07:34 am The Land Bridge Series by Jane Mailander
well, this is a different sort of rec from me. and i'm telling you right off: bodie dies. so fair warning.

Fandom: PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle(implied), Doyle/Murphy
Author on LJ: probably
Author Website: i don't know
Why this must be read: normally, i hate stories that mess with my OTP, especially when someone dies. but this story is worth reading regardless, because it contains one of the most detailed, true, resonant, heart-wrenching depictions of grief i've ever encountered. i guarantee you'll remember this story for a long time.

the fact that it's well-written, insightful, and shows the growth, changes and acceptance of the characters is just icing on the cake. jane has sent it up as five short stories, but really, it's just one long one, and you should read it that way, all of them straight through. so go: read!

Land-Bridge
Migration
Settlement
Exploration
Commemoration

ETA: ok, i see this was already rec'ed, back in oct 03 (how did i miss that?) go read it anyway; i'll do another one soon

08:30 am Untitled Smallville Trilogy by Corinna (NC-17)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] corinna_5
Author Website: Corinna's Fanfiction

Why this must be read:
The first story in this untitled series made me happy; it's an AU futurefic in which Clark and Lex have been together a long time, but a problem arises when Lois Lane enters Clark's life. Lex is Lex-like, Lois is non-bitchy, and I really like how Corinna injects some realism into the romance. All three stories have some action to spice up the romance, and the second and third stories are even more fun than the first.

02:50 pm VID REC: The O.C. - Mad World
I'm assuming the once-a-month vid rec thing is still in effect, and since this is the last Friday in September, I thought I'd go ahead and post this before I forget.

Vidder: mamoru22
Musical artist: Gary Jules
Pairing: Seth/Ryan
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mamoru22
Vidder's website: http://www.blacksheep69.com/

Why this vid kicks ass:

I haven't run across a lot of O.C. vids in my time in the fandom, so it was a real joy to discover this vidder, who has no less than three O.C. vids on her site. And they're Seth/Ryan, to boot! "Mad World, Version Two" is absolutely lovely; the slow cadence of the song melds perfectly with the drawn-out, longing looks shared between Ryan and Seth in scenes ranging from the Pilot to the season finale. This is a true shipper's vid in the sense that someone who has never seen a single episode of the actual show could be forgiven for believing that The O.C. is the angst-ridden saga of two beautiful young men named Seth and Ryan. It warms the cockles of my slashy little heart.

Clicking below will take you to the LJ post where mamoru22 presents her three O.C. vids. As always, please right-click and save as.

03:43 pm The Thinner The Skin, by Jane St. Clair (PG)
Fandom: WEST WING
Pairing: Josh/Sam
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] 3jane
Author Website: http://www.ravenswing.com/~mirrorgirl/door.html
Why this must be read:

I think of this fic as being the epitome of mainstream Josh/Sam fic. It's not got a wacky interpretation of their relationship to sell, it's not wildly unusual in any way. If anything, it's unusual in its normality - that we lucky West Wing fans can expect fic this good as simply being normal is still quite amazing to me. It's like the meat and potatoes of West Wing fic; plain, maybe, but satisfying, especially when as nicely flavoured as this is. This is quality stuff, and it's fic like this which keeps the fandom going. It's the sort of thing that's perfect for keeping nearby for times when you're not in the mood for anything too smutty or angst ridden or fluffy - times when you just want to get into West Wing world to relax for a while.

So, there you go. Have some post-Noel Josh/Sam angst. It's good, and it'll fill you up nicely. Enjoy. :)

04:20 pm Best Served Cold by pixelvixen (pg)
Fandom: WEST WING
Pairing: Josh/Donna, Donna/m
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pixelvixen
Author Website: http://www.pixelvixen.com/
(Note: I'm not sure the pixelvixen in the above links is the right one. So you're probably better off going to Pix's fic listing here.)
Why this must be read:

Personally, while I gneerally consider myself about as polyfictional as they come, I've never really liked Josh/Donna. It just doesn't work in my head, I'm afraid; while it's blatantly obvious in canon that Donna's in love with Josh, I wouldn't be so quick to say the same for him, and I tend to view the whole thing as Incredibly Doomed. And not in a heartwrendingly angsty way, either, more "oh please" - especially in fic, where Josh and Donna seem to have more than their fair share of Happy Ever Afters, complete with rosegarden weddings and Twoo Lurve and so on and so forth.

You might want to bear that in mind, then, when I tell you that this fic is actually good. Donna has a spine, which is fantastic, and a personality beyond Josh, which is even better. There is banter and all kinds of goodness. There's cuteness, but nothing that makes even me feel ill. It is, in short, really damn good. It made me smile, and well, given by earlier predictions made on that subject, the devil ought to be iceskating to work by now. Go! Read!

09:46 pm Friday Night Drive-in!
Attn. Drivers: Bah, I suck. Completely forgot today was the last Friday of the month, which should have meant Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fan Vid Recs. Please feel free to post your vid rec anytime over the weekend since I failed to give you any notice.

Reccers may post 1 vid rec for their fandom, formatted as follows:

Subject Line: VID REC: Fandom - Song Title

Vidder:
Musical artist:
Pairing:
Vidder on LJ:
Vidder's website:
Why this vid kicks ass:

Because the vidder community has some unique ownership issues, it’s important that reccers be extra careful when making vid recs. Depending on the vidder’s preferences regarding public access to their work, please link your rec in the appropriate manner:

1. If the video is publicly accessible, direct link to the web page the vid is linked on, or if it’s the vidder’s request, to the HTML splash page of their site.

or…

2. Link to the site with instructions on acquiring the password, if the site is protected – do not reveal the password yourselves.

or…

3. Provide contact info for the vidder if their vids are only available privately (tapes, dvd-R’s, collections, etc.).

Do not:
Hotlink, i.e. link directly to the video file rather than the webpage.
Re-upload videos that a vidder has removed from the web.
Delay in removing a vid rec if requested to do so by the vidder.

Thank you!

Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/keiko_kirin/index.html

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: Jack/Daniel
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] agentotter
Author Website: http://www.fadedpress.com/index.html
Why this must be read:

Because it's so freaking good. I just reread it to think about what I'd say, and I get to lines like these )

It's in the style of the "oops, the earth is broken and we must go somewhere else" type story, but doesn't make any bones about attempting to tell you what might be wrong with the earth, which is a very clever way of letting you imagine anything you want while concentrating on the important aspects of the story, like how the characters are going to react to the broken earth. Reacting to the breaking instead of trying to fix it.

They're very much them while they're somewhere else and it's very good.
