Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Dana Scully/Alex Krycek Author on LJ: 3janeAuthor Website: JaneficWhy this must be read:As with the previously recced "Deny Nothing" we have Scully and Krycek and kidnapping, only this time it is Scully who has been kidnapped, with Krycek doing the rescuing (more or less). If Rivka T's Scully and Krycek are all sharp edges and banter, Jane St. Clair's have both been worn to greater sympathy by life. Like most road trip fiction, on and off screen, this story is more about the evolution of characters and relationships than it is about place or plot. ( A night on the road. )Half a World Away

Fandom: X-FILES Pairing: Dana Scully/Alex Krycek, Fox Mulder/Alex Krycek Author on LJ: se_parsonsAuthor Website: Unknown, other stories can be found here. Warnings Rape/non-con Why this must be read:Because there are too few stories with an unreliable and self-deluding Krycek as narrator, especially one as perceptive about Mulder and Scully as this version is. This Krycek, while different from what one usually finds in fan fiction (misunderstood triple agent or evil incarnate), is a very believable extrapolation from canon. This story is in keeping with the previous two posts this story involves Krycek and Scully and kidnapping, but this time it's Krycek who's doing the kidnapping, and we have Mulder around for the whole time (if not always conscious). And if for no other reason it should be read for the opening. ( The opening )Prone and its sequels Unnatural Tendencies and Substitutes.

There's a theme of newspaper reports that I'm going for in some of my recs this week. And they're gen, too;) Fandom: STARSKY/HUTCH Pairing: Starsky and Hutch Why this must be read: First of all, it's older Starsky and Hutch. That's my one true love right there. Secondly, it's gen that's true to canon. In that I mean, it portrays the guys at the level of comfort and intimacy that we saw on screen. A reporter did a human interest story about Starsky and Hutch and might have gotten the wrong impression about the pair. Yes, they live together and act like an old married couple, but they're not together as a couple. The outside world isn't in on that little tidbit of truth, so the reporter calls it like he sees it. When the article comes out, and Starsky gets to reading it, the miscommunication comes to light. "They would not specify exactly what year they became life partners.”
“What the hell?” muttered Starsky, his smile disappearing.
Hutch discovered a sudden fascination with the contents of his coffee mug.
“We were partners before we were partners, if you get my drift,” says Dave with a twinkle in his eye.
Ken interrupts him. “Oh, not this story again!”
Dave leans close to me, and in an exaggerated whisper says, “I was the only one who could put up with him then, too.”
Ken points his index finger at Dave. “I’ll have you know, you’re not the easiest person to live with!”This is a wonderful glimpse into their futures, still going at each other and loving each other as only they can. Whether they have sex or not, the love is still the same. Headline News

Another newspaper story, but this time the possibility of a future relationship is left open. Fandom: STARSKY/HUTCH Pairing: Starsky and Hutch Why this must be read: An LA reporter is doing a piece on the human side of cops. Lucky for him, he got to ride with Starsky and Hutch. What is so special about this story, aside from the fact that it's true to canon with the level of intimacy the partners have, is that it leaves open and vague the true nature of their relationship. Starsky and Hutch may or may not be together sexually, but it's left open for the reader to decide. And it's set in the 3rd season, which means even if they aren't together already there's a big possibility that they're headed that way. I awoke with a start a couple hours later, a crick in my neck and a piece of paper jabbing my earlobe. Up front, Hutchinson had set aside the magazine. True to his prediction, Starsky's head had migrated into his partner's lap. The blond detective stared intently out into the darkness. Despite his earlier threats, he had made no obvious move to prevent Starsky's new position. Instead his hand rested softly on his partner's upper arm, his long, lithe fingers drawing gentle circles on the shirt sleeve. I'm not even sure he was aware of doing it.And since this is an outsider perspective, the reporter is not going to get the entire story. He hears the names of Terri and Elmo, but doesn't know the weight of such matters. He does know that they're important in the lives of those he's watching. And he comes to understand the unique relationship that exists between these two men. It's a wonder to watch. The Rest of the Story

Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS Pairing: Sheppard/McKay Author on LJ: mmmchelle Author Website: Chelle's NightstandWhy this must be read:This is the moving story of John and Rodney dealing with the aftermath of sexual violence. It's an absorbing, heart wrenching depiction of the healing process, and extremely honest in it's emotions. Much pain and anger accompanies the healing. There's no easy fix, love and sex does not cure all, yet there is hope and comfort and reaching out as their relationship progresses. The issues are dealt with in a sensitive and thoughtful manner, something that is not often found in fanfiction. (FYI, there are no explicit descriptions of the assault.) Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS Pairing: Sheppard/McKay Author on LJ: saffronhouse Author Website: Good Morning, SunshineWhy this should be read:This should be read because Martha writes beautiful stories, eerie and atmospheric. This one is of a mission gone very, very wrong. It's disturbing and lovely all at the same time. ( Read an excerpt )Read Moka

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Sirius/Remus Author on LJ: musesfoolAuthor Website: AchromaticWhy this must be read:This is set just before and during Order of the Phoenix, and it's one of the best Sirius/Remus reunions I have ever read. It's a wonderful use of Sirius's point-of-view. I think it captures Sirius's personality perfectly; his life is difficult and limited and sad but he is still so alive. The vivid descriptions and haunting emotions make this a moving and absorbing read. The Hush of Waiting

Fandom: Due South Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski Author on LJ: nifra_idrilAuthor Website: Illuminated TextWhy this must be read:Benton Fraser is the stuff of fantasies, and Ray Kowalski has a very active imagination. Nifra Idril gives us a guided tour of Ray's imagination and it's a really, really nice trip. This is an incredibly sensual story; the sound, the feel, the taste of Ray's fantasy is almost tangible and the rhythm of Ray's internal voice is note-perfect. Passer on the Street

Fandom: Due South Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Vecchio Author on lj: merryishAuthor website: Any Road HomeWhy this must be read:In any other fandom it's aliens who make them do it, but things are never that simple around Benton Fraser. Merry blends hilarious dialogue and terrific characterizations with a screwball plot that captures the spirit of some of the most wonderfully surreal Due South episodes. It's the fabulous dialogue in particular that brings me back to this story again and again. It's a perfect balance of Ray's love for and complete exasperated frustration with Fraser.
