This entry for Multiverse 2005 is my favorite, of all the excellent stories there. It’s sharp and hard as a diamond, with characterization and dialogue that hook you from the very first word.

Title The Other Side of the Gate by Jemima (PG)
Pairing: none really (hint of Jack/Sam and Janeway/Chakotay)

Why this must be read:

Whether you're a fan of Voyager or Stargate or both, this story is for you. Unlike many crossovers, neither fandom or its characters are slighted, and the story can be appreciated on many levels. There's plot, intriguing technobabble (that nonetheless doesn't get carried away), snark, humor, action and great characterization and character interactions. The image of O'Neill et al mocking the Voyager 'redshirts' is one that will linger for a long time.

It's the fifteenth, and that means Crossovers!! A lot of fandoms have crossed over with Smallville - the show lends itself to crossover weirdness - but this one really is the strangest of all. *G*

Title: Context
Pairing: Clark/Lex, Lex/Justin, Clark/Lance
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] addictedkitten
Author Website: addicted
Why this must be read: I know nothing about Popslash beyond having heard of N*SYNC and having a vague idea who the people are. But that doesn't take away one bit from the fact that this story is hilarious. It's fun and smutty and outrageously plausible. The author has self-described it as: "blowjobs on jaguars and kisses in kitchens: these are a few of my favorite things." With a lead up like that, how can you not want to read it?

Title: A Picnic Lunch in the Garden of Eden, The Angel of the North and And On the Seventh Day by kraken wakes
Pairing: Billy/Dom
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kraken_writes
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

I'm counting this as my crossover rec, even though it's not *quite* a crossover (so if that's a problem, let me know and I'll change my rec). In this three-part fic, Dom is the demon who inspired Gaiman and Pratchett to write Good Omens. It's uproariously funny (especially the scene where angel!Bill and demon!Dom play pub trivia with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse), and the author has done a remarkable job emulating the style of Gaiman and Pratchett, showcasing a dry wit that cleverly conceals the real emotions between the angel and the demon. Watching Dom and Billy interact from the beginning of humanity until present day is, at turns, heart-wrenching and hysterical (the bit about Episode One cracks me up). But then Billy vanishes, called to Upstairs, and when he returns, they both have to deal with the consequences.

"Guys," Lucifer nodded at them. He had a distinctly American accent. Some time in the nineteen twenties Dom had been excessively drunk and had persuaded Lucifer to go to America with him on the grounds that Gabriel was getting above himself and was smugly enforcing prohibition. The gangsters had had a very bad effect on Lucifer (which was ironic because usually, that kind of thing went the other way around but then Lucifer didn't really inhabit the same world as everyone else. Something to do with hearing the celestial harmonies at a certain pitch, Dom claimed but then Dom tended to be full of crap).

Dom and Billy waved at the theoretical Prince of Darkness and took their usual table. As ever, Billy needed a very large drink to get over Dom's driving. (NB: Leeds to London takes about four or five hours on the motorway. Dom wasn't very good at reading maps or understanding scale and thought it should only take twenty minutes so it invariably did only take twenty minutes. Billy, on the other hand, could read maps and understood scale to boot and generally got out of Dom's car feeling like his eyeballs were inserted the wrong way around).

Title: The Language of Hieroglyphs
Pairing: JC Chasez/Bill Weasley
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] arsenicjade
Author Website Arsenic Jade: Writing
Why this must be read:

If the idea of a popslash/harry potter crossover doesn't grab you, maybe the really good writing and the completely adorable JC will make you more sympathetic. I really love this story. The writing is, as I mentioned, excellent and really funny as well. JC goes on vacation to Egypt and sees a lot more than he'd planned:

A human that JC hadn't previously noticed spun toward him quickly, obviously startled, the thin piece of wood in his right hand shooting sparks. He muttered several words in quick succession that JC didn't understand. He was dirt-smudged, decked out in comfortable excavation type clothes, with red hair pulled back into a messy ponytail and an earring that was hot enough to make JC rethink his utter terror of needles. JC held out a hand. "JC Chasez. You an archeology team, or something?"

