03:08 pm The Company You Keep by Maygra (G)
This week I'll be recc'ing all gen stories.

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: N/A
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] maygra
Author Website: Maygra's Musings
Why this must be read: It was really hard to decide which of Maygra's many wonderful stories to recommend, but I finally had to go with my heart and choose this one. There's a ghost haunting Lewiston, and every so often someone vanishes, never to be seen again. Sam's stopped having dreams, which seems good until he figures out what it means. When Sam is the next to disappear, Dean goes crazy trying to find him.

"The Company You Keep" is both a wonderful ghost story and a deeply touching study of the strength of family bonds, with some wonderful insight into Sam's psychic gift. It gets right to the heart of why we love these brothers so much.

Go read and give the author some love:

09:25 pm Under Construction by Velocity (NC-17)
Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK US
Pairing: Brian/Michael
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

Pre-series is my favorite genre of QAF fiction. Mostly because we learn so little through canon and it's nice to see some of the holes filled in. "Under Construction" starts with Brian's loft and how he made it his own. From there is spins into an AU history of a Brian/Michael romance, which hits all the right notes: realistic characterization, interesting plot and hot sex scenes. I wanted to rec the fic for its creativity and for the basic superiority of its writing. And because I just love it.

10:07 pm Walking with Dark Angels by C. D. Stewart (PG-13)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: C. D. Stewart's Homepage
Why this must be read:

Two hundred years ago an amoral scientist discovered how to genetically engineer Sentinels but not their necessary, empathic Guides. Now empaths are extremely valuable to all sorts of people.

Three powerful unbonded Sentinels. Three wild empaths. 'The Man', a shadowy user/abuser of the powerless. A far future universe with complex webs of wealth, power, and duty.

C.D. Stewart is one of the authors who uses concepts from Susan Foster's GDP universe, and then does it so much better. Writing in a deft, witty, almost conversational style, she lays out her tale with entertaining diversions into history, social structure, economics, gossip, and pointed observations on the numerous, finely-drawn characters. She explores the conflicts between civilized behavior and instinct, the almost multiple personality natures of Blair Sandburg - anthropologist, activist, wild empath - and the instinct driven Dark Guide and of Jim Ellison - intelligent, ethical human being - and the Dark Sentinel, who must have, protect, and control his Guide at any cost.

Most of all, she tells a compelling story. Once you get into this novel, you won't want to put it down.
