Why this must be read:

Oh my goodness.  Go now and check out this fic written for the [livejournal.com profile] ncis_ficathon.  It's long and amazing and so good it hurts.

The situation has the potential to be a hell of a mess and Tony really likes his job with NCIS and doesn’t want to have to leave (again). It’s Gibbs, who’s about as touchy-feely as a slab of concrete and likely to do terrible things to Tony’s misguided heart and not because Tony’s a boy; it’s been proven that Gibbs is very happy to play with other boys, but because Gibbs has had three nasty divorces and also happens to be Tony’s boss--which complicates things a lot. Like a big lot.

Finally, Tony decides that being in love with Gibbs is sort of like shooting yourself in the foot; it’s sudden, unexpected and really--
really-- embarrassingly stupid because you so should not have been playing with your damn gun without the safety on in the first place.

Title: Dreams of Electric Sheep by [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] parrotfic
Why this must be read: Really, with two dark universes where people struggle with distinguishing humanoid robots from the humans around them, why wasn't this crossover written earlier? It's a brief but searing excursion into the psyches and psychologies of Sharon, Lee and Laura, coming to terms with the disappointments of finding Earth is the world of Decker's experience and not the safe haven they had presumed.

Why this must be read:  Not long ago, during an lj conversation about what constituted a Mary Sue, I offered up this story as a kind of anti-Mary Sue, featuring an OFC that didn't fall into the usual beautiful, tall, strong, magical, ancient, wise Immortal, blah, blah, blah.  Someone commented back that I was wrong (gasp!), that eventually Sadie, the witty, wry, rebellious, perpetually clueless, slightly overweight, semi-centarian OFC morphed into something that might be construed as a Mary Sue, so I went back and re-read The Whole Thing.  And my critic had a point, actually.  Sort of.  Towards the very end of this Toad's Wild Ride of a story, Sadie realizes she is just as special as all these tall, good-looking immortals she ends up bumming around with, but frankly she never loses her slightly idiotic charm.  Sadie bumbles and stumbles through a series of bizarre events - fires, beheadings, stabbings, etc., - commenting wryly on them all the while in a 'voice' that kept a near-constant grin on my face.  This long, involved, unlikely tale is full of adventures involving Methos and Duncan and Amanda and Richie and Joe, along with a half-dozen other fabulously memorable, entirely original characters, immortal and... otherwise.  So, if you want to have a good, long, satisfying chuckle, you must read this story.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Hints of Nine/Rose/Jack
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] saganamidreams
Author website: None

Why this must be read:

Between The Doctor Dances and Boom Town, the dynamic between the Doctor, Jack, and Rose changes radically; while this isn't the only fic that's been written about that period, it is, in my opinion, the best. It's messy, it's awkward, Jack finds himself entirely out of his depth, and everything about it just fits the OT3.

This is CJ and Toby, post-admin, and it's really all about the tenses. Perfectly structured for a sense of looking into the future, and liking (or not) what you see.

Title: A Million Light Years from Home by Victoria P.
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] musesfool
Author website: Achromatic
Why this must be read:

Because it's awesome. By turns funny and sad and hopeful. Sirius Black finds himself on Serenity, and all he wants is to get back home. I love it because it still feels like the crew of Serenity, even though it's told from Sirius's pov. There's lovely interaction between them all, especially between Mal and River, and the glimpses we see of Zoe are heartbreaking and true. The best thing, however, is the relationship between Sirius and River, who understand each other better than anyone else could, and there's a sense that, even if Sirius can't find his way back, he just might have a home right where he is.

An excerpt:

He still spends most of his time with River and Kaylee, trying to be helpful where he can. Kaylee gives him a rough sketch of each crewmember's background,
but when he presses for information about River, she clams up. The others all look tense when he asks -- Mal goes white around the mouth, Zoe's eyes harden,
and Jayne's hand rests on the butt of his gun -- and change the subject.

"Ask the right questions, maybe you'll get the right answer," River says. "Simon saved me." She cocks her head, brow furrowed in concentration. "You couldn't
save your brother. You didn't even try."

He'd had to tell them an abridged story of his life -- hit the high points, anyway -- before Mal would let him stay onboard, but hadn't mentioned Regulus
at all.

"Maybe he wasn't worth saving."

"Does that make you feel better?"

He doesn't say anything. Regulus wasn't the only brother he'd failed, just the first one.

11:50 pm The Lucifer Match by Gwyneth Rhys (R)
Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN ~ Old West
Pairing: Chris/Vin
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r
Author Website: Chez Gwyn
Why this must be read:

I came across The Lucifer Match early on which is both a show of good fortune and a water mark that left my expectations incredibly high. It's one of the few stories that I've come across that is so well written I forgot that I was reading fanfiction and simply got lost in the story telling.

It begins shortly after Ella has burned a swath through Chris's life and left him walking wounded, brittle and ashamed. As fire continues to haunt Chris, both he and Vin set about to restore their friendship and in the process discover another flame between them. The build up is slow and awkward and gains momentum only in fits and starts and is all the better for it. Gwyn has a great ear for the way they talk, slightly formal and blunt but always careful to pull their punches.