The human transferred the stick into his sleeve and reached out to shake JC's hand. "Bill Weasley. Or something."

Pairing: none
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: Fics at Daire’s Fanfic Refuge
Why this must be read:

Yes, it’s MacNair again. And with the most wonderful combination ever: Connor (of course) plus a certain attitude-wielding, claw-wearing mutant: Logan. An alley, a Quickening and a bar, plus two of the broodiest, hottest men ever played on screen.

Why this must be read:

Some of you may have realized I’m also driving the Highlander Van this month. So for this Cross-Over Day, I thought it would be fun to rec a story that linked both of my vans!

While in Rome, Buffy dated the Inmortal. This particular story was just begging to be written. Nestra did it perfectly.

Title: Remember Me by Mort
Pairing(s): Mulder/Caine, Scully/Duquesne, Mulder/Skinner
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Webside: http://morts-lair.com/

Why this must be read:

I love this mix of characters and the way it affects each of them. This is a new author to me, and I'm hooked. Mort has the character voices down beautifully. That really makes for a good read.

08:54 pm Due South/Red Green (no rating given...maybe PG/PG-13)
Title: American Standard
Pairing: A tiny bit of Maggie/Ray K.
Author on LJ:
Author Website: Anne Madison's Home on the Web
Why this must be read:

First of all, it's hilarious. It's probably helpful if you've seen Red Green in order to get some of the inside jokes. Vecchio and Fraser go undercover to find the Ronzoni brothers at Possum Lake. However, they start seeing the townspeople behaving rather oddly. It's just a really fun story with great characterizations from both shows.

Why this must be read:

I wouldn't never have believed this pairing could ever work. Seriously. Janet/Seven, are you kidding me?! But in this fic, it really does work. I believe it. Janet is just perfectly out of time, and confused, and still recognisable. Amazing.

Title: Luck of the Draw by Kikkimax
Fandom: OZ
Pairing: No real pairings, but Stabler, Keller, Beecher and Benson all make an appearance and some kissing/groping does occur.
Author on LJ: ???
Author Website: Kikki's Multi-fandom Fiction
Why this must be read:

Because Kikki has captured the characters from both shows as perfectly as a fanfic writer could ever hope to - her Stabler and Keller in particular are spot on. This is also a fic that takes the old cliche of 'long lost twins' and actually makes it work realistically. Keller and Stabler are forced to temporarily trade places and dangerous hijinks ensue - the scenes with Beecher and Stabler-pretending-to-be-Keller are particularly wonderful, but the real highlights are the two brothers getting to know and love one another. A lovely read and probably the best Oz/SVU crossover out there. There are admittedly some factual mistakes concerning minor characters, but it doesn't detract from the story at all

Title: Quicksand by Thamiris
Pairing: Clark/Remus, Remus/Clark/Lex, Lex/Clark, implied Remus/Sirius
Author on LJ: Thamiris' Glossolalia
Author Website: Odysseys and Ecstasy
Why this must be read:

Thamiris' summary starts, "Lex boards the plane with a single suitcase and a hundred ugly adjectives." Like all of her stories "Quicksand" is a literary tour de force, full of brilliant imagery, perfect characterizations, and more pathos than one billionaire playboy ought to be allowed. Arriving at the town from which Clark addressed his last postcard, the realization of Lex's worst fears appear in the form of one tired, grief-sore werewolf and a college-bound Clark who grew tired of waiting for Lex to be ready for him. These three emotional minefields in one little house hotly ache in all the right ways. Remus and Clark find ideal compliments in each other's unique brand of desperation, but while they temper each others' desires temporarily, neither can be what the other truly needs and Lex painfully, beautifully, and inevitably comes between them, sometimes quite literally. Excellent post OotP, post SV High look at where milestones in these characters' emotional lives may leave them.
