02:18 am Names by skripka (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: none; gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] skripka
Author website: along the rim; her NCIS fics are here.
Why this must be read:

My last rec of the month is my favorite; I saved the best for last. skripka is one of my favorite authors, in any fandom, and I'd recommend all her fic if I could because it really deserves to be read and savored. Alas, I had to limit myself to one--that's no reason you should!

I chose Names because there really isn't enough good genfic in NCIS, and this is a beautiful example of how it should be done. skripka takes everyone from Gibbs to Ducky to Kate and gives us a gorgeous insight into each of them. How we think of ourselves is vital to who we think we are; by showing us how these characters view themselves, she lets us be each of them. Seven characters, seven names, and seven jewels of ficlets. I cannot praise this highly enough.

03:01 am As It Should Be by Hybridbabe
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: As per the author's note respectfully withheld *grin*
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hybridbabe
Author Website: Author's works archived on http://www.terrafirmascapers.com
Why this must be read:

The one is a very interesting examination of the couple's relationship as seen through the woman's eyes. It is a nice little piece, getting into the character's head and her thoughts about not only herself, but about love and purpose as well.

Fandom: CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Pairing: Nick/Greg
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] x_sleeptodream
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Last rec of the month, and I wanted it to be a good one. This? A very, very nicely well done piece of work. It may be death fic, but it's handled in such a dark yet oh so sweet way, you can't help but love it, and tears may even make an appearance. The words she uses to describe the emotion put into these two boys after their bosses unfortunate death makes it all the more real. This was for the challenge 'Scars' at [livejournal.com profile] ngchallenge, and may be my favorite of them all. You should go to their memories, too, and read some of the other fics there - a bunch of them are excellent.

There is self-harm in this, but not in the way you would think of - just go and see. It's definitely worth your time. Trust me.

01:55 pm Liaisons by Cynatnite (NC-17)
Leaving my June theme of ambiguity for a moment, to highlight one of the more interesting offerings in SH slash...

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Hutch/Huggy, Hutch/Starsky
Author on LJ: cynatnite
Author Website: http://shslash.kassidyrae.com/fiction.html
Why this must be read:

What if it didn't start in the academy? Or after Sweet Revenge? Or after too many late-night stakeouts? What if it started with... Huggy?

This story offers an extremely realistic interpretation of a strange premise... it was Hutch and Huggy before it was Hutch and Starsky. I'm not normally into explicit slash, but some of these scenes had me sweating a bit.

Oh, and the writer manages to make Huggy sound pretty screwable (and that's saying something).

03:50 pm The Road to Nevada by Lamardeuse (NC-17)
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: Sheppard/McKay
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse
Author Website: When the World is Puddle-Wonderful
Why this must be read:

The last of my fiction recs for the month, this one spins romance, mystery, cannonball run, the Stargate universe, and pre-WWII America into one heck of an AU. Technically, I think John is a member of the lost generation, having lied about his age to fly during the war, coming out of it with a certain measure of wanderlust that keeps him always on the road.

Meanwhile, Rodney's an inventor working on a new generation of airplane, and he needs a new test pilot, his old one having vanished right before an important test. He hires John, who discovers the plane has been sabotaged. Other more sinister encounters await them back at Rodney's home, and the two of them end up on a frenetic cross-country trip to Nevada, with the fate of the world hanging in balance.

05:24 pm After such knowledge, by Dargie (NC-17)
Fandom: Higlander
Pairing: Joe/Methos
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] dargie
Website: Dargie's outpost
Why this must be read
I would've sworn I was more in Duncan/Methos than in any other pairing but I found another outstanding story based on Joe/Methos. Dargie had the excellent idea of posting all her HL fics on her fic lj. I love many of these, but "After such knowledge" is my favourite. It has that special atmosphere, that special sweetness mixed with excellent characterization, and that wonderful erotic mood I'm craving in HL stories.
Here again it's about grieving (Ritchie's death) and finding comfort in an old (!) friend's arms and, this time, discovering love just there. Wonderful hurt comfort and a multi-layered Methos who will please his fans. Joe is, as usual, great. I love Joe.

05:45 pm A Right Bastard by anglopollyanna (PG)
Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: N/A
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] anglopollyanna
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Sure, it's one of those ficlets about a totally random person that you don't remember from canon. Sure, it's very short, and there's no sex. Nevertheless, this is an compelling read -- [livejournal.com profile] anglopollyanna turns out some brilliant phrases. She conveys emotion in a compressed, masterly way, and this fic is just brimming with elements and detail to delight the Napoleonic War buff.

Thought-provoking stuff whether you're a fan of movie Edrington or book Edrington or no Edrington at all.

07:45 pm "The Best Man Affair" by C. W. Walker (R)
Fandom: The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon/various (het)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] st_crispins
Author Website: here

Why this must be read:

Despite the title, this is not a story about marriage. Anything but! Staying overnight in a brothel in Paris at the end of a successful operation, Napoleon is challenged by another guest to prove who is the best man. [livejournal.com profile] st_crispins handles a delicate subject with a deft touch and the story is light-hearted, clever and funny. Illya observes the 'duel' but does not participate, and using him as the narrative POV gives the story a necessary distance. I wasn't too sure about this one the first time I read it, but every time I re-read it, I like it more and more. Go and see for yourself!

11:44 pm The Thing by Alexis Gunn (NC-17)
I’ve had a great time driving the pick-up truck this month, and I’m ready to hand the keys over. Since I started with a sexy and funny story, it seems right that I end with one as well.

Here now -- aside from a couple of “cutesy” moments -- is a fun, sexy, little romp, with a first time premise that can’t be beat.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Lex’s Sentinel Slash Stories
Why this must be read:

Just helping out a friend in a jam… That’s one of the oldest tricks in the book for getting two guys in the sack. Here, Alexis Gunn throws a little anthropology our way, with Blair babysitting a tribal fertility artifact for a friend. Things get complicated when he gets curious about the item in question and decides to…uhm…try it on. Luckily, he’s got Jim for a friend and roommate; he’ll help him out…

This is the kind of thing that hooked you into anthropology in the first place, isn’t it, Chief? )

Someone claiming to be NetGo's legendary sai shows up - but Shindou knows he can't be... can he? Long fiction with a plot - terrific.
