12:14 am Blaze by Janis Cortese (R)
Fandom: HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Archie/Horatio
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tanacawyr
Author Website: Janis Cortese

Why this must be read:

This is a gorgeous and richly detailed first-time Ferrol story where Archie get caught in a storm and must seek shelter for the night. We can all imagine where that leads. What's striking about this story is the beautiful prose and the way repressed, stoic Horatio eroticizes Archie's vitality and liveliness - all his laughs and smiles. The characterization is so well done that this could be a cut scene - which makes for the best kind of slash, the kind that blends naturally into the canon. Definitely one of my favorite Ferrol stories, and a bit different than the usual making out in the cell.

11:36 am Circle Round Again by voleuse (PG-13)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: Kara/Lee
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] voleuse
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] moodfic and Fanfiction by Voleuse
Why this must be read:

If I look closely enough, the major reason I love the idea of Kara & Lee is because they're tough, battered and broken -- as people and as a couple -- as friends, lovers, or some twisted version in the middle.

At the same time, I love fic that tries to explore what their history before the reunion on the Big G just before the attacks. There's a lot of open ground there to explore, and I love the take that [livejournal.com profile] voleuse takes on it in Circle Round Again. As they exist in this story, there never was a blissful, golden past. It was always turbulent, passionate, combative.

With her spare and powerful style [livejournal.com profile] voleuse manages to wrap up a world of endings...of beginnings. This is a story that is neither happy, nor sad, it just exists, very much like Lee and Kara and all the rest are trying to do.

11:58 am All That I Have by Kazzy (G)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Length: 1,600 words
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bytheseaside
Author Websites: Kazzy's Fanfiction.net Profile; Star Wars Story Board

Why this must be read:

This story is told from Padmé's point of view and occurs between the trilogies, just a couple of years after Revenge of the Sith. It will probably be AU once Revenge of the Sith hits theaters next week.

In this brief one-shot, Padmé is speaking as if to Leia, telling her daughter about the past and about Anakin. She really knows and understands her husband, and it shows. Interestingly enough, Padmé also understands herself and her own motivations. Given that she's had a couple of years to mull things over, she's gained a great deal of insight into her own character and actions just preceding and during the tumultuous Clone Wars. She is understandably melancholy about what has happened to her little family, but finds that she would change very little of what she and Anakin did.

Padmé's character voice rings very true, and the characterizations of herself, Leia, and Anakin are near perfect. This story is almost all angst, but it's good angst. Destiny has not been kind to the Skywalker family, after all. Highly recommended.

03:23 pm Steel, by Dien Alcyone (PG-15)
Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Elrond/Boromir
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dien
Author Website: Dien’s Garden
Why this must be read:

Again, with the Boromir love: I read this story very early in my introduction to the LOTR fandom, and yet it has stuck with me always. Perhaps it is the odd pairing (but isn’t it hot nonetheless?) or perhaps it is the beautiful prose that tells the story. Perhaps it’s both. Or perhaps it’s just more, because this story is one of the most interesting exercises I have ever read at trying to explain Elrond’s animadversion towards Men and Boromir’s issues with Elves.

Oh, and the UST doesn’t hurt either.

07:14 pm The One in the Cave by Anna S. (NC-17)
Fandom: BTVS
Pairing: Spike/Xander
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eliade
Author Website: Anna's Stories and So Forth

Why this must be read:
I read countless Spike/Xander stories in the time I spent in the BtVS fandom, and one aspect of that pairing always appealed: when Spike and Xander acted like themselves. I never cared for submissive Xander, nor did I like OOC Spike. This story was written just a few months ago, but it captures what I liked so much about S/X: sex with snark, and an awkwardly hot first time.

A "demons made them do it" story, the edge from the oh-so-in-character insults keeps it from being just another PWP clichefic. But it does work as porn too. *g*
