12:07 am Sandman: An Overview
I have to apologize for getting this overview out so late and starting the reccs so late in the month—December has been very front-loaded for me, so hopefully the rest of the month will go smoother.

The Sandman is a graphic novel (a series of graphic novels?) by Neil Gaiman about Dream—Morpheus—one of the seven siblings known as "the Endless".

Why this must be read: If you've ever read any Harry Potter slash this story will make you cackle with gleeful delight, as these two emo pairings whinge at each other about their respective fangirls.

04:31 am Highway to Hell, by Kitty (PG-13)
Fandom: REAL GHOSTBUSTERS
Pairing: none (gen)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] excellency
Author Website: The Temple of Smarm
Why this must be read: It's only fitting to begin this month of recommendations with a story which I know is responsible for luring several people into "Real Ghostbusters" fandom. Kitty's "Highway to Hell" has been called "the gold standard of smarm" (as it should be, written by the person most known for not only popularizing the intense-buddy-bonding genre, but for providing the definitive explanation on what smarm really is). On their way home after a week-long road trip busting small-town entities, the four Ghostbusters stumble into a trap laid by Set, the Egyptian lord of darkness, which requires the sacrifice of one of their fellows to save the others. But of course, in this paranormal world, the sacrifice is not the end, but rather the start, of a journey that crosses worlds into the dream plane, and beyond.

In this intense and painful story, Kitty paints brilliant word pictures with her evocative use of language, and the transcendent bonds of the team's friendship always shine through.

07:07 am Secrets and Surprises by Kerguelan (NC-17)
Fandom: THE EQUALIZER
Pairing: Robert/Mickey
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

Balancing out the angst from the previous fic, this week’s is a more lighthearted fic with less contemplation and more… smut. Kerguelan has written Robert, Mickey, and Scott (who makes a brief appearance) perfectly to the point that I could hear their voices in my head as I read. We get a glimpse into Robert’s private life in this fic without the subject of the Company ever appearing. Also? The sex scene is hot.

Why this must be read: It should be impossible to write slash this grimly funny.

"Ryan is confused. He also hates his life. There's a coffee stain on his tie."

03:07 pm Love Will Come Through by thedeadparrot (PG-13)
Fandom: SUPERMAN
Pairing: Clark/Lois
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] parrotfic
Why this must be read: The triangle (quandrangle? polygon!) that ensues in Superman Returns with Lois Lane, engaged to Richard, while coping with the return of her former lover and all unawares of his secret identity could be fodder for cheesy excess. Instead, [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot treats all the characters respectfully, painting an emotionally realistic picture of the fallout. Best of all, this story meets the difficult challenge of showing Lois falling for the bumbling but true blue Clark Kent. Surprised? So was I, but pleasantly so as the story sets that pairing up in such a way that you can believe it, every step of the way.

Why this must be read:

This story is my first rec because you really don't need to know anything about "The Sandman" to love it and it avoids major spoilers for the spoiler-phobes out there. I think it's actually a must read for anyone who loves books, because you don't need to be familiar with anything but a love of books order to understand all the books we've lost, and how nothing—how no dreams—can truly replace them. This story haunts me, because I've always wished I could go back in time and save all the books that are gone, every single one.

Fandom: NEWSIES
Pairing: Kid Blink/Mush
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jack_the_girl
Author Website: misprint
Why this must be read:

This fic manages to convey a sense of the epic that is somehow also humble. It's a love story that's not about the kind of love we might expect, and in many ways it feels more like a character study of the most intimate kind.

Something about the way Blink’s hand curved around his stomach made him think of the carriage wheels, taut and tight and hopelessly lashed down, arced into themselves, spinning, spinning. He could feel the delicate fluctuations of his friend’s pulse through the thin skin of his palm. It made him think of insects again, helplessly flapping their wings, trapped, fluttering in the hollow of his wrists, in the knots in his neck.
