01:17 am Five Things That Never Happened to Kira Nerys by Rocky (PG-13)
Hello, I'm [livejournal.com profile] netgirl_y2k and I'll be reccing in the Star Trek franchise this month. Please remain calm.

Fandom: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Pairing: none, gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rocky_t
Author Website: Rocky's road to Voyager
Why this must be read:

I'm a big fan of Kira fic and of the Five Things genre and this fic is a fantastic example of both. It is a series of five very different AUs but the thing that binds them all together is the Kira characterisation, which constantly rings true to the show. In addition to Kira's truly excellent characterisation Rocky has a brilliant grasp of the voices of all the other DS9 characters, even the ones that are only referred to in passing ring true.

I especially recommend the fifth AU, it's a work of pure genius :-)

09:12 am His Body A Boat by Romany (R)
Hey, I'm [livejournal.com profile] entrenous88, and it will be my pleasure to rec some great fic in the Angel fandom for you this month. I've got a variety of stories to lead you to (het, gen, and slash, some angsty, some humorous), so let's get started. *revs the van and listens to the engine purr*

Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Spike/Angel
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] romanyg
Author Website: Not Exactly Blood and Roses
Why this must be read:

A study in gaps and silences, this story brings the reader through twelve 100-word drabbles, brief moments in the changing relationship between Spike and Angel during a period of unspeakable grief. Spike continually stumbles over and butts against Angel's sorrow at losing his son without ever truly understanding what happened. Still, as he acts the part of rebellious child or offers blind comfort, Spike circles around and ever closer to the points of loss, responding and guiding the only way he knows how, by giving himself to Angel.

Romany's Angel and Spike are real vampires -- there's blood, harsh and startling violence, and the weight of a long history coming to bear on sparse and stunning glimpses into the process of healing.

01:19 pm Afflection Overview
If you've ever read any interviews or articles featuring Ben Affleck or Matt Damon, you will no doubt know that they are buddies. It tends to get mentioned a lot, mainly because they became famous together when they wrote the script for Good Will Hunting.

01:26 pm Near Death Experience by Lassiter (PG-13)
Fandom: AFFLECTION
Pairing: None
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lassiterfics
Author Website: None
Why this must be read: I've decided to begin with Lassiter's lovely gen story, because it embodies so many of the things I love about this fandom. "Near Death Experience" is a slice of life, with a dead-on feeling of verisimilitude: the voices are wonderful, there are moments of wit, the background of filming and being actors is there without becoming fake or forced, and the overall feeling is one of everyday love.

06:06 pm you're the bluest light by passionflows (PG13)
Fandom: VERONICA MARS
Pairing: Duncan/Veronica
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] passionflows
Author Website: none, as far as I can tell.
Why this must be read:

This story unfolds in a dreamy sort of way, as do all the author's fic. It has a beautiful Duncan characterization, and it leaves you with a sad but hopeful feeling. Hopeful that these tragic kids can finally have a better ending.

Veronica drinks some of her iced tea.

“How was Cuba?” she asks, and he’s startled by the sudden change in topic. Cuba.

“. . . hot,” he says. “Communist.”

Veronica tries to stifle a snort and fails.

“I think I got that part,” she says, sounding almost glib, and Duncan supposes he’ll have to embrace this change in her tone unless he wants to break down sobbing like a baby.

08:35 pm with all the love that never occured between us by kel (R)
Alright! I'm [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] and I'll be driving the QAF US van for the month of March. I'm a Brian/Michael shipper with a soft spot for rare pairings and gen fic. So that's what you'll be seeing from me. Hopefully there will be a little something for everyone. So let's get started.

Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK US
Pairing: Brian/Michael (unrequited)
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: Obsessive Tendencies
Why this must be read:

The fic is very much in line with how the show turned out, in terms of Michael's development. And I do love this fic, despite my shipping tendencies. It's the quiet angst that gets me every time. It's a story where the ending doesn't have to be happy, and love doesn't have to be requited because that's what's realistic. Life doesn't work the way Michael expected it to and he learns to accept that. And maybe it's better for him that he does.

10:34 pm Hallowed Fate (Twilight Tales) by Eresse - NC17
Fandom: Lord of the Rings
Pairings: Elladan/Imrahil (main), Legolas/Elrohir
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eresse21
Author Website: Stories can be found on Of Elves and Men and Aff.net
Why this must be read:
If only for the pairing! I find it most lovely, but then again I am at times strange like that.
Eresse writes book canon, but her elves are far from pure. They have feelings and stories to tell and well lots of good, mind-melting sex.
I think she fills one of the voids out there as to what happened after the end of war in Middle Earth when the Elves start to leave.
Her writing style has a lot of flourish and depth of detail that I find difficult to find often, especially when accompanied by a good plot, great characters (who do not stray into OOCishness) and did I mention the great sex? :)

This story is part of a great arc called Twilight Tales, the stories are some times connected and some times not, Hallowed Fate can be read on it's own, since it's one of the first. Eresse is mostly filling spots left open by her previous great arc in this (if you call stories that some times are bigger than 400 kb "filling a spot").

11:41 pm Blame it on Ray-Oh! by L.A. Scotian (NC-17)
I have not to introduce me this time; I am still the pesky Bodie/Cowley lover: the one and the same. But I must reassure you at once; as soon as I'll have put on display the three or four Cowley centered stories I've still in stock, I'll come back to a more classic choice. To say all, I had completely forgotten February was a 28 days month! That's the reason why I asked for the permission to stay a little more, to have enough time to flog my stuff (Anyway there was no volunteer for this fandom this month, so you really have lost nothing).

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Cowley/Doyle (yes, yes!)
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Unknown

Why this must be read:

Mostly because after so many (not enough to my taste) stories pairing Bodie/Cowley, it was only fair to award a place to the symmetric pairing Doyle/Cowley. Moreover I know a few eccentrics (!!!) in lJ land and "Pros" lists who don't hide their bent.

Though L.A. Scotian is obviously another avatar of M. Fae Glasgow, the present story can hardly be taken as the counterpart or the equivalent for C/D of what Step We Gaily was to B/C. No need for me to write an eloquent plea in order to thwart a controversy about Cowley's character. Not that this Cowley were anyhow better than the former one; he is much worse! But he is also innocuously weird (as well as queer), not in character at all and not pretending to be, and more funny than disturbing.

To be more precise, it's a totally AU story, where Doyle is a rent boy and where the controller of CI5 let his lewd thoughts overcome his usually more lucid mind. As ever, M Fae Glasgow shows her unsuperable talent in describing lust and inner sexual turmoil. I looked for examples but couldn't choose any: I should have quoted half of the story! As for the psychological insights, they are as cruelly true as they are sharply delineated.

There is little more to add; as always with this author, whose style is so personal and recognizable, this short piece of writing is perfectly neat and cleverly done, though much lighter than most of her other works.

Blame it on Ray-Oh!
