Why this must be read:I have a particular fondness for stories which could work as episodes with minimal adaptation, or stories which give us insight into 'missing scenes'. Kriegspielen falls into the latter category. At the end of Series Two, we know that 'Liberator' is alone in holding off an alien invasion, although help is on the way (and Avon's 'Fire!' is still the best ending of any TV series that I have ever seen; twenty years on I remember crying 'No!' at the television in frustration.) In the opening minutes of Series Three we see the toll this has taken on Liberator and her crew. What happened in between?
In Kriegspielen, Neil Faulkner shows us precisely this, as told from Cally's point of view. Tensions build up, and morale flags, as the crew of the Liberator hold their position up to and beyond the point of exhaustion. And the situation is exacerbated when the Liberator takes a group of refugees on board...
The flat narrative style is perfect for showing Cally's exhaustion, and that of the rest of the crew. As usual with Blake's Seven fic, the dialogue is crisp and, at times, sparkling. Neil has a real flair for finding the voice of each of his characters. Go ahead and read it - you won't be disappointed!
