Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS Pairing: Lipton/Luz Author on LJ: damsonAuthor Website: Damson's MotherboardWhy this must be read: This is one of the Band of Brothers fandom's perennial favorite stories, and also perhaps its most unique. It comprises a series of short vignettes that form one sequence as set out in the LJ post, but on Damson's web site you can see it in its original format, in which you choose the sequence for yourself. Hence, the resulting piece isn't so much a narrative as a cluster of moments at once interconnected and fragmented--which is a particularly apt way of writing the experience of combat, where normal rules of continuity and causality don't apply. And all my high-falutin' jargon aside, it's a satisfying portrait of two very different men--Luz the rowdy company clown and Lipton the hyper-conscientious NCO--and how they come together in the face of a war for which nothing could have prepared them. Lovely, quirky prose, too, with flashes of startling insight. you ached for it, a little part of you thought of your sweetheart back home, the feel of another live person, Muck and Penkala's foxhole was the deepest in the company, now also the deepest crater, you move closer because there are things you need, and there are things that still feel okay, in the last barrage their screams were recorded in tree rings, his lip is soft against your tongue, friends dead, ticked off on fingers at quiet moments, the image of your sweetheart fades, the pressure of a hand, against your crotch, pressing down, lingers. Fandom: ANTHROPOMORFIC Pairing: Author/Muse Author on LJ: edoraslassAuthor Website: Henneth Annun and FanFiction.netWhy this must be read: I don't really feel much need to sell this one, because, hey, if you're an author you're already clicking this baby, and if you're not, you're moseying on whatever clever thing I put in here, and really, that's just how it should be. stares balefully at museAuthor/Muse

Fandom: GETBACKERS Pairing: none Author on LJ: zanzaforhireAuthor's Website: none Why this must be read: I'm very fond of this one because it plays into the same set of arcane theories on Akabane's background that I have. But that's far from its only good point; it also has that subtle, flavorful feeling that gives the best fics their distinctive mood. Not much actually happens in this story. It doesn't have to. Every night, at precisely midnight, he would step through the door and quietly claim a corner booth in the back. The order, too, never varied — one small pot of tea, freshly brewed rather than bagged, no sugar, just milk. He would pour the milk into the cup before the tea then sit there sipping it slowly, drawing out the experience, hands cradled around the warmth of the cup. The only thing that ever kept him away was an assignment, and he seemed to savor the next night’s cup that much more for it.Man of Mystery

Fandom: BOY MEETS WORLD Pairing: gen Author on LJ: sarajayechanAuthor Website: Sara's ff.net profileWhy this must be read:The relationship of Jack and Shawn was always a complicated one. They were raised separately and had no common ground, and therefore never really understood each other. In Sara's hands, there is no wrong or right, only two strangers that are related. It's a great look into their heads. Brothers

Fandom: BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN Pairing: Jack Twist/Ennis del Mar Author on LJ: planetgal471Author Website: "Writings" tagWhy this must be read: This piece delves into one of the greatest unsung characters: Mrs. Twist, Jack’s mother. It’s canon, and explores Jack’s relationship with his parents, especially with his mother, and how attuned she was to what was going on even when he couldn’t say it. It’s beautiful, sad, aching, and not for the light of angst-heart, but so worth it. The Good Lord Will Provide

Fandom: THE OFFICE Pairing: Pam/Roy, Pam/Jim Author on LJ: sophia_helixAuthor Website: into the heart...Why this must be read:If there's a definitive Pam fic in the fandom, this is probably it. Pam's whole life history, tangible and real, and Sophia has such a knack for getting inside her head, illuminating the three-dimensional details of her life, with Roy, with Jim, with herself. The sheer scope of it is kind of breathtaking, and definitely memorable. And the way it builds and builds puts everything that happened in "Casino Night" in a whole new perspective -- which is an impressive feat in this fandom. "He’s been in love with her all along. She hasn’t quite gotten that until now. He liked her when she first started, and he’s kept being her friend because he had a crush on her, and whatever he told Michael, it must have been about how he feels now. In love with her. He’s been waiting, hoping for something to happen, for her to notice him. That makes her feel good and angry at last, with him for being so hopeful and so passive, with herself for being so blind."And Harder Still to Make Noise

Fandom: TWIN PEAKS Pairing: gen (or pre-Truman/Bryson) Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown Warnings: Spoilers for TP s2 Why this must be read:This story, the only gen fic featuring winsome DEA Agent Denise/Dennis Bryson that I know of, originally appeared in the December 1994 issue of Power Star: The Imagination Anthology, a print and BBS fanzine. It’s a couple of missing scenes from episode 2.13, in which Sheriff Truman and Bryson hatch a plan to rescue Agent Cooper from a hostage situation. Television viewers only saw the execution, but its creation probably went something like this... "Now, what exactly did you have in mind?"
"Come over here and lift your skirt."
Denise put a hand on his hip. "I don't know what you've heard about me, Sheriff, but I'm not that kind of girl." Uniformity (Note: scroll down or do a Ctrl-F search for the title to read the story.)
