Fandom: Queer as Folk US
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] soundczech (personal)/[livejournal.com profile] themagichour (fic journal)
Author's Website: blatant narcissism
Pairing: Brian/Justin
Why this must be read:

First, this story is an AU. Not an uncommon premise in this fandom, but it's rarely done as well as it is here. Spinning off from episode 121, this story takes on what might have happened if Brian had gone to New York and what happens when Justin runs into him six years later in a club. Both of them older now and wiser (sort of), they begin to form a friendship that surprises them both. The characterizations here are excellent, with a Justin and Brian that seem like real people, not the caricatures that they so frequently end up in AU fic. A truly gorgeous story and one of my personal favorites.

12:03 pm Shines Like Hope by Celli Lane (PG)
Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] freedomfry, and I'll be your driver through the Lord of the Rings fandom this month. I tend to read mostly in the World of Men, heavy on the Rohirrim, but for you I'll also be exploring hobbits, elves, and, most importantly, Warrior Bonding Through Slash.

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGS
Pairing: Legolas/Aragorn
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] celli
Author Website: Fanfic 101
Why this must be read:

When my computer died a few months back, taking with it the dozens of stories I had bookmarked in my web browser (*sob*), this fic was one of the first I looked for again. I've read it a dozen times and love it more each time.

Celli described the fic as the "missing scenes from the first two films: Legolas learns about death, and hope, and his heart's desire." She doesn't mention her wonderful way with words, or the beautiful flow the story has, so I'll do it for her.

01:26 pm Roswitha by quercus (R)
Fandom: X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Skinner
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: http://slashcity.org/quercus/
Why this must be read:

I was surprised to see that there weren't any quercus reccs in this fandom. I'm thrilled to be the first.

Roswitha is a unique take on what the X-Files are looking for. It takes Mulder, Skinner and Scully through awakening life changes and new awareness of themselves and each other. It has wonderful original characters. It must be read because it is so different from most of the X-Files fic I've read.

Also, it is set in northern California, near where I'm from, and she does a wonderful job describing the area and the overall feel of the area.

04:14 pm Stigma by Rhipodon Society (G)
Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] gardendoor and I'll be pimping for Sentinel this month. Which is actually REALLY hard, because trying to choose a mere 12 stories out of my favorites list, which just hit 1000 stories, is torture. So, for this month I decided I'm going to try and rec things you've probably never heard of, but should have. Slash, Gen, whatever, so long as it's great and tends to fall under the radar.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: None
Author Website: The Rhipodon Society
Why this must be read:

Stigma is a short, chewy poem, and I think it sums up the relationship between Jim and Blair better than anything out there. I have a low tolerance for poetry in general, but man, I have to make an exception for this one.

05:04 pm The Blood on Their Black Hands, by ijemanja (PG13)

Fandom: NOIR
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ijemanja
Author’s Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

We’re benefiting from some lucky timing with this rec: ijemanja started posting her Noir fics just days before I got the go ahead to begin posting recs at Crack Van.

This fic takes a look at the series’ four principal characters (Mireille, Kirika, Chloe, and Altena) in the years set before the series. We are allowed a glimpse of an important moment of each of these women’s lives--a moment that informs the characters that are slowly explored in the series itself.

Guns are heavy - no one can hold such a stance indefinitely.

That's another thing her uncle always says, but now he is silent. He is letting her make the choice, she knows. But this isn't a choice for her - at least, it doesn't feel like one.

This man will die by her hands, or another's - her uncle's probably, if she lets her hands drop. There is no negotiation to be made, no clemency to be granted, not by her or anyone. It almost doesn't matter what he's done, at this point. And everyone dies in the end, anyway. That isn't a choice, either, but a matter for fate to decide.

She lets the unrest in her mind subside, she lets the weight on her shoulders dissipate to nothing. She lets the decision fly out of her hands, and the man falls from his chair onto the grass.

It was a choice, after all, she realises.

05:11 pm Paris Lights, by ijemanja (PG)
Fandom: NOIR
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ijemanja
Author’s Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

If you’re curious about Noir, but worried about all the spoilers I warned about, this is the perfect story for you. Set after the first episode, this story looks at Kirika, and Mireille, and what it means not to know who you are--to hardly remember anything at all.

