thrown together amidst them [I say 'unexpectedly' as this certainly isn't a Gay Planet fic]. A mixture of angst, reflection and sex ensues. As usual, the characterisations are perfect, all of Avon's fears and insecurities brought out by the situation he finds himself in. And for once, M. Fae portrays Blake in a gentle light, which is always a bonus for this particular Blake fan. This story is nice and lovely, and utterly satisfying in all the possible slashfic ways. Good bedtime reading.

10:04 pm ‘Calling,’ by Velma (PG-13-ish)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Chris / Nick.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] meteredlines, this week (Velma, stop changing pseuds, will you?). Most recently before this, was ‘viasaintpaul,’ which is the LJ link at the website. Don’t be confused, gentle reader.
Author Website: Alone So Far, for this one.
Why this must be read: This is my sole rec for the week now ending. I had a nice little set of themed recs, but Sandy Berger inadvertently snuck them away in his trousers, so…. Ah, well, a new week starts tomorrow.

One of the most common themes in popslash is the inevitability of the Destined Love, as we discussed earlier this month. And there’s something to that, both philosophically and as a literary device. But there’s also the countervailing point that Life Is What Happens Whilst One Was Making Other Plans. Life, that is, is about contingency, and happenstance, and results that don’t seem to make sense of the motives that invoked those results until much later, in hindsight. There are few better – or more affecting – fics of that realist school than this, and few that possess its subtle human insight.

Fandom: STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE
Pairing: Kira/Dukat with minor Garak/Ziyal & Garak/Bashir

Why this must be read:

In the Star Trek universe, the Universal Translator is taken for granted, except in rare episodes such as ST:TNG's 'Darmok' and DS9's own 'Babel'. This story is an interesting look at how DS9 would manage if they were presented with a situation where the translators fail.
