Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Horatio Hornblower/Archie Kennedy
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cimmerianwillow

Why this must be read:

There's a lot to love about this story, but what endears it to me the most is the location, quite possibly the worst rented room ever to grace a first time fic. [livejournal.com profile] cimmerianwillow positively revels in that room. From the smog-encrusted window to the remarkably dilapidated bed, she really captures the feel of the worst lodgings a couple of cash-strapped recently-ex-POWs could possibly find themselves in. And then, having created such a thoroughly unappealing location, she manages to make the reader completely forget about it and only have eyes for the two frustrated sailors within. And oh, are they ever frustrated. A classic example of the perils of non-verbal communication: just because it's non-verbal, that doesn't mean they're both speaking the same language.

06:14 pm Bringing Gifts by Deborah Judge (G)
Fandom: SILMARILLION
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [personal profile] deborah_judge
Author Website: Deborah's Stories
Why this must be read:

JRR Tolkien's Catholicism has led several authors to attempt to fit Tolkien's universe into a Christian framework, equating the creator Eru/Iluvatar with the Christian God. To my mind, Deborah's version is the most successful of those I've encountered. 'Bringing Gifts' gives insight not only into a possible future for Maglor but, more profoundly, into the meaning of Christ's life & death. It's also a beautifully written and structured vignette which shows just how much a skilled author can pack into less than a thousand words.

06:43 pm Reunions by rainer76 (PG)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: Jack Crichton, John Crichton
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rainer76
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

One of Farscape's most compelling episodes was season 4's Terra Firma, in which marooned astronaut John Crichton finally made it home... only to find it was the last place he fit, anymore. It's stranger-in-a-strange-land, not a new concept; but the character portrayals were so real--angst and hope and longing and despair, balanced on the thin edge of a knife--that the ep became a fic writer's playground.

Rainer chose an important but secondary character for the fic's POV, which makes it all the more poignant. It's short but packs one heck of a wallop, and it offers those who might be unfamiliar with the story and characters a tantalizing taste of the Farscape universe. Try it--it'll hurt, but you'll like it. That's Farscape.

Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: Susan Crichton, John Crichton
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

Farscape fandom has enjoyed the emergence of several talented new authors over the last year, and since [livejournal.com profile] crack_van is all about pimping good fic, I'm beyond pleased to be able to rec this promising first fic.

jsdeanis also dabbles in the season 4 Terra Firma storyline, crafting a marvelously rich portrait of one of the most nebulous characters in Farscape: John Crichton's sister, Susan. We see the infamous prodigal through the eyes of one who loved him, yet wasn't blind to his flaws, and who is all too aware of the changes three and a half years have wrought. jsdeanis' Susan searches for a glimpse of her brother in the stranger who returned home wearing his face.

08:39 pm Such a Little Thing by Jenwyn (PG)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Aragorn/Boromir
Author on lj: Unknown
Author website: Unknown
Why this must be read: The author summarizes this story by saying, "It is a strange fate, to suffer so much fear and doubt over the man sitting beside you." Nothing *big* happens, but through the examination of little moments, this short fic says much about Aragorn and his relationship with the Ring and with Boromir.

But that lapse in the snow-- not so much Boromir's as his own-- not the command but the hand on the hilt of his sword-- how much damage had that display of mistrust done? Should he not have let Boromir overcome the Ring's whispers on his own, to give the man confidence in his ability to resist them? What had Aragorn's own doubts cost him? Cost the Fellowship?

Fandom: Star Trek: TNG
Pairing: P/Q (unrequited)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] blog_mercutio (personal journal), [livejournal.com profile] bard_mercutio (boyband RPS posting journal)
Author Website: Mercutio's Stories
Why this must be read:

This isn't a pairing fic. In fact, the unrequited P/Q stuff is not only unnecessary but I've read a version of the story where the author successfully removed it. That's not the point. The point is this:

What would it be, to discover the purpose you were made for in life... and hate it?

What would it be, to be faced with a godlike entity who feels compelled to destroy humanity... but loves you too much not to let you try to talk him out of it?

Extremely chilling. Also, comes up with the best explanation I've ever seen for *why* the Continuum would be picking on humanity specifically when there are so many other "savage" races out there.
