Fandom: WEST WING Pairing: Josh/Sam Author on LJ: don't think so - the only person by that name I found seemed to be entirely unrelated Author Website: don't think so Why this must be read:This one won a Jed for NC-17 romance, and there's a reason for it. Personally, I find it a bit unbelievable, and maybe Josh and Sam are what I'd call rather too forthcoming, but... fics have committed much greater sins than that, and this makes up for it with some of the loveliest snark I've had the pleasure of reading. Even better, the funny isn't restricted to the dialogue either; too many fics fall into that trap, I think, but this one is just a delight. Any fic where Josh is described as looking like an "especially well-educated turtle" has to be worth reading, people. Oh, and there's pretty good porn, too, for those of you who like such a thing. :D (I thought it was about time I recced some, really, heh.) Trust In The Difficult

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Pairing: Jack/Will/Elizabeth Author on LJ: guede_mazakaAuthor Website: Tangible SchizophreniaWhy this must be read: Jack and Elizabeth are two peas in a pod, but their similarity -- and their closeness -- may have cost them both Will. Except impusliveness isn't the only trait shared by Jack and Elizabeth, and they are more then wily enough to turn betrayal into courtship. A very piratical courtship. guede_mazaka has a great feel for all sides of the Will/Jack/Elizabeth threesome. Here, in particular, she gets inside Will's head, showing his solid strength, stubborn will and meticulous mind as he works out what's happened in his life and what he wants his future to hold. In addition to the main threesome, guede_mazaka drops in appearances from several other characters, all excellently characterized and of service in forwarding the plot. Strongly plotted, superbly characterized and awash with guede_mazaka's strong, perfect prose, Courtship is a true delight through and through. Courtship

Fandom: THE O.C. Pairing: Seth/Summer Author on LJ: ?? Author Website: Facesdown's Fanfiction Index Why this must be read:This story is set during season two as Seth tries to learn to be a better person via his experiences with Summer, and Summer tries to overcome her fears of letting Seth back into her life. This is a nice, happy fic that leaves you with a smile on the face. So often in this fandom, it's all about the angst (which I do love), and occasionally it's nice to stumble upon a story that is pure fun where everything works out as you want it to. It's set around Seth's birthday, a surprise party that his mother and Summer cooked up, and what that means for Seth and Summer's "friendship." ( For an excerpt from the story... )If you're ever looking just to have a smile put on your face, I'd recommend reading this story. The Perfect Gift - Mood: cheerful

Fandom: ANGEL THE SERIES Pairing: Gunn, Cordelia Author on LJ: glossingAuthor Website: GlossingsWhy this must be read:I love Gunn far more than is reasonable or healthy and character studies are a big bag of wow with me too. So a character study in which a character studies himself through the mirror of another is a pile of wow with a helping of yay and a side of order of godilovesthisficsomuch. Everything works, the themes running through of a stage set, cinema, fake/real, imaginary/illusionary remembered/forgotten all build this picture of a man in search of himself. This isn't a fic about Gunn, this is Gunn writing himself. In the words of Valeria Fate: I don't think God put me on this planet to judge other people's writing. I think he put me on this planet to gather specimens and take them back to my home planet. I'm taking this one back with me. ( Excerpt )Self Portrait in a Coma Patient

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS Pairing: Frodo/Sam Author on LJ: ? Author Website: ? Why this must be read:Very amusing, and also useful: if non-fic-reading friends have noted the Frodo/Sam elements in the LOTR movies or books, send them to this fic by way of introduction to the great world of fanfic. It's funny, clever, and concise, and therefore non-threatening and easy for novices to understand and enjoy. If they ask for more, you've got them hooked! What a Strange Idea

Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Pairing: Will/Groves, mentions Will/Elizabeth Author on LJ: linaelynAuthor Website: Cultural InfidelitiesWhy this must be read: A mindblowing duet of angst and sensuality, this pair of stories is like nothing else I've read in the fandom. In the beginning and on the surface its is a light tale of drunken debauchery, of flirting and desire and passion. But underneath and through that linaelyn wends a second thread of duty and infidelity, temptation and betrayal. It's an intoxicating mix. linaelyn's Will is wholly believable and yet wholly her own, both callow youth and confident man, madly in love with his wife and yet still curious about what else life might offer him. Her Groves too is a man conflicted, torn between his desires and his conscious, between his personal choices and the dictates of his career. In the end something has to give, for both of them, and linaelyn does a perfect job of guiding her readers and her characters on the breathtaking trip to the dizzy heights of that inevitable fall. Fandom: FARSCAPE Pairing: John/Aeryn (in more ways than one) Author on LJ: rubberneckAuthor's Website: fic by feldmanWhy this must be read: Because it has zombies. Oh, you wanted more than that? Okay, because feldman's one of the most creative minds in the Farscape fandom and, in her hands, anything can work. She's also got a wicked way with words, has a firm handle on ALL the characters, and has the ability to write heart ripping angst one minute and hilarious humor the next. My favorite thing feldman does with this story besides the zombies? The dialogue. Snappy, flowing, and just jumping off the page. I can't really delve too much into the story without giving a lot away but let's just say it's almost a mystery, what the hell is going on, and feldman takes you through and gives you clues to what's happening. When you figure out what's happened, you'll either gasp or smack your head. And the zombies. Skull Candy

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS Pairing: none Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown Why this must be read: Most slash readers check out gen as well, and this one left a long-remembered image of a drugged Bodie running (you know how beautifully they run) through London while his fellow agents chase him. Here's an excerpt: The madman and his keeper, Doyle thought, launching himself to tackle Bodie to the ground and earning himself a rebounding slug in the head from his partner. Bodie, it seemed, did not want to be quiet. Bodie did not want to walk about sensibly. Bodie wanted to run like a wild fox, zig-zagging across the park from one end to the other. At least he was still in the park, Doyle conceded, staring at the sky and waiting for the stars to stop revolving. Three Men and a BodieBalzer's other Pros stories are here: Pros fanfic
