Fandom: TWIN PEAKS
Pairing: Cooper/Audrey
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] treewishes
Author Website: unknown
Warnings: spoilers for early season two
Why this must be read:

Anyone who writes Cooper/Audrey has to deal with the fact that he gently but firmly turns her down in season one. The most popular option is to go AU and have him say “yes” instead. Some authors, however, tackle the challenge of pairing them after that conversation, which means coming up with a plausible motive for them to disregard the Cooper’s objections. Treewishes manages it by setting her story early in season two, at a moment when both of them are shaken—Audrey by unwanted knowledge, Cooper by the echoes of past tragedies.

I especially like the subtle use of fire and ice imagery: Cooper “checking [his room] with cold proficiency for any signs of intrusion,” Audrey having “nothing but ice in her eyes” one moment. And then, inevitably...
And he let go, let his body find the hottest places in hers, and let the storm in his heart rage, holding her against him. He could hear her gasp as they came together, and her cries as it overwhelmed them both. The fire pulsed through him, into her, burning them both.

But fire is not something you can play with safely in Twin Peaks.

Warnings: spoilers for season two, including the finale
Why this must be read:

Like my last rec, this story is set post-Talk; in fact it’s post-series, and addresses some of the loose ends left dangling by the show’s cancellation. Multiple points of view come into play, and although the shifts in perspective are a little wonky every voice rings true. Take Audrey’s reaction to Cooper, “the white hum that engulfed her when she saw his smile,” or Cooper’s equally dazzled perception of her:
Audrey was too bright, too blinding...He could feel her intensity, her burning, could practically feel her going supernova under his palms, palms that sweated when she was near and itched when she was away. She was, she was going to be...amazing. He wondered what she would be like at twenty, at thirty. He wanted to be there to see it.

In the end there is comfort, and joy, and the knowledge that “Their hearts would beat for the rest of their lives.”

Fandom: REAL GHOSTBUSTERS
Pairing: Peter/Ray/Winston/Egon

Why this must be read:
So you're probably thinking by now, "Gee, RGB Robbie sure hasn't recommended enough smut in Real Ghostbusters fandom." And no, I haven't. Not that there isn't RGB smut out there, but compared to some other fandoms, there's not nearly as much as you'd think. (I'd chalk it up to the source material being animated/for kids, but considering the amount and variety of anime PWPs out there... um, no.)

So... let's fix that with my next rec. And what can I say about it other than this is probably the PWP-iest PWP in all of RGB fandom, and practically guaranteed to get you hot AND make you laugh at the same time.

03:10 pm Spengs in Toyland by "E" (NC-17)
Fandom: REAL GHOSTBUSTERS
Pairing: Egon/Janine
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

Because Egon and Janine are PRACTICALLY CANON *g*, and their bedroom play isn't nearly as staid as one might think of a reserved physicist like Egon. This is quite a nice bit of het smut, simultaneously romance-novel and raunchy, as Janine discovers a BETTER use for a "stimulator" Egon's bought to spice up their sex life.

04:34 pm the boy who gave away his birthday by Mary Borsellino (PG)
Fandom: SANDMAN
Pairing: Dream/OMC
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] monkeycrackmary
Author Website: Ink Stigmata
Why this fic must be read:

This is, quite possibly, my favorite Sandman fic. On one level it's simply a "what next?" post-series story; on another, it's a facinating look at how Dream has changed and how the rest of the Endless have changed with him. (Like Despair! I love her part in this fic.) Everything in this story weaves into canon so seemlessly that I sometimes forget it never actually appeared in comic form. And for those who shy away from fic with original characters, please, don't shy away from this one--if Chris Walker had appeared in the actual series he may well have been one of my favorite characters. He's boyish and smart, and all around a delightful character to meet. This whole story is, quite simply, great.

Why this must be read:

Wow, we feature some pretty heavy themes here in RGB-land, don't we? So maybe it's time to lighten things up a bit, take a little break from all the angst and pain and tears.

Or, if not quite a BREAK... a satire.

08:23 pm How to Write an RGB Fanfic Story - A Primer by Johanna Swift (PG)
Fandom: REAL GHOSTBUSTERS
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Real Ghostbusters Fanfic Library
Why this must be read:
P. Morrigan, writing under the pseudonym Johanna Swift (yes, it's meant to call Jonathan Swift to mind), takes a few smart pokes-and-jabs at some of the more common tropes in RGB fandom, and it's nothing short of a hoot.

"You want to write a RGB story about your favorite busters, or perhaps about your favorite buster, but you’re not sure how to get started. This RGB primer provides a comprehensive understanding of the major characters as well as a guide to the most popular plots in RGB fandom. Simply select a plot and use the characterization guide to assist you in your character descriptions and dialogue. It’s that simple."

08:44 pm Play Us a Song, Dead Piano Guy by Breuer/Schreiber/Spurlock/Tanderich (PG)
Fandom: REAL GHOSTBUSTERS
Pairing: none (gen)
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: P.K.E. Readings Online
Why this must be read:

Judy Breuer, Sandy Schreiber, Pam Spurlock and B.J. Tandarich are among the "founding mothers" of Real Ghostbusters fandom, all of them integral parts of the team that produced the first zine devoted to RGB, "P.K.E. Readings". This story, featured in the first issue, finds the Ghostbusters at a parapsychologists' convention in Lansing, Michigan (not coincidentally, home of the venerable fan convention, MediaWest) dealing both with the personalities one finds at any genre convention, as well as an unexpected and malevolent manifestion. This story is in turn extremely funny, and extremely creepy. Plus it offers a wonderful taste of what RGB fanfiction was like back in its nascent days.... and it still works today (as do the majority of the other marvelous vintage fic linked from the main page - check 'em out!).

Enjoy... but watch out for possessed piano-playing mannequins!

09:59 pm Fine is a Four-Letter Word, by Rana Eros (PG)
Title: GETBACKERS
Pairing: none
Author: Rana Eros
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ranalore
Author's Website: none
Why this fic must be read:

Because it's funny and sweet and gently revealing. Rana's own summary says it best: "Ban gets by with a lot of help from his friends." He's at his cranky, prickly best in this story, where he deals with the aftermath of a battle wound and Ginji, of course, bullies him into taking better care of himself.

One of the things that attracts a lot of readers to GetBackers is the depth of the bond between its main characters, and that shines through wonderfully here. They have a dynamic all their own. As much as, like any two teenage boys, they endlessly give each other a hard time, at the end of the day they're the center of each other's worlds, and know it even if they'd never admit it to themselves.

"Come on, Ban-chan." And Ginji gets out of the booth, taking Ban's sandwich with him. Ban opens his mouth to protest --loudly-- but Ginji's set his jaw and the look in his eyes is somewhere between pleading and commanding. Ban slaps his hand on the table in frustration, gets more pissed at the flash of pain.

"Fine." It's not in him to surrender gracefully, but he surrenders, stalking up the stairs with Ginji close enough on his heels to--

To catch him if he falls. And it's probably a point in Ginji's favor that it feels like too much effort to turn around and smack him for it.

11:20 pm Your Coworker Could Be a Space Alien, by Serin (author says R, I’d say PG-13)
Fandom: TWIN PEAKS
Pairing: Cooper/Rosenfield
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

I have a weakness for stories whose author’s notes include phrases like “flu-induced silliness,” and this one is too cute for words. It’s got wacky tabloid articles, motel-room domesticity, and dialogue like:
"So once again, what begins as an empirical investigation moves into the realm of ontology."

"I'm just proud we made it through that without any reference to anal probes."
