12:26 pm Schadenfreude by zahra (PG13)
Fandom: The OC
Pairing: Ryan/Seth
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hackthis
Author Website: dysfunctional (fanfiction by zahra)
Why this must be read:

In a lot of ways, [livejournal.com profile] hackthis and [livejournal.com profile] lalejandra made this fandom as vibrant as it was, back in the first season. Lots of their stuff has been recc'ed here, and I'd totally re-rec it all. This, however, isn't. Ryan centric; for a fandom whose central tenet seems to be Ryan angst, such storylines don't show up that often in fanfic.

A lesser man, someone not as jaded, would give up Seth as a lost cause just because he doesn’t know what he wants.Someone else, not-Ryan, could have decided that friendship and wife-beaters are no match for breasts and miniskirts.

02:08 pm Taking It Home by Speedbump (PG-13)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: John/Aeryn, Futurefic
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Unknown, archived on Red Beard's Archive
Why this must be read:

This is a wild and wooley AU that posits that John Crichton finally makes it home 11 years after he left. He is bruised, battered, maybe insane, but in command of a mixed crew. With Aeryn by his side and his children on board, he seeks an alliance with Earth to create a haven in space where he can finally be at peace. The lovingly drawn history of John and Aeryn and their family, as well as of his Earth family, friends, and what ensues when culture shock drives normal humans to the edge makes this story mesmerizing. There is politics, mystery, family life, love, violence, psychology, and enormous scope to John's journey home.

This story won a Sparky in 2002 for First Place in Best Alternate Universe/Future Fic.

02:15 pm a superhero by mojokitten (PG-13)
Fandom: QUEER AS FOLK US
Pairing: Hunter, Brian (gen)
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: fanfiction by mojokitten
Why this must be read:

It's hard to find good fic about Hunter. Mostly because no one bothers to write it. But what interests me about him as a character (in the show, and especially in this fic) are the parallels that can be drawn between him and Brian. This little glimpse into the inner workings of Hunter's mind is dark and intelligent; the ficlet also scores major points for capturing that hint of vulnerability under the bravado. It's just extremely well-written, characterized, etc. And any Hunter fans out there should definitely read it and marvel.

07:10 pm The Councils of Despair by Parhelion (R)
Fandom: VORKOSIGAN UNIVERSE
Pairings: Aral Vorkosigan/Simon Illyan; Aral/Cordelia
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Site Index--click on the Cirrus and Sundogs page

Why this must be read:
This is the only Aral/Illyan slash story that I know of, probably for the very good reason that it's not an easy task to get them together without ignoring their canon back stories and without twisting their characters beyond recognition. But Parhelion manages to make it believable, and it's a good "friendship" slash story.
Please note: mild spoilers for Shards of Honor.

07:14 pm Coming Home by Royce Day (PG)
Fandom: VORKOSIGAN UNIVERSE
Pairing: Canon pairings mentioned, but this is gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jeriendhal
Author Website: Royce Day's site

Why this must be read:
Warning: Mention of character death.
This Cordelia story has a melancholy tone befitting the plot: Cordleia prepares to leave Barrayar to return to Beta Colony after her husband's death. I particularly enjoyed the details and the character interactions in this simple but emotional story. Also, there's a hint of some plan Cordelia is hatching, and I like that she is keeping her secrets even from the reader.
