Why this must be read:

Since I missed the crossover day, I'm just going to rec this a little late.

This story combines two of my favorite things: Hannibal Lecter and CSI. The team comes to find out Grissom is not who he says. He also gets visit from not one but two of the ones that got away.

The story also gives a great back story to Grissom and a look at possibly why he acts the way he does.

Author's Note/Warnings: Non-consensual moments, Violence, Crossover, spoilers for season 2

12:39 am Half Dreams May Dream by [livejournal.com profile] ailei, NC-17
Fandom: CSI
Pairing: Gil/Nick
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ailei
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

The season finale of CSI spawned a whole crop of excellent post-episodic fic. The finale was ripe with bugs and angst and slash. A big Thanks goes out to Quentin Tarantino for confirming in the minds of many that Gil and Nick belong together.

Although this was not [livejournal.com profile] ailei's first story, it was her first CSI fic. Way to hit a home run on the first pitch. This story is best described by a very wise person as 'Oh my GOD this is hot and dark and terrible and sweet and uplifting and HOT, all at once.' (Thanks for the quote, Em.)

This is easily one of the best post-ep stories ever.

01:35 am Per Manum by Andraste (PG-13)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: None really
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] andrastewhite
Author Website: Blue Shades
Why this must be read:

What I love about Per Manum is that is offers up substantial backstory on Lt. Larell -- a Peacekeeper with ties to Crais who was seen in Into the Lion's Den -- in such a well-drawn way that it fills out Larell and gives her scenes with Crais even more poignancy after the fact. Farscape ficdom is full of character pieces on the main cast, but not nearly enough on minor characters. Give it a read, you'll enjoy it.

02:46 am Magic, Intimate, Routine, by Derry (18+)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Bart (Kid Flash) / Roy (Arsenal)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] derryderrydown
Author Website: Gildy Clobber
Why this must be read: Well, things have been known to get weird in the DC-verse. Things we would take for granted are prone to change. The Sky isn't always blue, water isn't always wet. Nevertheless, the DC-verse has a few inalterable certitudes, truisms you can always count, and this is one: Roy's a slut. Mind you, he's a very lovable person, and a stand up guy. But, yes, humongous slut, so enjoy the hawt sex, it's in character, if not canon.

I also love this fic because it points out a very weird issue that's specific to the DC-Verse: accelerated growth. If a kid (like Bart, who grew up in subjective time) is physically and mentally seventeen, but actually four, just how weird is it to have sex with him?

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] basingstoke
Author Website: http://www.ravenswing.com/~bas/
Why this must be read: The thing about the DCU is that while it is full of superheroes, not everyone wears spandex. Some people in it are a whole lot darker and creepier than anything anyone would expect. And occasionally, this darker side interacts with the lighter one.

John Constantine, hero of Hellblazer, is a trickster and a magician, the zeitgeist of London in the 80s. His title is darkdarkdark, and oddly visceral, and so's the character. Here's a little ficlet that works perfectly as a tiny appetizer for the shifty bastard that is Conjob, and that's why I love it.

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Tim (Robin III) / Kon (Superboy)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] buggery
Author Website: hir LJ's memories
Why this must be read: Tim and Kon have such an OTP vibe attached to them that it wouldn't do for me to let this month go by without reccing them at least once.

This short fic will steam up your glasses (for those of you who wear them), and it's dead on in terms of character voices. Plus, I have to say that I read a lot of slash, and it's the only fic that I know of that involves semi-public daytime sex on top of a church. =)

Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hth_the_first
Author Website: Hth's site

Why this must be read:
Here's a depressing future fic, but it's a must-read in that "hurts so good" category. This feels like a possible future, albeit not one I want to occur. I like how Chloe is portrayed, too, so very much a real girl.

04:45 pm The Pragmatist by Nifra Idril (PG-13)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nifra_idril
Author Website: neon nights

Why this must be read:
I'll end my month of recs on a slightly more hopeful note. In this future fic, Nifra captures some essentially Clark-and-Lex emotions here--that push/pull, caution laced with desire, action with misgivings. This is quintessential angsty Clex love, in which the pleasure is equaled by the pain. The psychodynamic between the two strikes me as fear-based, and lack of trust seems like the biggest barrier to long-term happiness for them.
"I don't trust you," you tell him.
"You probably can't trust me," he says to you, putting a cap on the pen between this thick fingers and setting it aside. "I probably can't trust you. I'm still here, though."

08:56 pm The Misadventures of Renfield Turnbull, Canadian Private Eye by Shade (R)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] daughtershade
Author Website: Shade's Corner
Why this must be read:

I admit I am one of those people who loves crossovers, AUs, ARs and any of that cracktastic fun. So this AU murder mystery where Turnbull is a 1950s private investigator whose partner Fraser has recently died suspiciously and Ray Kowalski is the troublesome blond bombshell that comes to him for help is right up my alley. The rest of the cast also make appearances and even if they are all switched up job-wise except Ray Vecchio, they all maintain some nugget of their show personality.

I especially like how the story is told from Turnbull's point of view. It gives it a whimsical, earnest air that works really well in twisting the noir setting into something with the same feel as the show. And the author really brings Turnbull to life. Although he is as accident-prone and cleaning-obsessed as he is on the show, you easily fall into understanding why he is this way and rooting for him to solve the case.

The only reason I haven’t closed up shop is because I can’t get the nerve up to fire Frannie. )

11:26 pm Contraction And Expansion by Illman (PG)
Title: Contraction and Expansion
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: hrm...not really. Sheppard/Weir ust maybe?
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] illman
Author Website: not that I could see
Why this must be read:

So Illman got a challenge to write Sheppard/Weir pre-series. During the time John was playing ferryman and flying people to and from the Ancient Outpost in Antarctica. It could be friendship, could be more. What we got was a fantastic look inside Elizabeth's head and a hint of how things were going on before they left. It's a perfect 'ships in the night' style story which was a treat to read.

Why this must be read:

It's the Atlantis/SG1 crossover that isn't and still is and is absolutely the one we all want to see without knowing we want to see it. It's an absolute blast and I couldn't let the month pass without sneaking this one in it's just...it's fantastic. Reading it, it's a guilty pleasure fic. There are some S2 spoilers I think but it's for the most part, an AU so enjoy! It's well worth the read.

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser / Ray Kowalski
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] celtiknot
Author Website: Celtiknot's LJ Icons
Why this must be read:

This is a short, fun fic that was an entry in the 'It's A Dog's Life' challenge over at the [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction community. It is a literal day in the life as experienced by Dief inspired by Patricia Finney's I, Jack. Seeing the due South world through a dog's eyes is fun and sometimes confusing. I love how the author limits Dief's way of explaining the world only to the terms he would know and makes smell more important to Dief's world than ours. Anyway, I think this is better experienced than described, so the short quote below expresses the whimsy of this fic and shows why you should take the time to read it better than any additional words I could find:

And he putter-putters around, runs the water in the tiny room, sends the water away, grumbles to his self, puts on the fake-fur pieces and the hard paws and FINALLY WE GO OUT! )
