Fandom: TWIN PEAKS
Pairing: Dale Cooper/Albert Rosenfield
Author on LJ: unknown; e-mail link at bottom of story

Warning: “No actual bondage. Get over it.”
Why this must be read:

I’ve decided to begin our tour of Twin Peaks fanfic in the spoiler-free neighborhoods and gradually work toward more canon-heavy areas.

So, for my first rec (and in celebration of the recent reboot of the James Bond franchise with Casino Royale) I bring you this delicious pre-series story, in which Agents Cooper and Rosenfield attend a masquerade party as 007 and…well, you’ll see.

I particularly like this fic because (1) it provides an explanation for Albert’s amusement in episode 2.03 when he tells Cooper that the gun used in an attack was a Walther PPK, and (2) both characters’ voices are excellent, especially Albert’s:
“On behalf of the sovereign disenfranchised, on behalf of the racially marked and the politically suspect, on behalf of the queer, on behalf of the freakish, on behalf of all the angry geniuses and noncompliant Others — I am forced to concede that for a tool of the establishment you are very, very hot.”

So far, all the stories I've recced have starred concepts as the main characters, but the next couple of stories are all about objects...

Fandom: ANTHROPOMORFIC
Pairing: Spoon/Fork

Why this must be read: Short-short stories are such divine mouthfuls when done well, and this tender morsel manages to describe a whole relationship, complete with a twist ending, in just seventy-three words. Mmmmm.

Fandom: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
Pairing: Jack Twist/Ennis del Mar

Why this must be read: It’s very, very hard to strike the right balance of emotions when writing about Jack and Ennis. There’s a tendency for female writers especially, I think, to go overboard with it and try to make up for all the places in the canon where their emotions are not expressed.

This drabble, however, strikes that extremely fine balance in exactly one hundred words. It’s beautiful, poetic, and so achingly true.

03:13 pm Boys Missing Shoes by Chloe (PG-13)
Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS
Pairing: Winters/Nixon
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] illiterate
Author Website: Death of Decadence
Why this must be read: Winters/Nixon is hands down the favorite pairing in Band of Brothers fandom, which means it's reasonably easy to find good fic... but not always quite so easy to figure out new ways to write it. Chloe pulls it off admirably here. Her Nixon is just as funny and fractured as the man we see onscreen, and the backstory she suggests for him is beautifully ambiguous. Even more impressively, she gives us a Winters with a complex interior monologue underlying that stern façade--a Winters who is, when faced with his feelings for Nixon, still as young and frightened as the boys he leads.

Some people are more affectionate when they have been drinking; when Nixon has been drinking he wants to kiss you. Nixon always seems to be drinking. It works out then.

03:33 pm Not Fade Away by Chya (PG-13)
Fandom: MUTANT X
Characters: All
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chya
Author website: Chya's fanfic page
Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] chya is a wonderful writer and writes well-balanced stories. She writes mostly about Jesse and this story has enough angst to live of!

Not Fade Away is such a story, it's an AU from a Mutant X episode (Power Play) and it deals with... "What if"

You see, in the episode, Jesse gets a whiff of gas that destabilizes his molecular structure when he phases. What if Brennan couldn't help Jesse pull himself together?

This story tells us about the fear the rest of the Mutant X team has, and there are also brilliant pieces of other characters describing Jesse's situation.

Why this must be read:

The most unique fic in this fandom, in my humble opinion. If this show is a documentary, someone has to edit it, right? How do you turn all those hours and hours of everyday life into twenty minute chunks of a story? Amazingly well done and interesting, and along the way it turns into something bigger, this examination of stories and reality and how they intersect. Also maybe the best oc ever.

"You cut the three weeks of stilted misery after Michael’s awful attempt at conflict resolution. And when you splice it all back together, carefully layering interview clips over silent scenes it’s something else. It’s the prettiest sort of tragedy, it’s the blackest sort of comedy, it’s nothing like real life."
