Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK US Pairings: Various Author on LJ: seperisAuthor Website: IndulgenceWhy this must be read:Wildly AU, but still an absorbing, if dark, read, this story is a exploration of what happens when vampires come to town. (Hint: nothing good. The events are likely to squick anyone who likes fluffy stories, so beware.) But I love an inventive AU, and *points at lj name* to have it be a vampire story? Yay! Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI Pairing: Tsuzuki/Hisoka Author on LJ: I'm sure she has one, I just don't know it Author Website: Fallen IconsWhy this must be read: Despite the name, this story is much longer than one hundred words, and absolutely hilarious to boot. Hakushaku, the invisible Earl who appears in both the manga and the anime as nothing more than a Phantom of the Opera half-mask, is one of the more humorous elements of the series, especially with his absolute infatuation with Tsuzuki. This story capitalizes on Teh Funneh inherent in the infatuation, and Hisoka's reaction to it. Hakushaku Drabble

Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI Pairing: Tsuzuki/Hisoka, Terazuma/Wakaba Author on LJ: amet (Thank you, wordsofastory and lost_lorelei) Author Website: Fallen IconsWhy this must be read: It's an Amet twofer! Though not quite as funny as my previous rec, this one does just as good a job at capturing one of YnM's secondary characters, the enigmatic and attractively cranky Terazuma Hajime. Terazuma's partner, Wakaba, takes a day off work. Terazuma copes, in ways that are both humorous and touching. Happy Face

Fandom: ALIAS Pairing: Toni/McKenas Cole Author on LJ: konstantine03Author’s Website: Unknown Why this must be read: konstantine03 bravely chose to write about one of Alias’ minor female characters for the Alias Femme (Fatale) extended challenge. She took Toni, from season one’s two-parter, The Box, and gave her a history and personality. This fic is a wonderful example of what can be done with the most minor of characters. She’d learnt to deal with the wisecracks, the false endearments and inappropriate attempts at humour a long time ago. She didn’t let it affect her anymore. She often found that as soon as she had the chance to prove herself in the field, her fellow agents would rescind their prior statements. That she would slowly become ‘one of the guys.’ It was a repetitive cycle. But one she was willing to put up with in order to gain a good seat at the table. To ensure she remained in the game.
Her prior bitterness and irritation had receded a long time ago.
Or so she thought.
As soon as he called out to her, “Come and show us what you’re made of baby,” all her prior resentment came flooding back. Collecting in the back of her throat with that same familiar acrid taste. That same sensation that seemed to make her blood boil. Make her even more determined to do the job – to do it well – just to show them. To prove their preconceptions wrong.
Maybe it was his flippancy. His tone. She couldn’t put her finger on what it was about his comment that had pushed her buttons, but it had. Some internal trigger had been flipped.
Something in Cole’s eyes seemed to sense it too. Sense the simmering pit of frustration his comment had unleashed within her. His eyes remained fixed on her as she cracked the vault code in under sixty seconds; half of the time they had set aside for her. He seemed to enjoy the power the flippant endearment had given him over her. How it had motivated her in some unspoken way that nothing else could.
He never did call her ‘Toni’ again after that first meeting was over. Fallen

Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI Pairing: None so far Author on LJ: brightwanderer (writing) and childofatlantisAuthor Website: http://www.brightwanderer.net/Why this must be read:HP fans will know this author from the fast-becoming-a-classic post-OotP Sirius+Remus story, Beyond the Veil. Touted as the first in what will be an AU series, this stand-alone story follows the newly deceased Kurosaki Hisoka into his first case as a shinigami. There are many mysteries in this well-plotted, action-filled fic: why is Tatsumi in so much pain? Why is he fighting so much with Hisoka's new partner - Watari? Who is the mysterious person that Hisoka runs into on the street? What is the significance of the empty desk Hisoka takes? The characters are a little darker than many fangirls like to write them, but nicely in-character, and Hisoka's first case is heartwrenching. I devoured this one greedily. Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI Pairing: Tatsumi/Watari Author on LJ: rackhamroseAuthor Website: The woman is all over, with a fic site here and at ff.net but the only place the YnM fic seems to be at the moment is her Livejournal. Why this must be read:Tatsumi and Watari are a fairly popular pairing in the fandom, and this fic brings the best of that to the fore. Both are three-dimensional and perfectly in character - Tatsumi reserved and thoughtful, cautious and careful; Watari bouncy and loyal, funny but sometimes uncertain. The story is written as a series of 21 short chapters, a progression of their relationship through time, as they move from being co-workers to friends to something deliciously more. The emotional journey resonates with the reader, the snapshots of their daily lives in and away from the office are poignant. You can see what draws them together, you can feel the uncertainty and undercurrent of joy that comes when two lonely people find a common ground. It's romantic without being fluffy, very touching and real. threewalls has kindly put all 21 chapters into one convenient post for ease of reading: Twenty-One
