It has a pre-existing relationship between Skinner, Mulder, and Scully, which is always nice to see after so many first-time stories (but don’t worry, if you want to know how this one started check out the
Morning Glow series which has a nice stranded-in-a-cold-cabin beginning for the threesome).
“The Door” puts Mulder and Scully out in the field with Skinner on a remedial field course for wayward agents – Mulder and Scully, for once, are there as examples of how to behave. They manage to stumble right into an X-File when the group gets kidnapped, and strange things start to happen...
The story includes an original female character who’s a bit of a Mary Sue (knows a bit too much about various topics convenient to the plot), but she’s likeable and not too perfect (and balances out the threesome nicely). The anthropological details and tidbits of the lost culture they stumble across create a backdrop that seems authentic, and the story feels gentle and humorous while also being fast-paced...and the hot sex scenes don’t hurt a bit, either.