I have a difficult time getting into Kirika’s head, but ijemanja manages the character wonderfully.

Outside, the streets of Paris go by in a blur of colour and sounds. Buildings and people and traffic - it's the middle of the day, but it doesn't feel like it.

Kirika yawns and rests her head against the window of the taxi.

    'Jetlag, huh?' Mireille says.

Is this jetlag? She doesn't know - she has no frame of reference by which to judge.

Is she used to flying? Has she ever flown before at all?

It's been months. She still hasn't quite got the hang of asking herself endless questions, and coming up with nothing.

Fandom: NOIR
Pairing: Mild Mireille/Kirika
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thawrecka
Author’s Website: Shards of Glass
Why this must be read:

Mireille and Kirika, in brief, post-series. Quiet, comfortable, and as close to peaceful as either woman will ever get. I love the small touches in this fic, and how this domestic scene contrasts with all the hardships which brought Mireille and Kirika to this point.

(As a side note, [livejournal.com profile] thawrecka also makes some very pretty Noir icons, which can be found at her site).

07:14 pm Reunited, And It Don't Feel So Good by Riley Cannon (R)
Hey, I'm Erin and I'll be the Oz driver for September - wheeeee!!! I'm a total B/K shipper, but I do enjoy reading other pairings and I'll try to rec some of those as well for those of you who don't feel the B/K love as strongly as some of us. But for now, I couldn't call myself Riley Cannon's fangirl if I didn't rec one of her fics first! :)

Fandom: OZ
Pairing: Beecher/Keller
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rileyc
Author Website: Unit B Archive (Her personal website is pretty much defunct).
Why this must be read:

This is the way that pesky 'Keller on Death Row' storyline should have played out - not only is it a realistic portrayal of B/K, but it leaves us with a bittersweet sense of hope. It also looks at some other characters and storylines instead of focusing on just B/K, but without at all detracting from the main story. And for lovers of Keller-Angst (like me!) there is an abundance of it in this fic, reminding us of Keller's humanity, and the inherent vulnerability that co-exists with his darker side.

08:01 pm Taste of Apples/Sacrifical Drift by Auburn (R)
Hello all. I'm Sin and I'm going to be your SGA driver for the month. It's a mixed bag of stories -- length, formats, writing styles -- that I plan on reccing, but they all have one thing in common. It's all slash, all the time, this September.

There's been a quite a trend in SGA fandom to try and dictate what constitutes good characterisation and what doesn't. So, actually, yeah, not so much different from any other fandom in that regard but the scale on which it's been done here is a little mind blowing.

And then there's the meta. We do it. A lot.

My advice? If you're new to the fandom ignore all that and concentrate on the fic, because there are some truly amazing stories out there. These are some of my favourites, so if you're interested, take the time and have a read, then decide for yourself what works or doesn't work for you.

Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] auburnnothenna
Author Website: Allusions
Why this must be read:

Taste of Apples started as a gen team piece that was creepy, truly alien and sucked you in until all you wanted was for it to go on and on. With Sacrifical Drift, it retrospectively changed into pre-slash as the ramifications of the incident in Apples brought Sheppard and McKay together. But that isn't the only change that results.

These two stories are an wonderful look at the team dynamic between Sheppard, McKay, Teyla and Ford. It's something that I really wish there was more of because the give and take between them all is so very interesting, but it tends to get ignored in favour of concentrating on the Sheppard/McKayness [or other pairings] of it all.

With these stories, Auburn blends it all together until it's seamless and you couldn't possibly have one without the other.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] nickeyb and I will be driving the Lost van for this month. Although primarily a Charlie fan, I have tried to grab together a selection of fics that I hope will be a good cross-section of characters for the whole fandom. I've been collecting a little list for a while and I love them all - I hope you will too :)

Fandom: LOST
Pairing: None in particular
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gabby_silang
Author Website: designer (intelligence)
Why this must be read:

Jack's voice is so good in this, and in particular I think his discussion with Locke sums up their positions perfectly. But mostly I love the quiet feel and the flow, and then all the cleverness that sneaks in when you're not looking. It makes me like Jack, and dare I say it, even understand him a little. I read this when I'm feeling particularly exasperated with his pig-headedness, and it settles me right down.
